I once had an Army PFC try to take his life right in front of me, threaten to take me with him if I either tried to stop him, or if I tried calling for help, and he was also threatening to go after the lives of any first responders, if any were to arrive. He died on the drive to the ER within eyesight of the ER for a very long 1.5-2 minutes, and somehow came back to life and ultimately survived, only to years later end up racking up a violent criminal record including some form of terrorism charges. The hospital initially refused to treat him until they had his insurance information on file, which I had to gather and obtain in the heat of him loosing his motor skills again and getting on & off the waiting room floor. That situation scrambled my brains. But what I didn’t have to do was put pieces of him in my pockets… May god grant peace to all those affected by these types of situations.

Great podcast as usual. The topic of what you are willing to lose in regards to body parts and still living is a true conversation that occurs all the time. I imagine this discussion may have offended some people especially those carrying on in life with these grievous wounds. But, I totally agree with your assessment and opinion. No way would I want to live missing a cock or my limbs. Better off just checking out, and coming back in then next life whole again. Thanks for keeping me entertained while driving.

In Canada you can actually get doctor assisted death where a doctor or nurse administers the drugs (generally injection). Oregon and several other states have assisted death for terminal illness but they just provide the drugs, you have to be able to self administer (drink a glass of barbituates in juice or whatev without assistance). Most of the states that allow it have residency requirements, but I think Oregon and Vermont recently lifted residency requirements.

I was in the ARV 10-11 with 101st. That place sucks man. We took a lot of casualties in that area due to IEDS. They had them in the walls, irrigation pipes, under walkways and anywhere they could put one. Not a fun place to walk around. The compound that you mentioned that got hit with the VBIED was Bravo Co. 2/502. We were at Ghundie-Ghar and became QRF on that and had to help dig my buddies out.

Well, you know Andy. Even in death he would like one last mission set. Could you see the briefing... "Okay, we're going to drop a dead SEAL in a wingsuit using a GPS guidance system. He will circle the target three times to gain airspeed. Time to target 6 minutes. Mission parameter, must engage Al Shabbab commander through bedroom window. What is the risk assessment on this?" "He could wake up sir. Since he hasn't actually been briefed on the mission he could wake up and deviate for coffee." "Damn. Always with the negative waves Moriarety. So how do we solve that problem?" "Put a Black Rifle Coffee Mug in the commanders bedroom." "Damn, I like the way you think. Go for launch." "Aye, Aye sir." @@mikkoj1977

Personally I hated midterm leave. The mindfuck totally disrupts the natural flow of a cohesive team. If the team can R&R together, maybe better. My last holiday in Afghanistan, I signed the waiver to not take leave and ended up with forced fed leave. I understand the concept, but not a fan. If it's essential to take a break, maybe consider letting us do the job quicker!
