So a fun fact, No one can see Okarun transform unless they can see spirits, so it makes the scene funnier cause to the guy, Okarun's voice dropped a few octaves, and then used his gorilla grip strength to bring the guy down to eye level.

I already know wht the replies are gonna look like once I say it so thank god my notifications are off but if I’m being honest the only reason DanDaDan exists is because in Japan they’re allowed absolute creative freedom which ofc course comes with its downsides with hyper pervy shows but when people aren’t afraid that society will reject the entirety of their work over one aspect we get fun and passion filled projects like this The over policing of animated shows and what people think is acceptable is why western shows can get really bland and it takes rare gems like TOH or Gravity falls every couple of years instead of back to back masterpieces For the media illiterate, this isn’t me saying yes every perv should be allowed to throw their weird interests in their projects but the very western reaction of “omg no” to anything that makes you slightly uncomfortable is the reason Hollywood plays it so safe and we get reboot or sequels to tame and blind franchises instead of new and exciting stuff

Couple of things, it’s not slang kintama is just the word for testicals. It’s like the term “sea horse” it’s what it’s called, so you see a lot of literal horses from the see as a pun from that. You’re right about the gintama thing for everything except for the translation, it’s just gin (silver) instead of kin (gold) so it’s “silver balls”

Somehow I didn't even consider this episode to be horny until it was pointed out, wow, but I do think Dandadan's sexual themes exist for reasons beyond to be titillating or funny. It'll be expanded on a bit more as the show progresses but I DON'T think like, episode 1, was meant to be "hot" and we KNOW where the characters stand on it, it's Turbo Granny's whole deal. definitely agree about the perv factor. So many people have brought the bar for anime/manga so low. If the story isn't about actively having sex with someone's little sister they think it's not pervy at all but just because it's not the absolutely most degenerate thing out there doesn't mean there isn't fan service or it isn't made with a specific lens/gaze.

I think it's because of the language used too, not just the bar being low. "Perviness" is such a nebulous term compared to "this show employs the male gaze" or "if we look at this through any remotely feminist lens, scenes like this show disparities in the creator's priorities". I get that from like, a Reaction KZbinr perspective, the word "perviness" feels easier to say than more theory-based terms. But you get out what you put in. If your inputs are vague terms with no useful formal definitions or discourse, then your outputs (what your audience says) are going to tackle that vagueness more than they'll tackle the bigger picture. Even for me - I agree that the scenes pointed out are fanservice, are wild, are incongruent, are made with a male gaze, involve sexualization, are aspects of this anime that I could do without. But do I think they're "horny on main" or "pervy"? I don't know - those aren't terms I use enough or hear enough to have a rigorous sense of what I'm agreeing/disagreeing with.

So, you asked how we felt about the adaptation thus far, my thoughts as a manga reader are it's great, but I feel it stumbles just a bit. To touch on something you spoke about in this video, I feel the anime heightens the sexual nature of certain scenes more than then source material. To emphasize, a major theme of Dandadan is the exploitation of people and the discomfort of being oneself. For example, in episode one with the Serpo, they don't even view Momo as an item to use, they view her as a resource, to harvest and exploit for their own benefit. In the manga, this is conveyed well, as Momo's stripped form is far, far less sexualized. The anime has her boobs sticking out from her bra, and has a lot of trailing visuals on her body, where as in the manga, it didn't really have any panels with cleavage or anything of the sort. Aside from this, I legitimately have no notes. The animation, the acting, the pacing, it's all been excellent. I'm looking forward to future of this Anime.

Okay so, I won't try to make a big argument (EDIT: I did. But it's not really an argument, just an opinion. Hope people share their own cuz i'd like to hear it) because I love your reactions and you basically predicted what excuses people would use against your own critique/opinion, but I do believe that "pervy" humor is different from fan service. I really don't know how to make that sentence NOT sound creepy, but if it defends my case, I HEAVILY loathe fan service. I literally almost dropped MHA because of Mineta. And we don't even see him do anything physical most of the time, he just says or reacts to stuff. I believe fan service is not needed, and makes me extremely pissed off, especially when a show is well written, since it makes it difficult for me to praise the author. I strongly believe that Dandadan does not suffer from this issue. The same way I believe Chainsaw man does not suffer from this issue. Both of these shows tackle themes and topics, be it for humor or for actual storytelling, that are "pervy", and/or sexual. But they're done in a way where you won't go "Oh this author is a creep" or "Oh this author doesn't care about their female characters". I believe that both of these shows tackle this type of humor and these themes with care, and do manage to make them not feel "forced" in any way. They do not make underage girls with big breasts trip on characters. They do not make a laugh out of a female character's almost unappealing, oversized proportions. They do not have some comic relief perv who makes the most distasteful jokes known to man just for the sake of it. They follow sexual themes, and do have pervy humor, yes, but this does not make the show hard to watch because, again, it does not feel THROWN in your face, nor forced, and there are no distasteful jokes that just use women as clear objects for viewers to drool over. (The scene with the aliens was deffo uncomfortable, I'm not defending that, but I really do believe that it doesn't exist because the author is a creep or anything. Especially with how well written his female cast is. And yes, I will use the "it's supposed to make you uncomfortable" excuse, because I really do NOT think that scene was supposed to serve any fans, nor turn anyone on. If someone finds almost SA something meant to be appealing, that's on them. That is THEIR weird issue. And I do think the choking thing was NOT meant to emit perviness purposely.) I'm probably not getting my point across well because I suck at explaining but I hope people understand.

