Oh my god thank you for finally making a thumbnail that doesn't have the final result. One of my personal favorite things about forging and restoration videos is seeing the transformation first hand, having the finished product right on the 'title' so to speak ruins quite a bit of the enjoyment for me

Your the first person ive seen, actually fold the Damascus right and then layering it with softer steel inside. Little sad you didnt forge it by hand with proper full tang, but the weld looked solid enough for a kitchen knife. Lol
@brysonalden5414
@brysonalden5414 14 күн бұрын
Actually the steel inside the damascus layers is high carbon steel, not softer steel. There'd be no point in doing san mai with soft steel for the edge!

I have some questions. You chose not to pack the canister out with powdered steel. You chose to weld on a tang rather than forge it out. You quenched in water then again in oil. No doubt the knife looks good, but why choose to do it this way?
@AIDENALMIGHTYY
@AIDENALMIGHTYY 11 күн бұрын
I think he went without powdered steel as to stay as true to the title as possible (I obviously may be wrong since these are just my speculations) and maybe he welded on a tang as to not ruin the Damascus pattern possibly. As for the quenching I haven’t the slightest clue lol
@AIDENALMIGHTYY
@AIDENALMIGHTYY 11 күн бұрын
And I also believe there wasn’t enough material on the blade to forge out a tang though I might be mistaken

A little powdered steel would have gone a long ways into making this billet a bit for operator friendly. Probably would have had your initial billet made in 2 or 3 heats.

It would have looked 100 times better, if the original outline of the bearings was still there. The next time you do a can job like this one, coat the inside of the can with Magnesium Oxide to make it easy to remove the can, and fill in the voids with metal powder and don't fold it over. Just smash it all flat so the balls and races can be seen. Remove the bearing shields before fusing the bearings together.

Сталь с подшипников вполне подходит на режущую кромку, не обязательно было вставлять пластину в ламинат. Можно было оставить обойму на лезвие, а обкладки сделать из шариков.
