My grandfather worked for RR during the war, he was a mechanical engineer and was part of team/teams working on getting more power via the superchargers. He didn't say much about it in his later years other than 'we did what was needed to be done'. My farther was contacted later in life after my grandfather had died by another son of the engineers working on the Merlin and was able to give us much more detail on the work carried out by my grandfather and many others as it was no longer covered by the official secrets.

Fantastic flying and a great video. What I find strange is that, to me, the flight characteristics of these rc planes look more authentic than engined models. The moves are less erratic and snappy, making the flight much more graceful and realistic.

Beautiful model aircraft, flown and filmed superbly, as an expat Capetonian from many (30+) years ago, that view of Simon's Town, and in the distance Gordon's Bay, never gets old, and when there is no wind, there is always the Brass Bell down the road! I assume you fly on the other side of the mountain in the SE wind, but with the cloud cover it looks like rain, so is this a NW?? Maybe a SW?

Great video! The English designed and built Rolls Royce Merlin engine powered both planes and saved the Mustang from obscurity. The Packard Merlin was built under license by the Detroit automaker with design enhancements from the engineers and assembly line workers. I'm assuming these are the same scale, so does flying them as gliders tell you any differences in flight characteristics which would have applied to the actual aircraft? Is one easier to fly or more manouverable for example?
@Two_Oceans_Slope_Soarers7 ай бұрын
Flying a power plane as a glider requires a lot of attention to energy management. So from this perspective it requires an additional skill. The actual flying is similar and if there is enough smooth lift, can actually be easier. Landing is much more tricky because of not having a runway.
