Hello folks, welcome to our KZbin homesteading journey!
We live in Central Victoria, Australia, on an off-grid property where we grow our food, raise animals and live lightly on this earth.
In this video I show you the damage the cockatoos have made in my vegetable gardens and what I'm doing about it.
I hope you enjoy watching and you're enjoying some gardening this week.

So disappointing to see the damage the cockatoos made to your garden, Amy. I can't wait to see how you make your extra hoops as I am wanting to make some for my garden. All the best!

@@wilcarcottagewaubra thank you, it’s so disappointing but I’m hopeful I’ll keep them away. I’ll just have to keep checking and covering things until I’m sure they’ve given up. 🤞

Urgh so heartbreaking. It’s the rats and possums that destroy mine 😢

Oh the rodents and possums can be annoying too! We also have hares that cause issues as well.

All that hard work ... gone! 😢 On the bright side, your compost bin will love all those juicy leaves, etc. Netting it will have to be. ❤ From Central Victoria.

Is it possible that due to limited natural resources they are searching for food? Would it be worth finding a secluded spot on your property and throwing seeds to grow them their own natural wild garden, maybe include some native species as well, including shrubs and small trees? Sorry this happened, but I’m enjoying your content 😊

They eat some of our chickens food and eat the onion grass in our paddocks but sometimes decide to come in the garden and be destructive. They don’t appear to be eating any of the food we grow. They sometimes tear branches off our fruit trees too. I’ll mow a patch out in the paddock, they like it when we do because it’s easier for them to dig up the onion grass and eat the bulbs. Thank you for the suggestion! I shall also look into more natives to grow for them, they do like the bottlebrush we’ve got growing at certain times of the year. I wonder if there’s a reason for chopping my plants at the stem like why rabbits ring bark trees… maybe I’ll do some research. Thanks again!

I see the cockatoos like the noisy teenagers of the neighbourhood when they fly in all the other birds go crazy and the cockatoos just destroy they love our loquats when they r in season also can’t grow sunflowers either as soon as the flower opens they are there ripping them apart.

@@NaomiJane80 they are like noisy teenagers, I like that 😂 They love ripping things apart. So sad you can’t grow sunflowers. I’m rushing outside whenever I hear them squawk. Unfortunately when they land in my garden they can be quiet for some time and have already destroyed things before they make a noise. We’ve seen them less since getting the dogs though.

They eat up houses in some areas too. The ones here have a few goes at my garden each year but then they seem to leave the garden alone again until the sunflowers have seeded. I don’t mind them eating some sunflowers. I hope they continue to stay away from your garden.

Great idea, I hung cds around when we first moved here but they fell to pieces after a few years. I might do it again. Thanks!

What was that ad on tv ? Was it for pasta ? Where the man had all those cans attached to string and he pulled on them when he saw the birds ?

Oh I can’t remember an ad like that. I have tried cds in the past to keep the birds away, but it only seemed to work if the sun was shining.
