My grandfather was in the 8th Air Force. He was a pilot and he flew this glorious aircraft and took part in over 10 missions over the western front. It puts a tear to my eye when hearing those thunderous props fire up. Reminds me of my grandpa so much. These B-17’s really have spirit. These baby’s scream life. They are truly living things in my eyes!

Good Lord... I'm watching "Masters of the Air" [released today] and I came here to check the B-17 engine sound because I knew it was wrong, too soft and blend in the movie. In this video right here, the engine sound, with squeaks and knocks and thunder, warms my heart. It is so good (I used to travel in DC3s and Electras in my youth). Why these producers don't do some research before spoiling the movie? Damn.

The sound in this vid is pure heaven. The sound of the starter and the mesh was caught very well on the start of Engine 2. I could replay that over and over again. And I had my earphones on and full volume as the other engines were fired up. Could feel the vibrations in my head. Made me feel like I was there. There is no sweeter sound than a B-17 starting up. Awesome vid!

Ironic this plane was a war survivor, became the literal Frankenstein Fortress, went to a museum, said museum is destroyed by a tornado,as is the plane, restored to flight to flight again, crashed and burned out in 2011 and AGAIN is being rebuilt following said fire to possibly flightworthy condition again. What an incredible aeroplane! If only NineONine can be restored from its leftovers following that bad crash....

A2A simulations has the B 17 package for flightsim x, you can own and fly your own B 17. Maintenance hanger, parts wear out, depending on maint, and how you run it etc. Mine has 3 hours smoh, flying goid. The planes are used when get them, usually needing random work getting em going.

Any expert on radial engines, the initial beech is enought to remove oil from inferior piston? Im not familiar with them. I only had seen biplanes and things like that manual rotating for that but i heard that is necessary to manually open a purge to leak oil. Is that really necesary?

Like everyone else, I love those sounds. I even went to aeronautical school for radial engines (A&P Mechanics at Spartan in Tulsa as it was one of 3 that offered radial mechanics) I did not finish, so want to ask others, why not start #3 first, to start the hydraulics, which I have heard was the first engine to start. Maybe it does not matter, but I have seen many start #3 first and that is consistent with what I know. Just curious. p.s. when I get in a bummed mood, listening to these radials start, makes me happy, so in no way am I putting down, just curious.

they are similar..but different..nothing will ever come close to the ground shaking sound of a 10,000 HP top fueller as it leaves the line..but nothing will ever compare to the deep throaty roar as one of these massive radials fires and comes to life. like the mighty Merlin that powered not only the Spitfires and Mustangs and the Lancasters and Mosquito's it is the sound of victory that along with the Hero's that flew them helped win WWII

GTA V Decoders The smoke is from oil burning off in the cylinders. Not a single airplane has a cat because it chokes up and robs power, you need ever ounce you can get. With the government removing 110 and 130 octane low lead av gas due to elad content (even though its minimal) these engines run terrible (in comparison) already. No need to make it worse. If you want rediculous rules... Move to California.

An engineering marvel built without computer technology. History & technology are awesome partners. It was that same war that the B-17 was developed that birthed the first computor; & both were intended to kill people and save lives in the name of freedom. There willl be a terminator(s) as in the sci-fi movie, & it will serve the same purpose.
