You may know about India’s caste system which is an ancient social hierarchy that dates back 3,000 years. Caste-based discrimination was outlawed in 1950 but it still exists in many aspects of Indian society. For example, even though inter-caste marriages were legalized in 1954, only a small percentage of marriages in India are actually inter-caste. Why is that the case and how do Indians feel about inter-caste marriages today? Our Asian Boss reporter hit the streets of Delhi to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indian population.

In my experience as an Indian, as long as the guy or girl has good career and money, they will not oppose strongly. But if the future seems bad, they will oppose. In my family I have seen dozens of intercaste marriages. And I have seen people oppose guy from same my caste because he has drinking problem or has bad reputation. Obviously people have married irrespective of parents choice too. I have seen failed intercaste marriages because of very different cultural habits. My aunt married in very regressive business family, and she couldn’t even ask for help when beaten. Her entire family manipulated us. And we could save her. But since then for me the criteria is progressive mindset over any other criteria

The problem is these people have no guts to change the minds of parents. You have to condition them, have actual conversations. Talk logic. I have seen my parents changing their viewpoints about lgbt, about sex education, because I do talk to them about larger implications. If people just want open minded parents as a gift, that’s not going to happen. We also have to nurture their minds.

That's a big generalisation. You assuming we all are somehow ignorant ironically ur statement is itself ignorant. We have 29 states not Everystate is same nor everyone follows the caste system. @Hellspawn_kun
@Hellspawn_kun Жыл бұрын
@dhiman kalita I referred to we because I am presenting my thoughts as a first person talking about them, meaning our society, which I am a part of. Common sense that it ain't ironic. If one of your classmates is a murderer and all other classmates say that murder is a crime, is that ironic?? Just consider some continuity in your analysis rather than discrete way and talk about human psychology. Every human born is born with a tendency of ignorance. The environment in which he or she grows up decides in which way the person is gonna portray his or her ignorance. Countries like India ignorance is "majorly" shown through stuff like corruption, caste system, etc. Countries like pakistan ignorance are shown through terrorism, extreme and blind religious mindset, etc. There is no country that lacks certain aspects. Obviously, you might counter me with a valid argument that the level of ignorance isn't the same from place to place just kike yours and other parts of country. That's exactly where proper education is necessary. And that's also a major thing which in itself our country is having an issue with. I am not even trying to justify that ignorance. I myself am more of a liberal type of guy. I am just talking about the mindset and tendency of humans in society.

Well none of the Indian is ignorant about it! We simply want to keep it, that is why?? Because it gives us our identity and all the added benefits. Otherwise ask Rajput to give up their caste....will they?? Ask, Brahmins to give up....never. You see the phraseology of superior, purest of pure etc. So, caste system will never diffuse from India, rather has deeply intertwined with our political lives.

The bearded spec guy explained it --- it's because India has a joint family system and once a fam member marries outside his or her caste, this whole family loses face in the entire society (not just in the same city but all over the country) - they are refused from attending various functions (birth ceremony, naming ceremony, funeral etc) in the community, they are denied privileges, they are removed from the yearbook - sorta!! Also, these people talk liberally about inter-caste marriage but in reality even when this occurs - it occurs when they marry an immediate adjacent (lower or higher) caste ONLY. It is never more than that. For example a baniya might marry a kshatriya but will never be permitted to marry a brahmin. Importantly, it is the Brahmin priest that presides all Hindu marriages -- and these scoundrels refuse to sing their occultic chants the right way or attempt to do the ritual wrongly ( without anyone knowing) in order to make the marriage fail - per the brahmin belief. This is the secret Brahmin code. Foreign people, even Myanmarese and Thai (for example) are totally unaware and clueless about this mega gravitational force that propagates in total secrecy in India- forget about Europeans and Americans!! India may need to be renamed as Varna (skin color/complexion) -- because it is called Varna System or Skin-Color System or Complexion System (saying Caste-system is a distraction) ( Textbook definition of racism)

I was born in a Jat family in an Uttarakhand village (yeah we are the one with most honor killing cases). Grew up with high overdose of caste stupidity. When my son was born in 2011, we talked about it and gave him a generic Surname which was different from ours, just to make sure that he is not identified by his caste. Never spoke about Caste (or anything that divides people) at home and he never asked. Had discussions with him about equality and how religion, caste, states, North India Vs South India could be divisive - how honesty, kindness are more important. He is turning out to be a fine young man. And on the original Q of inter caste marriage, we hope that one day, our son will introduce his 'someone special' to us and we will welcome her n love her with all our heart.

