She always has something to eat or drink when she's at Dan's place. It was probably a coincidence, but knowing that book Blair was struggling with an eating disorder, it just casts Dan in such a comforting light. I also feel like this is one of the rare times we experience the female gaze as a third party, and not through the female lead's lens- whenever he describes Blair, he displays so much respect and admiration for her intellect, her ambition, her talent as a strategist, whilst still acknowledging her beauty. He saw every, every bit of her and loved her for it. It was such a disappointment to see that mutual rise in maturity between Dan and Blair, only to have the air knocked out of it in few episodes.

@@marpledays i disagree, i believe dan was fully and truly in love w blair coz, unlike w serena, he respected her, was understanding of her feelings (31:21), and (pre-S6) never judged her decisions. Had he held her up to the standard that was defined by 'Clair' from his book, he would've judged and berated her whenever she didn't live up to that standard, just like he did w serena, but thats exactly what he DIDN'T do (pre-S6). He was always there for her in her time of need and supported her happiness above all else, even his own desire 2 be w her (Dan: Blair, your prince is out there waiting for you. It might not be me or Chuck, but he's out there - 4x18). This is y he tried to get her w ch*ck despite being in love w her himself because that is what he believed would make her happy. Unlike w serena, dan knows a time a when he disliked, rather HATED, blair 4 all her cruelty, classism and elitism (Dan himself is elitist too, although he's too pretentious to admit it). Despite all this he manages to fall 4 her, wonts and all. Finally, when he decided to be selfish enough to pursue blair himself he went 4 it and succeeded. Blair was the happiest she ever was when she was w him and that's what's important to me after seeing her be emotionally (and once even physically) abused by that basstard who treats her like his property for so long (Chuck: You'll never marry anyone else. You're mine - 4x20). Her being 'in love' w ch*ck still was a writers decision (plus ch*ir fans were sending death threats to the writers to get their desired endgame). With ch*ck she was reduced to a weak, snivelling wreck (Blair: What I want is to be a powerful woman. But whenever Chuck’s around I just feel like a weak little girl. - 4x7). While with dan she is finally an equal in the relationship and doesn't fade into the background ( Blair: Dan is my best friend and when we're together it's great. I feel strong and safe. - 5x24). I'm not saying dan was perfect even b4 cheating on her (which serena manipulated him into doing but still is his fault as he decided to trust S b4 even consulting his own gf) but he was by far the best love interest blair had in terms of how he treated her b4 + during their short-lived relationship.

That's when he showed his true self to her. He manipulated her the whole time, put on a show where he pretended to care and wasn't there out of a good will. Let's not forget he ruined her wedding out of selfishness. I loved them as friends but I really don't see where some of you get all that from in the few episodes they had together as a filler couple. It was clear he never loved the true Blair, tried to change her into the Book version he wanted and even said, she doesn't like schemes and takedowns which is part of her personality. As Chuck said Nate and Dan are both fools for wanting her to change. He didn't accept her dark sides despite him being GG himself (also her kid loss is smth I can't forgive Dan for, he never got any consequence nor apologised to her instead he acted like her savior) I disagree with the fact that Blair was happy since she wrote pages about missing and loving another man, she used Dan then threw him away. Let's not forget that every character on that show is emotionally abusive and were violent at some point especially Blair. She even slapped Dan. I always thought Louis was good or the best optiom for her until Blair ruined him. In my eyes her marrying someone like Chuck was fitting for her character as a whole. He was/had everything she wanted and desired: wealth, power, status, fame. Nothing that Dan could give her and in the end she became a strong powerful businesswoman whilst living paris, living her dream and Dan ended up as a terrible writer according to the reboot. She wasn't like Serena who wanted out of her world and Dan seemed more like an old money affair but I wanted her on her own, sailing away with Serena. You wrote quite a long response, a little hard to read as much as I adore the friendship, I don't see parts of what some of you interpret into them, my apologies 🥲

