I tried to watch the new Dallas too, but not only did it fall flat, but I hated the way they changed Cliff's character into a man driven by revenge at all costs. As much as I always thought JR should have had control of Ewing Oil, Bobby had to win and honor Jock’s wishes. By doing so, it would allow Dallas to continue. @Alexander L Yeah, on a soap opera. In the real world, JR would've destroyed Bobby and his naivety like all ruthless businessmen do to amateurs. The only thing Bobby could do better than JR was be a bully and marry women that were absolutely horrific actresses. Pam, Jenna, April for starters and the dumb shit he was married to in the Dallas reboot on TNT. JR always got the hotter women so in the biggest battle of all, JR always won.

@@divyadijay2709 not necessarily. Bobby arc is similar to Michael corleone . Youngest brother who waa naive and didn't want to get involved with the family business, had an older brother who ran the business but was headstrong and another brother that was weak like fredo and Gary. Big brother gets shot and youngest brother gets pulled into the business and takes over . Unlike godfather oldest brother survives so there is a battle after the old man dies. When I watched Dallas it was Friday nights on CBS. 8pm was The Incredible Hulk, 9pm was The Dukes of Hazzard and 10pm was Dallas. When The Incredible Hulk was moved to Wednesdays for the remainder of its last season (1981-82), then it was The Dukes of Hazzard at 8pm and Dallas at 9pm with Falcon Crest moving into the 10pm slot. *Edit - It looks like Dallas jumped around a bit in its 1st and 2nd season. The 1st season was only 5 episodes (April 1978) and aired Sunday at 10pm. The first 4 episodes of season 2 (Sept/Oct 1978) aired Saturday at 10pm. Episodes 5-15 in season 2 went back to Sunday at 10pm. Then episode 16 of season 2 (January 26, 1979) is when it went to Friday nights and stayed there for the rest of the series (May 3, 1991). It did jump back and forth a bit from 10pm to 9pm but the majority of the run was Friday night at 9pm basically seasons 4 -13.

This was a great storyline. It spawned a lot of other subplots such as Bobby and Pam's marriage on the rocks, JR scheming with Holly Harwood and Walt Driscoll, and many more. I love the Dallas movies and their plots. The Dallas movies represent the best ending possible for the Ewing family and J.R. Ewing.... J.R. may not have ended up with Ewing Oil, but he knows John Ross will get his share from Sue Ellen some day. ... And J.R. controlled West Star Oil, so J.R. was actually more powerful than ever. ... The new Dallas show was disappointing the way it ignored that plot, and instead said J.R. was in the hospital and speechless for 20 years because Barnes beat him.

When Ray & Gary offered to help run the business JR pretty much told them to "Get Lost!" cruel as it was, but neither one of them had an entitlement. Jr was the oldest son he should have been made president of the company. Jock should have made Jr the president and Bobby directly under him and had a system of checks and balances put in place so Jr wouldn't go completely out of control.
@dt1111able
@dt1111able 7 жыл бұрын
JR tried to get out of that agreement to share the company equally when he had won, then of course wanted to stick to it once he realised he had lost... But that's not how life works, if you play that way, you've got to be able to take it back when it doesn't go your way. In any case, I wonder though if JR would really have forced it and followed that through? Or was he just trying to get out of it but would have backed down later and would that hand-written letter had stood up in court? Also, I don't get sth - the original typed will stated that Ewing Oil would just be divided equally but then the hand-written letter stated the contest. As JR had won the contest, why did Punk ask: "What about the letter?" JR had won the contest as the letter had stated??

dt1111able In the letter, winner got 51, loser 18, and the rest equally divided up by Ellie. JR was counting on Bobby leaving if he won, as his marriage was wrecked.

Bobby wasn't "sewing his wild oats." Bobby was the field man for Ewing Oil. He helped Ewing Oil with the dirty deals by bribing and blackmailing politicians from Austin to Washington. It was only when he married Pam that Bobby decided to settle down and get an office job at the company.

It was supposedly explained in the codicil to Jock's will that he wanted to prove to Bobby and J.R. that they could both work together amicably for the betterment of the company. That's what I remember anyways. Personally, I think the writers did it that way to keep Jock's memory alive a little longer in the show.
