If he deems a no fix, it can still be fixed, but it's not practical nor economical to do it (it can be more expensive than a new device), but if you really want it to be repaired for a sentimental value or similar you can still find a tech with less work than him to try and fix it for a higher price.

If Alex deems it a no-fix, it’s usually because the amount of time to diagnose and repair is not worth the time/effort

One of the most bizzare thing I've seen. As a PCB designer myself, i have no idea why the PCB uses silkscreen to deal with unused pins, instead of using the standard footprint to have all the pins soldered and the chip properly secured to the borad. Great job by the way, happy new year Alex

Hi Alex! I run a repair shop in Greece. Love your content not just on repairs but also you tend to give sound business advice when you are working on something. You are like the Arnold Schwarzenegger of repair guys. 😂 In my shop, I never have this idea that I know everything. No one in repairs should. I just want you to know, If you would sell tutorials for different methods of testing and troubleshooting (no trade secrets just basic stuff) I would happily PAY a monthly fee for one video a month. So what does those unconnected pins actually do?

The chip is an Alcor SC908SN, which is a flash controller/USB interface controller. Some similar chips from Alcor has FMDATHx pins on that side of the chip, which are supposedly only are supposed to be used with dual channel flash memory modules only. Otherwise the FMDATHLx pins are used alone, when in single-channel mode. This would be some sort of dual OctoSPI interface that work at the same time for dual-channel. But those pins that are unconnected (FMDATHx) are both I/O, an everything would screw up if shorted, so the controller would think that it should communicate with memory in dual-channel mode, when it can't do that. The flash memory would be located on the other side of the PCB.

Ho Ho 2024! Unfortunately, units like this shear off & break up and may also damage what they were plugged into. Saved units may become used again or used in projects as drives or even more memory in some areas. Thanks for sharing this with us! - Ken.

As always beautiful work Alex! I have one question maybe it is unrelated but I hope you see this one... I am sure this issue happens to many people`s laptops , my Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 laptop has a buzzing sound like a crackling sound whenever I put it to charge. There are 2 USB-C ports which I can charge it with (both of them on the left side next to each other) and this issue is a very common problem on Lenovo laptops. I want to open and check the motherboard to identify problem but maybe you faced similar issue before , can you think of any reason why it could happen?

if it wasn't plugged in and powered up at the time. i would disassemble it and soak it in distilled water for a few hours. then lightly scrub it with a soft bristle paintbrush or something similar. rinse it off with more distilled water and let dry in a warm place for a couple days to get rid of the majority of the water. after that if you have a low temp stove 150f to 170f or a food dehydrator big enough put it in for 20-30 min stove 2-4 hours dehydrator to make sure all moisture has been removed from the board. reassemble and you should be good. if it had power at the time of the water ingress your only option would be a repair shop.

I noticed that your C: drive is in the red with 15.9. If you want your OS to run smoother you need to transfer some applications and files onto drive D:. Red means you don't have enough free space for OS, application, and file operations which means slowing down your OS and applications.
