Many thanks, Dale. You have such an affable, cheerful. warm character and a wonderful presentation style. I've been happily using the P900 since 2017 as I was mainly using it for stills. Now I want to start doing videography. so the P1000 seems more versatile as it shoots in 4K but crucially also has an auxiliary microphone input. It also has the benefit of a hot-shoe mount for flash or other attachments. I didn't like the idea of the offset Whitworth screw mount on my P900 but it hasn't proven to be an issue as I use it with Manfrotto QR plates. It's a pity the IR remote for the Nikon P900 can't be used with the P1000, and it now requires a separate transmitter and receiver attachment: that is a retrograde step. The battery system has changed too: the P900 uses EN-EL23 that is good for 360 stills, whereas the P1000 uses EN-EL20a which is only good for 250 shots. Both batteries offer around 1 hour 20 minutes video recording in the respective cameras. It is though disappointing that each video session is limited to 30 minutes on the P1000. Maybe Nikon will rectify this on the successor, as the P1000 has been around for almost three years now. Maybe they should also look at a decently sized image sensor instead of the 1/2.3"

A very comprehensive review, better then any others, thank you sir. I'm just checking out the P900 and P1000 for a friend who has disabilities and was thinking of either one of these as his next camera. 🙂
@johnmichaelrichards3 жыл бұрын
I have disabilities, which made it increasingly difficult for me to use and carry around my Pentax K200D and lenses, etc. I bought the P900 second-hand from a friend in 2017. Since having it, I've never used my Pentax. The P900 is lighter than the Pentax and its size sits well in the hand but just be warned, it's bulkier and heavier than most bridge cameras. The P1000 is bigger and heavier still.
@MrBooojangles3 жыл бұрын
@@johnmichaelrichards thanks. My friend eventually did choose the P900 and seems very happy with it. When I want a new bridge camera, I'm going to stick with another Panasonic one, as they are pretty good too and the ones I have my eye on have CMOS sensors now, plus good 4K video and frame capture and much more optical zoom then my 600mm on my Panasonic DMC-FZ45. I got a DSLR too, but I will always keep a bridge camera for its extra focal length and speed of getting it out and zoomed out when you're in a rush to capture something moving.
@L.V-Rider4 жыл бұрын
I have the P900 for something like 4 years now. I shot just more than 33,000 pictures with so far and no, zero problems. Mostly birding and other wildlife photos. I still love it with it's shortcomings and all. If the P1000 "Birdwatching" setting is at all like that of the P900, I will ignore it completely. I might do centre light sampling but not centre focusing, and for small birds sitting in-between branches on the other side of a tree or other obstacle, it struggle to focus on that small bird. I mainly use "P" - Programmed Auto where you pre-program the settings where you would if you used manual and that works for me. That is what "Birdwatching" setting is, but with my own priorities. Try it, is works. In difficult situations where "P" does not work well, I would change to some manual or other setting according to the situation.

If you kayak, you own a P1000, and you haven't tried to measure the point of curvature of earth/boats go over horizon, with blind eye vs bringing them back multiple times with the cameras? You are either a flat earther, or a gatekeeper...Or MISSING OUT on the reality of what you can PROVE for yourself. Mr. D knows this, and he uses military measures, like an angle finder to measure distance and that cannot work with R value, it has to be 90degree angle. This is actually very decent review of the cameras. But the main purpose of these are the max zoom, and they both seem to do a good job. If you use this for multi use...He is absolutely right, the P1000 would be worth the difference. If just using it for the zoom, and seeing atmospheric conditions far out, and doing some moon shooting, just get the P900

I'm surprised by the comment about lack filter rings. I've had m P900 Coolpix for several years (brought in the UK) and have used filters regularly. I can also use a lens hood when necessary, all using the 67mm ring. My main gripes about a lock of a hot shoe for off-camera flash.

The only issue for me is it seems the P900 doesnt reproduce reds very well. When taking stills I could have what appears to be a full red or orange setting and to get close to the color I have to shoot about - 3/4 exposure compensation and even then I'll have yellow in the sun. Just kind of frustrating for me. Obviously it doesn't perform well in low light but I accept that and use it for its strengths. Thanks again for the reply.

This video could have really benefitted from upsampling to 4K before uploading. You don't even have to cut in 4K, just exporting / upsampling to 4K before you upload it to KZbin will give greatly better video quality. Because KZbin reencodes everything and give the 4K videos a lot more bitrate than the 1080p. Really shame this is 1080p only, it's basically impossible to compare the photos after the KZbin compression.

Let me give you a hot tip: If you dont mind looking at moon craters or the few planets it can see... Get the P950, more compact than the P1000, same features but "just" 2000mm instead of 3000mm Or if you dont even really need the 2000mm (trust me, 99,9% of the people DONT need it) get a Sony RX10 Mk4, there is really a huge difference in image quality, especially in low light and dynamic range.

