An inter-caste wedding between a Dalit AIADMK MLA and a Brahmin girl, reportedly the daughter of a priest, has created a storm in Tamil Nadu. The father of the bride who did not agree to the wedding tried to barge into their residence and attempt suicide. MLA Prabhu then released a video message with wife Soundarya to defend himself.

God (Brahman) says that a partner that will agree to uphold dharma and the 7 phere vows is what matters. A Hindu should only be upholding shruti texts (The Vedas) nor smriti texts (cultural). If someone wants to marry in their own community of their own free will because that's their preference that's fine, but Hinduism doesn't allow for this discrimination and pressuring that the culture seems so keen on for centuries. If the groom and bride vow to uphold dharma and are both Hindus that's all that matters to Brahman. He doesn't allow us to discriminate amongst his creations though. That goes for animals and humans alike.

If her father was truly a Hindu let alone a Brahmin in the true sense and not by name, he'd know that caste/varna/jati is no where in The Vedas. The Vedas is the *only* shruti (religious text) a Hindu is to follow as it is said to be the word of God. Caste/varna/jati are only found mentioned in smriti (cultural) texts like Manusmriti, Mahabharata, and yes even Gita which is not considered the word of God but the author's account of the dialogue that happened which is moral and ethical in nature and not religious doctrine. All these texts are thousands of years younger than The Vedas and are social commentary on what was being seen in society and the authors thoughts on what and how things should be done. God (Brahman)nor any of its first creation (devi/devta) ever said caste/varna/jati was ok. We as a society created these professions from what was supposed to be qualities that anyone could have. Then we made hierarchy difference. Even smriti texts are clear that they are the opinion of the author and are no longer valid after the yug they were created and should not be followed if they contradict The Vedas, as that is eternal and holds authority over any other text. If her father was a true Brahmin he would have just cared that the boy was Hindu and that he was agreeing to the 7 phere vows. Unfortunately, he did not pay attention or study well enough and held other ideas and beliefs over The Vedas which is not correct. At least his daughter seems to know what matters. Congrats to the couple. May you both hold true to the path of dharma. 🙏

Why can't we allow SC/ST community members to be chief priests of Srirangam, Madurai or Chidambaram temples and Mathadhipathis of various Saivite, Smartha and Vaishnava mathams? Why is Kanchi Acharya and all Vaishnava Simhasanadhipatis are always Brahmins? Why can't we allow Dalits to be the chief priests? The original priest of Thanjavur Peruvudaiyar Temple was Rajaraja Perumparaiyar, a person from the Paraiyar (Dalit) community. He was appointed by Rajaraja Chozhan himself. Brahminism has penetrated all these ways. We must return the Shiva and Murugan temples at the hands of Dalit priests. They were all pre-Brahminic temples of native Tamil culture. We need to throw out Brahmin and Velalar priests from TN Shiva temples and bring Dalit priests back inside.