When she asked about asking people's caste, someone should have explained that finding people's cast is very easy without asking for it. Our surnames give it away, especially if those people are from the same region as you. Also, cinema and shows don't do a good job. Even when the caste is not a matter of concern, the lead role will have a Brahmin or Kshtriya surname. If the lead role is a Police officer then they most often than not have a Kshatriya (Rajput) surname. Even in Akshay Kumar's movie Padman which was based on a real guy, his name was caste-neutral but they ended up giving him upper caste name. Whenever I consciously try to find caste diversity in names of lead characters in Indian movies and shows, I am left disappointed. A few time it is not mentioned, and in cases they are mentioned, it is always a prominent upper caste name.

Low percentage of inter-caste marriages is faithfully reflected in the custom of arranged marriages, which has the same prevalence of about 95% of all marriages in India. As match-making is about matching socioeconomic variables of both parties, matching the caste factor first automatically matches up many other variables that generally result from caste-based exposures, experiences and resources. Since marriage by match-making is a convenient "short cut" (meanwhile one might date people of any caste), the rural society will need to encounter newer pressures before inter-caste marriages could become more common.

In rural areas castes live segregated, so for them it’s about resources, literal water resources. So they will favour if resources add up. Like if land rich families marry and share water wisely. Or political families colluding. No one talks of how celebs marry businessmen. But when local rural people do that, it’s OH NO moment . I think it’s logical for many people. My only concern is if your son daughter don’t want that privilege and want to marry for love, don’t kill them or exclude them, just respect their decision. I'm mixed race (Japanese and Pacific Islander), and I grew up in the island of Yap. Yap has a social caste system similar to India's that has existed for centuries. In our system, there are essentially six castes - each being divided into a variety of subclasses. In order of precedence, the chiefly caste, the noble caste, the commoners, and the three serf castes. Inter-caste marriages among the chiefly, noble and common castes are pretty common, but people in the serf castes face a barrier in marrying anyone in the upper classes. Each village is ranked from the highest and most powerful (the chief villages) to the lowest (the serf villages. And yes serfs). On the individual level, i.e., within the village, each person has their own caste rank. My village is actually commoner for instance, but my own rank is the warrior sub-class of the noble caste. My clan was one of the clans in my village chosen to fight for the chiefs in wars and battles Caste discrimination used to be quite prevalent, esp. against those in the serf classes, but it has declined substantially since the late 20th century

To give you just one example, here along with castes, there are sub-castes within those castes. Marriages take place in those sub-castes but from the ∆ GOTRA SYSTEM. ∆ So that there is no mixing of blood of a family, therefore even the gotras of mother, father and grandmother are seen. If they meet, then they become brother and sister, then that marriage cannot happen even if they are of the same caste. But here now this much does not happen in inter caste marriage, but if religion is different then a lot happens. 🙁🙁like end of family 😮

Our generation living and grown up in city definitely don't care about caste. Especially in cities like Mumbai, cause from childhood I've been interacting with literally all sorts of people from different states and languages. So it never really crossed our minds that caste is significant. I've been to Bangalore, Kerala and Hyderabad and have stayed there for solid 3-4 months in each city and the vibe was same. Used to see couples of all sorts. But in Kolkata it was different tbh. Everything felt strict regarding relationships and marriages. But again we are seeing lot couples from different caste and background marrying twice with each other in respect to their traditions and cultures. Another thing about caste is, our government itself gives lot of importance to it. So it's difficult to avoid it and hence it remains in the subconscious of people that caste is significant in our lives lol

Caste system is a system of birth based racial segregation of workers, it was introduced in largely Buddhist Indian subcontinent about 1200 years ago by Iranian fire worshippers who escaped to India after the Arab conquest of Persia, Higher castes are less than 15% and have higher percentage of Iranian DNA, Racism is the core of Brahmanical caste system, these migrating Iranians were responsible for genocide of Buddhists and eradication of buddhism in India, 95% of marriages in India are arrange marriages, arrange marriage is a mechanism to maintain the caste system, Indian parents from upper castes dont blink an eye killing their own kids if they marry someone from lower caste, this is the reality of Hindu/Brahman caste/varna based ugly religion.

Indian was a religious and moral society when it was a Buddhist country, 1200 years ago it all changed, they (Iranian Brahmans) killed all the Buddhist and eradicated Buddhism from India, now its a slave society where less than 15% upper caste Hindus (Higher percentage of Iranian DNA) rule over more than 85% lower caste Indians, they rape, torture, murder them whenever they want, they control everything, In Hindu/Brahmanical caste system which is a birth based segregation system of workers, all the manual labor has been assigned to lower and untouchable castes whereas all the non manual labour work has been assigned to higher castes, that is why the quality of Indian labor is very poor because the labor class is demoralized by birth by giving them the label of untouchable lower caste, and caste system is not like class system, it is like a building with multiple floors and there are no stairs connecting any of the floors. you will stay where you are until you die. We need a blood revolution in India to destroy Hinduism and Brahmans to become a modern and progressive country.

