+Rosannasfriend In this scene, Sue Ellen wasn't a full fledged alcoholic...yet...Every affair J.R. had, Sue Ellen was humiliated over and she drank more and more to offset the hurt and probably the hormones from her pregnancy. What we see here is a customary toast to pregnancy rather common in the 70's and still is...However, in the story, this was just a warning shot. To be honest, the writers never were taken to task over the potential of fetal alcohol poisoning on the child which would have caused physical or mental problems that may last a lifetime.

I don't think it's any way a defense, but I think a lot of men might have lost their temper had their wife just informed them she was carrying another man's baby, especially in such a smug way. I actually think cheating and getting pregnant are worse than him losing his temper one time over the fact that she did it. However, he's a much worse cheater than she is so I didn't feel bad for him, but if you were simply comparing who was worse in this one situation it was clearly her. As much of an SOB as he was I never once saw JR hit her before this, and I never once saw him hit her after this. If this was the only example of how he treated her I actually wouldn't think little of him that being said while I don't think he is a wife beater he clearly abused her throughout their marriage.
