If one knows this Schubert lied well, (and I have worked on it for a while now, ) you cannot help but applaud the superb and effortless musicianship which Dame Baker brings to this performance. I have the music before me and I marvel at how intimately and gracefully she has made this song her own. Breath support is incredible. Beautiful phrasing. How she has fully entered into the spirit of the song and sings, really, from inside the music! Thank you for posting this wonderful video.

There is an earnest commitment to Baker's near embodiment of Schubert's songs. All her virtues are on display, especially the glorious deep and resonant low notes and her passionate yearning in the higher ranges.Truly ,subtly, magnificent.

In this lied Janet Baker and Murray Perahia give an emotional interpretation. They show that when art is at the highest level, it opens up to universality and becomes a necessity. Thank you for posting this concert ! Other great versions are Kathleen Ferrier and Fritz Wunderlich.

Me encanta. Gracias, Dame Janet, hermosa....!!!!

Thanks for the 'bravo' Hideaway3! My father played Janet Baker and Christa Ludwig all the time. He always said: Remember these voices and names boy These ladies are the absolute top. I always remembered his words and the voices. I have all the records they made and have to say, that is all I need. Nowadays we have a lot of great singers but imho they never will reach the level of Christa Ludwig or Janet Baker.

You, noble Art, in how many grey hours, When life's mad tumult wraps around me, Have you kindled my heart to warm love, Have you transported me into a better world, Transported into a better world! Often has a sigh flowing out from your harp, A sweet, divine harmony from you Unlocked to me the heaven of better times, You, noble Art, I thank you for it, You, noble Art, I thank you! _________________________________________ To Music English Translation © Richard Wigmore Beloved art, in how many a bleak hour, when I am enmeshed in life’s tumultuous round, have you kindled my heart to the warmth of love, and borne me away to a better world! Often a sigh, escaping from your harp, a sweet, celestial chord has revealed to me a heaven of happier times. Beloved art, for this I thank you!

Born in 1933, and retired at age 57. I listened today to a 45 minute interview with her right here on You Tube. She did tell quite a bit about her life, and her absolute dedication to MUSIC, but never did she mention what she had planned to do with the rest of her life. I am very interested and curious to know how she spent her time after retiring. Her marvelous voice just kind of haunts me, and makes me wonder about it. Does anyone know how Dame Janet is doing now? I'd like to know.

"a long-standing chancellor of the University of York and a patron of the Leeds piano competition. But she says that her work as a singer in a way prepared her for retirement. In a 1967 interview she revealed that she was reading Jung. "The stuff of performing has to be very much an interior journey," she says now. "... My interest in what makes a human being function was applied to roles, but has also been part of something that helps me in my retirement." Interviewed by Wroe, Guardian, 2012

A paradox, I heartily agree with you, concerning her singing opera and her singing songs: With songs, she is able to sing with more nuances of softness and power-forte and mezza voce. I feel the same about most singers, for even when the operatic score calls for piano, very few singers are able to sing piano, and certainly not, pianissimo in the opera house!