Being traditional doesn’t mean regressive either. We are happy that we have had huge legacy of socio religious reform movements where the base concept was humans are equal. And spiritually we all are same, we all are souls. So I hope these basic messages are remembered more by people of my country. Caste is basically like class of Europe... derived from Portuguese word Casta. Like Clergy - Brahmins, Kshatriya - Nobels, Vaishya - Traders/Peasants, Shudra - Nobels. Last Untouchable is not mentioned anywhere but developed out of social division during and later was mentioned in Manu smriti. It's just like the Royals of England don't marry locals...They find other nobles from Scotland/Wales. It is kind of similar. But Indian caste system is little different, because one time during 5th century there were some misinterpretations, and it resulted in believing that caste is based on birth. There were many reasons for that. Misinterpretation of word Varna and Jati. Truth be told caste was never to strictly followed before 1- 2 Century AD. Caste is basically called as Jati in Hindi, but Jati actually refers to Hierarchy more like Clan. Like many people in India will have names like Srivas, Dhobi, Raut which depicts that in the past their ancestors did some word related to their surname, but for many like Yadav, Rajput, Jatt, it is a clan. But both are considered as Jati/caste in Modern India, but it is very different.

All the upper caste people will say that caste system doesn't exist anymore. While who actually suffer will tell you the truth. Yes, some people marry outside their caste but upper caste 99% of times, will marry someone from upper caste if they are marrying outside their caste. And will never marry lower caste, forget about dalits and st and obcs. (Note few exceptions can be there) Upper caste will cry about reservation but will never redistribute their caste assets that their families acquired while supporting colonialism in India and repressing & looting the majority of indians. Upper caste are less than 20% and acquire 88% elite position. They used their caste resources to acquire those positions nothing special in their blood. Also it means around 80% obc, sc and st gets only 50% reservation. And even now they cry about reservations after 10% Ews quota that exclude sc,st and obc and only given to upper caste. Even so most of the reserved seats in govt. services and educational institutes are not filled. And the ones who get in using reserved seats are tortured by so called upper caste students and co-workers mentally. Many commit suicide in IIT because of caste discrimination. Girls are raped in India in rural areas (even inside temples) only because they belong to lower caste. Check newspaper and articles and you will see everything. Most of them are unreported and hidden from people. Imagine the pseudo-equality of this nation.

Choosing someone from your own varna(Caste) to marry isn't a discrimination, it's more about protecting your own genes & passing on your genetic qualities to your next generations. Ex. When you can get the same skill color from your 1000s of years old ancestors, type of nose your great great grandmother can easily appear on your face, then why you can not trust that your genetic qualities can also pass on to your next generations?? For example it's only Kshatriyas (Varna or Caste of Kings, Rulers, Warriors, fighters, sportsperson who form army) who used to take responsibility to protect the society & fight in case of a war thus possessing exceptional fighting & physical qualities, it's only them & their generations from both Kshatriya parents who used to sacrifice their lives for the country, their women used to become widow, their children used to become Orphans. Bhahmans (Varna or Caste of Educators, Priests, Saints, Gurus, Monks, Discovers, Scientists) who marry amongst themselves & protects their genes & pass on their specific qualities like intelligence to their next generations. a lots of whom give up their all materialistic life & work & think for society's wellbeing, only survive on Bhiksha (respectful begging) from society. a lots of time they used to spend years in mountains doing meditations to find solutions for the society like Buddha found enlightenment by leaving his materialistic life. Vaishya (Varna or Caste of Traders, entrepreneurs, businessmen, rich people) Shudras ( Workers, artists, servicemen) who always had a particular skill to work for the society, the skill which their ancestors passed on to him, which they had achieved mastery from generations of harnessing & practice. works like making metallic weapons & tools Now there is a factor of present day inter-caste Discrimination, which is a social problem not a religious on at all & there is no evidence that it existed before 1000 years ago. this discrimination only came after, invaders from Arab, Central Asia came to INDIA thus burned Indian universities, killed Millions, looted & demolished 100s of 1000s of temples which used to be source of knowledge at that time. Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) is the only religion, where there are more female goddesses than male gods, where many many Trees, plants, animals like cows, mother earth, the moon, the sun, planets of solar system, wind, fire, soil, Rivers like Ganga, even small water stream are considered as holly & worshipped. Hindus had been always vegetarians before foreign invasion & it's culture got mixed with Hinduism. still today more than 50% don't like to kill animals to fill their stomach. where can you find nature so much integrated in the Religion & culture? these thing can justify Hinduism's enlightenment, love, care & empathy towards nature which has always been there since 1000s of years & form oldest religion, oldest languages, oldest civilization of the world. INDIA is a land, from where 4 of the world's major religions made up of Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism & Buddhism originated. all four are just members of the same family which have same principles & value system of love & empathy towards other human beings & nature, unlike Abrahamic religions, which are just hollow block & only have a agenda to conquer & rule the world.