Even her fashion, make up and overall appearance took a turn to the worse until she broke things off with him and started wearing headbands again. This was probably done intentionally by the writers. Blair was someone introduced to us deeply hurt by her friends actions of sleeping with her boyfriend, claiming she would never do something like that. Yet years later out of nowhere, without any build up, she does exactly that despite one episode before praying for Chuck's life, losing her Child. She gets into a relationship with him despite Dan not offering her anything she always loved. Unlike Serena she never wanted out of this world. It was her world. She loved power, status, fame, wealth, the publicity and the society. For her settling with a man who gives her that is very in character and as the show went further - sadly rushed - she developed into a successful designer over the years. Rather than adding this 5 episode relationship where by no means, I saw a progress or any hinted character development, if anything it showed for me how it wasn't for her and that's not Blair. She kept writing about another man in her diary, insulting everything about Brooklyn and Dan himself. How is that progress? She used him whilst she was vulnerable because she needed a friend. If we go by Gorgina'a words Dan manipulated her into it whilst she was mentally and emotionally hurting.

I was a Chair supporter back in the day when the show aired. And it didn't make sense to me to put these two together.. but now that I see this again as an adult, I can see the real chemistry. Both physically and intellectually. He subconsciously always had a soft spot for her, even when she only offended him and was hostile to him. He was always by her side, helping her and supporting her in all ways. And she would always lean into him for a real support and genuine affection. It was just a matter of time before they reached out to each other in time. I am sure if the hype for Chuck was not so strong during the time it aired, these two would have been endgame!

I think from the very beginning Dan and Blair are what the showrunners and writers wanted to be endgame. The ever-growing friendship between them, acknowledging one another's flaws first and then slowly learning each other's strengths and the beauty in those strengths shows that the showrunners had carefully thought this out. Serena and Dan were never meant to be the last for the entirety of the show, Serena for Dan was supposed to be the stepping stone for him to find his equal in Blair, and the same goes for her. Chuck was Blair's stepping stone to finding herself which would have led to Dan. I think although the narrative changed throughout seasons and the original plan for them to get together had also changed, their getting together was never random, it was a natural progression of two people hating each other and learning to be healthy being in each other's presence to, learning to love, to eventually embrace true love and equal love in one another. I don't think the showrunners ever predicted the number of fans loving Chuck and Blair's dynamic so much, and their toxic relationship becoming a very appealing and the very attraction for the audience to the show. And because of those fans deeply loved the toxic dynamics and relationships, the showrunners became scared when people started to compare Dan's affection for Blair to Chuck's, even when Chuck should have been the villain of the entire show. Deeming the fact he tried to assault Serena in the first few episodes along with Jenny and then later slept with Jenny while she was underage. Dan and Blair had a clear understanding of one another, in their flaws, strengths and their bodies. and I will forever be a Dair shipper. While I can see the appeal of Chair, I will never understand anyone who supports that ship/relationship and will immediately see it as a red flag.

Sorry to break your heart but non of that was the case Chuck and Blair was the writers and showrunners endgame since S1 (they love them together). They always talked about these 2 would be final just that a show needs drama. They just didn't have much ideas left by S5, tried to explore a new random dynamic till the final will they won't they ending that's why these 2 here dated. Even in the reboot the admit it failed bc they didn't have a couple (love story) like Chuck never Blair who till this day is very popular and carried the show. I think in a better world, Blair and Dan would have a healthy, realistic, romantic relationship. Blair would still be a Queen, but what she needs is someone to support her. Chuck is too self involved at times to be with Blair. They both are too much for each other and they end up bringing out the worst in each other. I know, it's portrayed as an epic love story but they're kind of destructive. Dan has the right amount of love, patience, and resilience she needs to reach her full potential. He knows her well enough to get her references, and he knows deep down that even if Blair can be a bit much, she has a good heart. I think in real life, he'd be a much better partner for her.

