Not sure if it's been commented yet, but the tracking thing is both a software and hardware. GPS is a whole other system in a phone. It can be used in airplane mode because it's connection to satellites is different. Hence why the old school GPSs worked everywhere and didn't need a cellular connection. Think satellite phones. Another example, I use Google maps on all my connected devices. You can allow Google to track you whether you are aware of it or not, and when I fly, it tracks my location while flying. With my phone in airplane mode. Using the exact route my flight took (I added this because it could be assumed that after turning my phone back on, that Google would just insert a random travel route). Using the chips to find you needs the cell signal and software, but turning off your phone doesn't stop that from happening. Apps like find my iPhone can act like that's a thing but it's not. The mobile app Lookout security had a feature (not sure if they still do), where you could text a code to your phone, and even if it was off would turn it on, make a noise and send you it's location. I think Google's device location works similarly. Sevice to say that like LoJack, if they (and I'm going to assume the government) want to find you, keeping your known phone intact isn't the way to do it. Basically movies have to make things dramatic in a believable way. Also, I too was taught that camel humps were for water. Never really thought to question that.

I use to work for TSA & Tahir is absolutely correct about dressing appropriately on a buddy pass. You are not just representing the flight attendant but the entire airline they work for. I have seen people get turned away bc this lady had on yoga pants (camel toe on fleek) so they told her she would have to go change in the restroom but she started acting loud & crazy causing the flight attendant major problems.
