Dame Joan was the voice that made me an Opera fan fifty years ago. She is more than Stupendous!
@timsuffolk17 жыл бұрын
She has of course, been honoured by The Queen, being made a Dame in 1979, and also she has the highest personal award that The Queen gives, the Order of Merit, restricted to 21 people only. Truly well deserved, the very greatest of singers.

The year after I lost my Mother, I saw this tribute. How she managed to go on the NY Town Hall was an inspiration. God bless you La Stupenda! You're with your beloved Mama now.

I was very lucky to have seen Dame Joan at least a dozen times in opera and concert. I’ve been thrilled by so many great voices over the years, but from a technical perspective, she really was The Voice of the Century.

An appropriate and touching tribute to this marvelous human being and one-of-a-kind musical treasure. I feel blessed that my life coincided with her amazing musical career.

This brings back such fantastic memories! I heard Dame Joan many times in opera and concerts in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego! There will never be another soprano like her. She is missed. It's a bit sad that she had to be helped up to acknowledge the applause...

People have commented about the supposed lack-lustre reception Dame Joan receives from this audience. But this event isn't opera specific, so she wont necessarily receive the type of acclaim that might've occurred at a gala tribute at the Met or the Sydney Opera House.

Thanks so much Sue Ann Nivens for posting this rare gem. I'm wondering whether you've found Marilyn Horne's Kennedy Awards night. She is still among us teaching her Master CLasses while fighting pancreatic cancer. Does anyone have the Kennedy Center Honors that includes Marilyn Horne (Jackie). I'd love to see it!

I'm sure most of those who give Dame Joan standing ovations don't even know her or have never seen her in an opera.
@johnpickford4222 Жыл бұрын
100Singers: That could be said about many of the Kennedy Ctr. Celebrants. The audience attends to be seen and enjoy the show or for a particular honoree. Elton John and Warren Beatty were also being feted and that drew a big crowd. Sadly, I thought this segment minimized her accomplishments and the time spent performing in the U.S., on television and how the U.S. in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s drove the performing arts.

If Callas was "The Diva of Opera" (in the best and worse sense of the word)...if Price was .“the Stradivarius of singers,”..and if Caballe' was "La Superba"...then to my mind, Joan Sutherland was "Opera's Extraterrestrial". Any and everything that came out of her throat, was just otherworldly in my opinion. To quote what Aretha Franklin said about the late, Whitney Houston "she had a gift...and it was a gift that separated her from the pack". That describes Sutherland to a tee, in the realm of opera. When I hear her voice singing "Casta Diva", Im always left thinking 2 things 1) no one else should be allowed to sing it, except her...and 2) everything is alright with the World in that moment.

I agree with you iriisblue--they could have found much better musical clips to go with the descriptions. The "Lover Come Back To Me" clip with Dinah and Ella shows her sense of humor, as well as the effortless range and power and beauty of her voice, for example. Ah well, at least she received the honor.

From what I understand, this is an edited selection of the video that was shown to the audience to fit CBS' time schedule. A newspaper review stated there were audible gasps from the audience during Joan's presentation.

Dark Feather: They were desperate one year and selected Sills. Not really, but this an American based honor system and she was an American although nationality does play a part. Sills also moved from singing with the New York Opera to running it very successfully and the becoming the chair of Lincoln Center.
