I am very crazy when it comes to packing my booking for grading. I make sure that I put a cardboard on either end of the stack and make sure there is a buffer around each edge of the cardboard. That way the cardboard takes the brunt of the impact instead of the comic. That said, I would never send those modern books in for grading unless there is a real good key significance and it is a limited issue like 1:50 or better incentive or limited print run.

I started sending my books to CGC in Gemini mailers in the cgc box. I use the larger box that takes 10 slabs that has the card board buffer on the bottom, top and sides. I try not to send bundles of books larger then 10 comics in a mailer also, I worry that the weight of say 15+ slabs is more likely to get dropped by the carrier. My last shipment had 3 slabs and 4 mailers(23 comics) in the box and fit nice and snug. I figure if the slabs can make it to me in one piece, they should be okay heading back to Florida. The books you got back graded are great and I myself sent in a couple of the ones you had. Great video Cheers.

Brutal. Thanks for sharing as it's definitely a learning experience for all of us

Yep. Lesson learned: replace all bags and boards with the BCW ones I use that gives room in the bag and does not let the comic slide around. I also need to make sure I wrap the books better inside the box since the box I use is not that much larger than the size of the comic. It's good to show my failures to remind everyone that I'm human and not just an Internet celebrity like The Wahoo.

I put my books inside Gemini mailers and then put those inside a larger box along with packing material.

Anyone can grade what they like - but why would you slab any of those books? They cannot be worth more than the purchase, slab & mailing costs.

I had the same experience corner crunch sending books to CGC. Most likely your books where dropped while at cgc not in transit if it is well packaged.

The boxes that you use are durable and will probably be fine 99 out of 100 times but I always have concerns about corner crush. I have made a habit of placing books within a normal Gemini or a square box, wrapping it in bubble wrap and placing that within another box (often a 1095 Priority Mail box) for CGC submissions. However, the difference in cost for me to send an extra 12oz to CGC from here is negligible because it is a short distance. I imagine it might be a significant difference in cost when sending across the US. To the chagrin of my wife, I hoard boxes in the garage so I have something appropriately sized on hand most of the time.

Unfortunate about the damage. Fortunately, they weren't real big value books. I guess we can take this as a teachable lesson to rebag before grading if the bags and boards are questionable.

Sounds like those books didn't have any bubble around them. 😅

Correct. I added some, but only along the edges. I had packed my book this way for several previous submissions, but got lucky with those since the box was never dropped or damaged before. Completely my fault and wanted to share the experience.

This is one of the many reasons I am just not grading anymore. I send so many 9.8 candidates in, and they come back 9.2-9.4-9.6 with no grader's notes. Some were damaged by CGC, and they don't even own up to their mistakes. I am not a rich guy, and I can't afford to CPR these slabs repeatably, which I think CGC wants us to do. Now, they stay in top loaders until further notice.

Talk about throwing money down a rat hole…….I quit grading years ago. I’ll grade only if I plan on selling and it’s even worth doing….?

I know what CGC would say. "Tough noogies".

Some beautiful books there. Shipping horror stories make my stomach drop!

You sent your books in just a gemini mailer? You didn’t put the gemini inside another box with a piss ton of bubble wrap? You deserve what happened then.

You're right! Lesson learned and I'll be using a different shipping method next time.

CGC doesn’t really care about the books, just as long as they get their money

Slabbing is subjective and overrated, especially with the cost……it’s actually ridiculous