Just looking at major Indian newspapers and their matrimonial ads column would tell you how marrying inside the same caste is still relevant in Indian culture. I had two such friends, they both have the same story. Fell in love with a guy friend, some of their family knew about it and even liked the guy. But when they completed their college and the talk of marriage came, it was made clear that they cannot marry outside of caste. In India, for majority of people, Social Status matters more than the happiness of their kids. This is the case within a single religion, Imagine the hurdle for people who want to marry someone from another religion, or the people wanting to have a same-sex marriage.

So based on this, it just seems like the caste system has been systemically labeled and organized, but it doesn’t feel too different from how social classes work in other countries. While we like to talk about social freedoms and acceptance everywhere nowadays, social classes are still very much real almost everywhere, and it’s unusual for higher classes to marry lower classes, not just because of discrimination but because of lack of interaction. Someone who went to a private school in New York City and then studied Law in Harvard will be rather unlikely to marry a mechanic from the Bronx. Partly because there just aren’t many places where they’d interact, but also because there would be considerable social backlash around the higher class party. India probably has much stronger caste discrimination and conflict, and emphasizes it more, but let’s not pretend like most of our respective countries don’t also feature a reasonably large divide between the higher and the lower classes.

Inter caste is still okay. But what about inter-religious marriages ?? That's a even more deep and darker taboo in India. Your respect, your status, your social connections everything can get soiled if you have an inter religious marriage. This is normal India as of now.

This problem is mostly present in Rural communities and urban community with relatives in villages also practice this. Slowly the castes are being dissolved and with more urbanization we will see complete eradication of caste system maybe in 2-3 generations.

Anyone who wants to learn about caste in India should read the book 'Ants among elephants' by Sujatha Gidla. It puts a human face on the caste system and exposes its evils, warts and all. A very good read.

I am honestly a little surprised at these reactions. I am 43 yrs of age and my parents had an inter-caste marriage. And I did not know about it till the age of 14 - not because they wanted to hide the fact or anything. Just because it was an irrelevant piece of information. The topic of caste never really came up in our family discussions, even our extended family on both sides never mentioned it. One day when I came back from school, I was discussing my day with my Mom, as I generally did, when I mentioned how one of my closest friends kept going on and on about how she was an elite Brahmin. It was then that she asked me why didn't I tell her(my friend) so was I, and I was like "I am? Oh! I didn't know that!". So it was at the grand old age of 14 that the caste system I had read about in books became a reality for me. I suddenly was a Brahmin - and trust me, I did not see any wings sprouting upon knowing that. I then came to know my dad was a Brahmin and Mom was a lower caste. I was very surprised cuz my Mom's side of the family had more educated and well-placed relatives than my dad's side. My dad never had any qualms in revealing how money was always scarce in his growing up years. Some of my paternal uncles had to drop out of college to support the younger siblings' education. So even though I loved and respected both sides of my family, I always knew my mother's side had the higher social and financial standing. So basically, a person's caste never was , neither is , nor will be important for me. I am surprised - and more than a little disappointed - there aren't more responders saying the same.

This is very common story in bengali house didi. But i think if one is doing inter linguistic community , interfaith marriage then girl should see that how girls are treated in laws home. How much freedom to marry out of community they have. Because I have seen some hndu family they don't allow their daughter to marry out side but they are ok if their son marry outside. Typical patriarchal mindset. I don't think it's a good idea for liberal community woman to marry in a conservative community.

Atleast in my state it still is very much there when it comes to marriage .. These days people still marry people from different cast but you have to be very determined ...i don't believe in cast but my family does and if I end up marrying someone from so called lower caste my parents will literally stop associating with me .. I have tried to convince my parents castes are nonsense but they just don't even wanna listen to me anymore ... And even people from my generation ( I am 22) there are so many who are against intercaste marriages

Every cast has different cultures and Indian parents don't want to adjust with another culture, they think why don't you just find someone in our own cast and get married?? Everything will be easy. But you can't deny that we can fall in love with anyone so learn to adjust a little bit. In rurul places it might be different though cause they take this issue as their life depends on it.
