I know this is an old video but I thought I'd comment on my experience. After doing whisky distillery tours in Speyside and then up north of Inverness we found that the "Dalmore hatefest" doesn't exist there and people love it. This meant that after tasting the Port Wood Reserve and the Cigar Malt back to back we came home with a Cigar Malt just because we could get it for 115 euros. After spending a couple of months with a long list of really decent whiskies that we returned with my wife and I have decided that we always enjoy the Dalmore and *a* Dalmore will always be in our Whisky vault even though we have a choice of a lot of other really great bottles. So, cheers to you for being honest about your opinions and not joining the mob. :-)

Since getting into whisky’s I do generally stay away from Dalmore but this sherry expression has become my October to December sherry dram. Grandparents were from England I suppose it brings back memories of them drinking sherry at Christmas time. It’s sweet, accessible, and “smooth” when people are over.

I've never found a Dalmore that has been a bad whisky. Not always the most complex but I've never been let down by any of their products. The Port Wood and King Alexander bottles are fantastic. I haven't had a chance to try the Sherry Select yet but now I may have to grab a bottle.

You know I'm actually getting into Dalmore. I still LOVE this 12 year old. Recently bought the Cigar Malt which I'm thoroughly enjoying. Port Wood is next on my list.

@@Gwhisky I have a bottle of their old Cigar Malt before they changed the formula. But I cannot bring myself to open the bottle. One day I'll have to do a side by side of the old vs. the new.

I’ve had a love-hate relationship with Dalmore for years. I hate the extreme amount of color they add, but love the brand marketing. My whisky club has tried all of the expressions from 12 to The King Alexander. In a blind tasting they all score much higher than most people expect.
@Gwhisky2 жыл бұрын
Yep. The eternal struggle between siding with the whisky scene, which (rightfully) wants a natural presentation and siding with your own personal visceral enjoyment of a whisky. Dalmore is a whisky I'm supposed to hate, and certainly the colourant is both annoying and unnecessary, but they have some genuinely good whiskies out there.
@GrantMcWilliams11 ай бұрын
Extreme as in 2% allowed by law? It isn't even 2% otherwise some bottles would be lighter than other as that's how they come out of the barrel so it's probably closer to 1% since you have to have wiggle room on both sides of the color spectrum. This rhetoric gets tossed around over and over again because Dalmore is in a bottle where the color is noticeable. If it were in a green Redbreast bottle nobody would say anything about it.
@silverfox1082 жыл бұрын
I agree need to up to 46 percent and remove the colour not needed. Dalmore is pricey in Canada at 150 per bottle here

So I've heard. Ridiculous price for this. Great whisky but not worth anywhere near that much...

Hi Geoff, i am back watching your review becuase this bottle has just offered sale here from 120 usd to just 40 usd and bought 4 bottles of this 12 sherry select. Got a chance to try this and indeed its good better than the regular 12. I should be in a look out if they go on sale again might buy more couple of bottle more.

I get the feeling that many people who criticise Dalmore do so purely on principle and have never tasted a Dalmore expression. It has become fashionable to dismiss them if you want to seem like a well-informed enthusiast.

True. I'm critical of their practices, but I'm unashamedly a big fan of their house style and many of their whiskies. They make good whisky!

What do you think about the comparison between MaCallan 12 Sherry Oak and Dalmore 12 Sherry select?
@Gwhisky Жыл бұрын
I like both for different reasons. The Macallan is more delicate and subtle, and the Sherry Select is bigger and fuller. I might go for the Dalmore, actually. Love that stuff.
@helioteran756 Жыл бұрын
@@Gwhisky I agree with you on that, they both come with their own delicious signatures. Also I’d hate to admit it but the Dalmore logo is appealing! My only regret on both of them is that they are not at 46% Abv.

Is it worth $80? Especially if you like the normal 12 year
@Gwhisky3 жыл бұрын
Not sure. $80 might be a bit much, but for me it's a huge step up from the regular 12. If you're a fan of the 12 I'm sure you'll like this, but it might sting if it's like double the price.

very good vid - but i very respectively disagree. i started getting into scotch a few years back and dalmore 12 was one of my fav bottles under $100. i bought the sherry for thanksgiving last week and it was amazing. my father in law and mother in law liked it so much they bought a bottle the next day. i also had macallan 12 sherry and i would rather have the dalmore. but again, its all personal preference, so i understand not everyone will enjoy it as much as me. what are your thoughts about gelndronach? maybe you can clarify this point...i read on a few scotch sites if it is listed as a sherry cask it cannot have artificial color?
@MShu-ux6wl Жыл бұрын
@allisonsmith9050 I just read your comment and I noticed your question about GlenDronach. I’ve repeatedly tried to enjoy the bottle of GlenDronach 12 in my cabinet. Unfortunately I just can’t. I find the nose absolutely beautiful, almost one of the best whisky’s ever sniffed. However, the finish is like the worst generic brand cherry cough syrup I’ve ever had, and that taste really seems to linger. I’d like to know how you compare this Dalmore to the GlenDronach 12, mainly because I have an unopened bottle that I’m a little nervous to try after my GlenDronach experience.
@allisonsmith9050 Жыл бұрын
@@MShu-ux6wlI have only had the 15, and it was my fav bottle of all time. Another one I REALLY enjoyed was Tamdhu. I have had the 12 and 15 year versions and both were great, but the cost difference between them was it not worth it for me.
@MShu-ux6wl Жыл бұрын
@allisonsmith9050, thanks for the added info. I opened the Dalmore 12 Sherry Cask Select and found it to be pretty great. So good it wasn’t remotely comparable to the GlenDronach 12. Really starting to think I got a bad bottle of it, since so many love it (and also the 15 that you like so much). But the Dalmore is a definitely a winner especially since I purchased it at $61 usd. I had only ever had the regular Dalmore 12 previously, and I think it was one of my first introductions to a “Highland” style. Since then I have discovered that a Highland Whisky, with just a hint of peat and the sea, is where my favorites lie (i.e. Clynelish, Oban, Old Pultney, or Loch Lomond). I can also gravitate on either side of that (more smoke and peat with a lighter Islay or a non-smoky Highland with even a bit of sherry like this Dalmore) depending on my mood. Thanks again!
