Excellent! It's great to see an article the dispels the myth connecting the Dalhousie-Lebreton dispute to the Rideau Canal. I would offer one small correction: While it is quite true that Dalhousie encouraged Firth and Berrie to resist Lebreton's efforts to evict them as squatters, they were not sent by Dalhousie. Their tavern was established there in 1819, before the December 1820 purchase that started the feud. The Oct. 1852 petition by William L. Mackenzie to the Legislative Assembly of Canada on behalf of the Estate of Robert Randall contained, as exhibit 35, a Jan. 8, 1820 letter from Andrew Berrie to Randall, stating he had built a tavern on the property the previous year, and seeking to establish some sort of agreement with Randall. (He said he had had no reply to his first letter Oct. 27, 1819.)