This just popped into my recommended all of a sudden. I remember loving this ship when the show was airing. The slow burn was soooo good, and I was just so much more compelled by them than the “endgame” ships. They just seemed so… almost real, I guess? That their respect and appreciation for each other developed naturally over time, through seeing all sides of each other, the good and the bad. So when they actually got together, it felt so earned. I hated how they were handled in the end, so much of the character development and growth they went through together was really thrown out the window in the final season. They are both not good people, not by a long shot - but they did undergo character arcs, and I think I would have felt more satisfied if I had seen those arcs properly fulfilled. I mean, I do think the villainization of Dan was interesting in the final season (and as an adult I absolutely can see how his “holier than thou” attitude came full circle here), but him being gossip girl? not so much lol. And Blair backtracking on all of her growth and still perceiving him as an outsider? I didn’t like that either.

they are too good for this show. furniture fans like to say this was "forced"... where? if anything, the story was organically bringing these two together more and more each season especially the latter half. but slowly because they had so many prejudices about each other. it was hinted at already in s3 in snippets when blair had that dialogue to DAN of all people about how she was sad about who she was becoming and "who else could love her but c*uck" because that's the "love" she felt she deserved... indicating he wasn't right for her. it showed she already cared about dan's opinion of her and he thought she did deserve better, even when they weren't friends!! that's the type of dialogue of second, better love where you realize yourself thanks to that person and discover sides you didn't even know you had. that's what dair is. and it's honestly the best thing gg ever produced, no matter how much they tried to tear it down last minute for fanservice (that's forced). more people remember their met steps scene when he gives her the crown than that most unromantic, tragic "wedding" to keep c*uck out of jail. .... not to mention there is literally confirmation from the writers they always wanted to go there ever since s1 when dan came to comfort blair after she had an argument with serena, proved more by the fact that they scrapped a scene where dan came to blair's essay competition in s1 but her mom didn't! penn said blair was dan's soulmate, leighton said blair was her best self with dan and even ed westwick said dan was much better for blair. no wonder furniture fans are fuming everytime they are brought up.

just finished my first rewatch after not watching for years and dair literally blew me away 😭 ? and it caught me so off guard, because i don’t remember reacting that way to them before. anyway both leighton and penn have amazing chemistry, had me laughing and blushing at their parts together, the romantic and even platonic scenes are all perfect. it’s too bad they split because they would’ve complimented eachother so well ♥️ like if i didn’t know better i would’ve thought they’d have dated irl too (all due respect to his/blake’s past) “serena wants us to get along, but-but not like that, not like that, that would be sick *nervous laughter* they literally had the best buildup. and cheers to blair’s growth as a character 🥹 such a great complex character, leighton really was born to play blair. she truly had nate, chuck, dan, carter, the duke and a prince too? true IT girl of the show imho. “do you want me to hold your hand for support” reaches for hand & dan pulls away like “nOo”

Hated the last scene where writers made blair hate on dan who was her then date ,best friend after all they went through, ruining her character development and her comparing dan mistakes with chuck abuses and accepting chuck reasons is anything but stupid, Such a sad end to DAIR:(

Thank you for posting this, it’s been ages since I watched the show and definitely enjoy this couple so much back then, it took quite some time to build this relationship up but so few to tear them apart, they deserved better as a couple.

They are two brilliant and cunning persons who are too prideful and have a superiority complex and are extremely cynical and sarcastic. Still, when they get past their pride they can see how well they complement each other in wits, in humor, in interest, when you hear a conversation of them with another person there's always a difference, they handle themselves smarter and classier, but together they're each other equal.

Saw this video in my recommendations. Although I was more into Derena. Dair was something that never happened before in a teen romance show. It had calmness. In a way the relationship Dan and Blair had is what you want in real life. Communication, understanding and compassion. I think if the writers knew what they were doing and had control over the show. Dan and Blair could have been something magical. Maybe in an alternate reality, Gossip Girl with better writers could have handled this relationship far better than what we had.

Dan and Blair were magical no matter how little time they actually spent together as a couple. Their sneaking around as non-friends, to rivals at work, to being friends in public, to Blair leaning on Dan for life altering decisions, to Dan being there for Blair no matter what it was, to Dan finding the courage to let Blair know what would make him happy, to Blair admitting she had feelings for Dan, to Blair letting Dan know he had her heart. That was all magical. We just didn't get as much as we could have out of it.

I absolutely love Chuck and Blair but even I have to admit this was a superior couple. They were the enemies to lovers done right. They brought the best in each other.
