If u truly watch. Elena has always been there for Damon too. They both have hurt each other through the series, no relationship or friendship is perfect. Elena helped save Damons humanity, helped make him a better person, saved his life atleast 3-4 times from season 1-4. She always defends him and stands up for him. She even stood in between Stefan and Damon, and stopped Stefan from going after Damon. She stayed with him the entire time he was dying from a wolf bite, and kissed him in his bed then too. Season 3, was huge for Delena. They got much closer and bonded like never before. They kissed on her front porch in 3×10 and made out in 3×19. All as she was human, and it was complicated with Stefan. She falls IN love with Damon, while she was with Stefan. But she always liked him and was attracted to him since the day she met Damon. There is a reason for all the build up between Damon and Elena.
