The transformation of Larry Hagman from character Tony Nelson to JR Ewing was amazing. He went from a sitcom wimp to a conniving Texas oil man in short order. Whoever made the decision to cast him for the part deserves the same plaudits as the person who cast Peter Falk as Columbo.
