The female Ralts will always become a Gardevoir and it retains its ability after evolution. The male Ralts however not only becomes Gardevoir, but Gallade as well and the latter changes its ability upon evolution.

We had somewhat similar situation. The gameboy colour and gameboy advance were not sold in India (they were nowhere to be seen) so I had no idea about these game until I came across a video on KZbin 😌 and that's when I played Pokemon Ruby on emulator for first time.