@@DaleMrDSimmons , didn't know there are a p950. I have seen used p900 for $250 so that kind of reels me in to weighting in on the decision. But i'll certainly keep on looking and especially for that p950. That P1000 when you were holding it seemed pretty big. Just like any good DSLR. Thanks and keep on shooting..
How about the video? P900 was limited to shoot only 15 minutes of video. That pissed me off when I realised that I am missing most of the video because the camera just turned off. That's just stupid to limit a camera this way. Makes no sense to me. Also I like the new features of P1000 but the price?!?!?! Damn! I could get an 8k 360 camera that shoot far better films and stills, only without the zoom. Something tells me tha the price is way to high for a camera that shoot only 16mp, just because of the lens and the zoom.

What Tripod did you use for the P900? noticed it was not attached to the base of the body? The tripod Mount in my p900 has snapped off.

Now the Japanese came out with the P950 now. Have the P900 and was able to update the Firmware a few weeks back.

Hi Mr D, Thank your for your great video. I already own a P900 and was considering upgrading. There is something entrancing about a new camera! but watching your very detailed and practical video made me think that, at least in the first instance, I will work on improving my range of skills, technique and speed with the P900. I wonder if you might be able to give me any pointers on a particular area or skill that I struggle with. I mainly do bird photography. Often I can see the bird without the camera, then I can see it in wide screen but when I go to zoom in, I kind of lose it, and have to zoom out again to find it, of course this takes a lot of time and the bird may have gone. I usually use the viewfinder, but am going to experiment with the screen. Im worried that if I got a camera with a longer lens, this may be more of a problem. Any suggestions or comments?

jenny Hartman That is a standard problem using a big lens. Use the snap zoom switch on the side of the lens. That is what I do when i loose a subject and it works well. Be it understood, the P900 performs horrible for any in flight shots.

Lots of practice helps.

In case anyone is still having this issue, the snap zoom button is definitely useful for this. Practice is also useful. What I usually do is start out at 1/2 or 1/4 of the way zoomed in, so that what my left (naked eye) sees is similar to what the right eye sees. This makes it very easy to interpret where the subject is in the image in the viewfinder. Maybe this is just practice, having used high-powered zoom compact cameras for almost 20 years, but I often (about half the time) find that I can be fully zoomed in and find a bird, so long as *both* my eyes are open. I'm not sure how this helps, I guess my brain is doing something subconsciously that helps me locate it. (It might help to try using a monocular for practice, as then you're practicing the skill without being limited by the camera's viewfinder resolution.) If the bird is moving a lot though, I can't keep up, and generally lean on the snap zoom function a lot. However, for the P900 (and most of the older super-zooms I've tried), poor focusing on birds in flight is a huge problem. I probably don't need to say it, but evidently, you're not going to find the bird if the picture is so blurry that the bird is gone. Unfortunately, if the sky is clear, its not always obvious if the focus is correct or not. I find the solution is almost always to zoom out, refocus, zoom in, focus, shoot. And yes, this almost always results in the bird getting away! (Though useful if something is circling.) My go-to method for birds in flight is actually to zoom out slightly. Much easier even at 75% zoom, because the autofocus is much worse at full zoom. But as Mr. D, says, the camera certainly isn't optimal for flying birds. (Being unable to resist the urge to go to 100% zoom is my number one demon right now.) One big reason I'm looking to get a P1000 is the manual focus ring, so I can leverage big zoom without losing the majority of my pictures to the somewhat disappointing full-zoom autofocus.

selling my nikon d3300 to buy nikon p900. is it a good idea?
@ryanclawson73074 жыл бұрын
I'd get the p1000. I tried both at best buy, and the p1000 felt better in just about every way, except perhaps image stabilization. The viewfinder is like 5x better than the one in the p900, and it feels more premium. The p1000 is only $740 new on ebay rn. Either's good though I'm sure, cheers

The Nikon P1000 is still junk. I spend 7 hours out in the countryside trying to get a brand new P1000 to work. Photography is ISO, Aperture, and Shutter speed. The software on the Nikon P1000 is absolute trash. If Nikon or 6th Ave Camera Shop does not resolve this tomorrow, I am sending it back to the 6th Ave camera shop. I am beyond disappointed in this camera.

Simply stated, a bridge camera is not for you. I agree the Nikon software is horrible, that’s why I don’t use it. So I would return it and purchase a DSLR and lenses to meet your needs. Thanks for watching.

Nice comparison Mr Simmons my question is since both cameras having very tiny sensors same as as mobiles does it worth buying any since you cant enlarge the image due to poor sensor?
@DaleMrDSimmons3 жыл бұрын
Enlarging a photo from any bridge camera is a short lived project as the sensors are too small.

Old P900 is standard HD at 1080P and the New P1000 is 4x the resolution at 4K UHD
@DaleMrDSimmons4 жыл бұрын
If you want 4K video and that extra 1000mm then yes. If not if you have the 90 keep it.
