@Tayler WIGHTMAN True that . Why he considered her a friend / cared about her is because she knew exactly what he was feeling , even about Elena. And she also understood why he was fighting it . Rik was his friend , but didn't understand him this way & he couldn't share his feelings completely , he had to mask it . I think years after he found someone to share his feelings with because they actually understood . And as his " human " feelings were pushing in he felt responsible that she died for him . But as Rose said , " Damon wants to care but when he does he runs away from it " . The exact representation of that is shown later that night on the road . So I feel every relationship doesn't have to be romantic . So as much as I would have loved to see rose more , I liked this scene in a bitter sweet way . Some relationships or friendships are meant to be that way , short lived but it impacts your life .
