Nikon P900 Lens Support Ring

I know I’m a few years behind but I have a P900 on its way… And all the components for a support ring! Thanks for the video. The DSLR I shoot with is a 14 yr old model and it’s rare I have a current model of anything, but I live within my budget. Thank God information lives on the internet forever. Lol

I bought this ring attachment because of this video and its amazing 10/10. My primary rig is the p900 w/ the ring mount (now) that connects to a ball joint attachment on my monopod giving an impressively noticeable difference in stability. Without the ball joint the camera is stationary on the monopod which is only good for things directly in front of the height of the pole. The ball joint gives the ability to shoot high, low or tracking subject. The combination with the increased stability of the ring Mount with a tripod, monopod or otherwise it’s a must have for the P900.

I use a rotating tripod collar with mine also, but the problem I have is with the lens drifting downward when zoomed out. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm shooting vertically or horizontally, the lens always wants to drift downwards. Brand new locking ballhead with a Kirk Enterprises quick release and plate. The Kirk plates for other camera models have a lip at the rear so that there is no drift, but they don't make a plate specifically for the P900.

This is a neccesity as the base mount for the tripod is far too small and weak. The example shown in the above video where the mount rips off shows exactly what happened to me. Hope you don't have the same repair problems as I did as Nikon's customer support is the worst I've ever experienced, really poor, so I'd recommend the support ring. Thank you, Dale. Strange how the P1000 has changed it's design. Could it be they now recognise the problem that a lot of people have had with the P900? More than likely

I have experienced the damage as well on my p900. Sent it in for a warranty claim as it was only 7 months old and Nikon tried to deny. I complained as I have had many camera's and never had this happen before. They wanted $285 to fix it but after my complaint, they said they would repair it under "good will" I agree it is a design flaw. I will be getting myself one of these ordered up today.

There’s still a ‘sagging’ problem with the P1000, though. When zoomed in, there’s a lot of annoying adjustments that need to be made.

You cant imagine how long ago I watched this video. I bought all kind of accessory for my P900, and I regret buying everything, just as much as I regret that I NEVER bought the ring for my tripod.. I am very gentle to my camera and I didnt break anything, but the camera with the original mount on the bottom get so many vibrations and the lens is so heavy that the center point moved away when I zoom in. Ring like that is the last accessory anyone would think of buying, but this is the first thing you should buy.. Everything else is irrelevant. This is the only thing you need for p900 if you already have a tripod for it.

I think it's a very good idea in theory. I'm not entirely sure if Nikon can move the tripod mount as you suggested. Won't the inner workings of the camera be in the way? I apologise, I'm not at all technically minded so I don't know.

@@DaleMrDSimmons I recently bought a P900 yet to receive it but checking reviews. I discovered your Vids & am happy with my choice. Currently I'm using a Canon SX530. Nice camera but maybe inferior to the Nikon.

Mark Stevens The Canon is not inferior but is marketed for the standard vacationers and for casual use. The optics are in this case are purposely manufactured with a lesser grade glass to keep this unit in a lesser price point. I have the Canon SX 530 and the SX60 along with the P900 and P1000. In each you can tell the difference and it’s all about price point. Any manufacturer cannot put $1000 glass in a $300 camera. Hope that makes sense.

Mark Stevens filters will not work with the p900. For haze reduction in postproduction use the highlight adjustment and clarity in Lightroom

Does the ring make much difference in stability when fully zoomed? Ie will the subject (stars/planets) be more stable? Or is it mainly the tripod?

Lexusant the ring is mainly used to evenly distribute the weight of the camera either zoomed or not. You mount the ring base to the tripod and it stabilizes the camera more evenly and reduces the strain on the 1/4 20 on the camera body.

I use a support ring from CANON. Here is the detail: Metal Tripod Collar Mount Ring for Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens This ring have a 78mm inner diameter which fits nicely without any modification. Don't make the mistaken ordering the support ring for the 70-200mm F4 lens. This one is way too small.

exact thing happened to my p900 but the whole socket snapped out, causing the camera to fall onto the hard floor broke the zoom on the lens. luckily it was insured.

But the problem with doing this causes the camera to now flex by now having the ring support all the weight and I dont like the horrible flex and very unstable and now harder to get focus and just wind will blow the camera out of focus using this. Its worse!!!! But I found the best way using both the ring mount along with a extra piece of metal also going to the stock mount on the camera, now it's very stable at any angle and no flex no issues at all wish I could post pics to show u how I did my homade mount but what I made has been the best thing ever for this camera by far!!!

paul kendall I have used this lens support ring for two years now and experienced no issues. I’m thinking if you are having focus issues it may be that the support ring attach screw is way to tight. If overtightened it can hinder the lens operation. But I’m glad you were able to get your camera supported to eliminate the 1/4x20 mount problem. Thanks for watching.

UPDATE ON MY SITUATION WITH NIKON SUPPORT: They are now ignoring my emails and not replying to my questions. If you can find an alternative way to have repairs done on Nikon goods I suggest you go there as nothing can be worse than the service I'm getting. I wish I knew then what I know now so in the future if I have any problems I will steer well clear of Nikon repair service

synthguy I’m sorry you’re having this difficulty. Many of the major manufacturers of cameras customer service fail to help post sale customers, or their costs are ridiculous. It infuriates me. Even little situations become difficult. A very good solution I found was Square Trade insurance. After the manufacturers warranty runs out they really shine. However, you are at the mercy of the manufacturers, even with Square Trade, until that runs out.
