Dallas warming center set up for freezing homeless and those without power

With days notice, the Dallas-based nonprofit, OurCalling, has made a Herculean effort to help primarily the homeless and those who live with housing insecurity by setting up a warming shelter at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas. (DMN video/editing: Tom Fox)

Hey Texas sending prayers from rural Canada. I can’t do much from here but we do deal with extreme cold and power outages at times during the winter. If you have no heat stuff blankets and pillow into your windows to keep some of that heat from escaping. Also move your family into the centre of the house. The room you should be in should have as little perimeter walls as possible. Get as many blankets and pillows as possible as well as couch cushions and essentially build a Fort of sorts in that room. Keep everyone together. You can also use couch cushions on the windows. You may have to worry about pipes freezing and bursting. Any taps that feed hoses shut them off. Most of your pipes will probably be okay unless are on a perimeter wall. If your pipes are copper you can use a blow torch to de thaw them. People say it’s unsafe but I do it every year just be careful. And open up the taps throughout the house so the vapours can escape. Hang tough Texas, you’ll get through this

To experience a sudden temperature drop of over 30°C (or a variance over 60°), especially for the first time, would be like a shock to the system It could confuse all senses and sensibilities. We should plant native fruit trees in public parks, unoccupied urban areas, poor neighborhoods and schools to promote healthy eating and provide at least a snack to those in need. I understand this solution will take time but nature just need a seed and few days of care and rest it will take care of. You can watch a video on how to plant a local fruit tree using a seed. Even if 1 out of your 10 trees survives, it will feed many generations. Think about it. Take action...

Can't say I'm a fan of ourcalling or homeless shelters in general theft mistreatment unsanitary conditions tons of rules lots of mentally ill individuals unsafe environment etcetcetc I've been homeless in Denver all it takes is a couple sleeping bags and preparation