@@soup1118 About the first episode, it feels weird, because the anime added some shots that put a lot of focus on Momo's body that weren't present in the manga. Like, there is already a visual version of the story that doesn't include a close up on her body as she awakens her powers, so why was that needed in the anime? I think that a point that is often made is that of "why was that needed?", as maybe whatever the creator was trying to convey could've been done without a close to naked teenager. BUT I don't really have any fully formed position on that. Like, I can see a version of that scene, where the attempted rape is clearly conveyed without showing her body as much as it is, but what if her body being presented the way it is does actually fullfil a function on the scene and general themes? Like where does one draw the line between something being explicit for the sake of it, and when is the explicitness justified? Or can such a clear distinction even be done? Or does explicitness even requires a justification?

​@matiasmartinez1835 You make a fair point, and give very fair questions. So I have read the manga, and the adaptation is quite inconsistent with the more "sexual" scenes. Some can seem dragged, and some are shortened. What you're saying is valid, but I didn't even think about that since for me 1. It was still an SA scene so all I could feel was uncomfortable/disturbed. And 2. The fact that a shounen of this day and age didn't zoom into specifically a minor's breasts, nor did it make them abnormally big, was enough of a plus for me that I didn't really notice that they might've dragged it a little with the shots they gave. It's very fair to think that though and I do agree with your insight. Just feels so much more tame and misunderstood than any other shounen with ACTUAL, PURPOSELY ADDED fan service. Which is weird to say seeing how strange of a show Dandadan is. I might be glazing because I absolutely adore the writing of the whole manga, but I like to believe I'm giving my honest view.

@@soup1118 Oh, yeah, the SA scene it still very uncomfortable, it's just that those additions kinda stuck out to me, feeling slightly out of place. I also love the manga, and the apparent pervyness of it doesn't really affect my enjoyment of the story, aside from the occasional "was this needed?" (Class rep transformation for example). But I guess it sucks that because of that it ends up being a bit hard to recommend because some people get so put off by that, or some just entirely disregard it as "that pervy ass show" (as some people on this comment section do), when there is so much to enjoy in spite of said apparent pervyness. But regardless, I love the story, a lot of people seem to love it, can't wait for the rest to get adapted.

Fan service can work if its integrated into the story. Take Grey from Fairy Tail he strips all the time but not because of fan service but because it messes with his ice based devil slaying powers by throwing off his body temperature. Lucy as well due to some of her transformations due to her summoning magic activated by keys is based off the zodiac signs. And finally Erza some of her armor is purposely built fan serviceey but offer lots of advantages. Only one i can't agree with is her BDSM gear. And her being naked while while wearing Santa hat out in the snow in front of her crush.l that's another way to integrate fan service. Other than that theirs a lot of problems with Fairy Tail. I overlooked them since Fairy Tail appears to be based loosely off some form of DND with how it works with all the crazy shit.

@matiasmartinez1835 It's just the thing that stands out to me (if you can help me out here because I don't even know how to explain it well) is that people like MHA's author or Fire Force's author are difficult for me to praise because of the absolutely gross fan service they forcefully shove into the story, (and yes I have seen all of MHA and know how great it can get, i enjoyed it) but when it comes to people like Fujimoto or Tatsu (Dandadan's author) I don't believe they're creeps in the slightest, and thus it makes it so much easier for me to praise their brilliance, despite sexual themes and pervy scenes still present. I know why I can tell a significant difference between the way they integrate sexual themes and the way other mangaka do, I just can't quite put my finger on how to explain in a way where someone would understand.

There are so many ways to depict trauma, and anime and manga will choose bondage and kink imagery more times than they don't. How a creator _chooses_ to depict trauma is how we, as the audience, are given the information about how to feel about a certain scene and they kneecap themselves with this kinda shit *all the time.* I stopped watching anime full stop because of this shit. I recognize it against my will with fucking pattern recognition of all things from casual exposure to it, it's that prevalent.

Momo's phone got broken in the 1st episode, and she won't replace it for quite some time, which later in the manga kinda annoys her female friends; My friend hates Aira with passion, but I find her level of delulu to be hilarious, though I'm kind of watching out for signs of her becoming a character like Umbridge, who just are so incredibly frustrating in their defiance of logic - has not happened at the point in the manga that I'm reading, but you get the image. When it comes to Dandadan using a lot of "er*tic" images, I remember pausing the 1st episode during the alien abduction scene, when one alien positioned himself between Momo's legs (my friend and I started watching blindly with just general description fading out of the memory) and asking my friend "Is it a hentai? O_o", to which they replied "I have no freaking idea, but it could be"

uuuuuuuugh this dub again. I feel like they have tried a little too hard to make Momo use modern slang, and sometimes it just does not sound right, but more importantly... in Japanese, she and Okarun have a more similar level of harsh and/or chill. and it's to the point where I'm not even sure if their dynamic is being translated correctly. Okarun is still underconfident in assuming that he and Momo are friends, but the two genuinely want to hang out so badly that they're impatient throughout their entire school day. if any of their other tender moments had actually hit right prior to this, I think it'd be more clear why Okarun sees someone admirable when he looks at Momo. and Momo genuinely isn't the type to let someone's arbitrary social status get in the way of her actual opinion of them... all she knows is that she likes being around Okarun, so she's just as eager to get to know Okarun. (also we have Aira as a bit of a contrast point for this... she does put a lot of stock in people's arbitrary social status, and it makes her a huge jerk.) but what really makes Momo recoil from Okarun for the rest of the day, is the fact that her friends are teasing her, and taking it for granted that the two are already dating. even just their friendship is still very new... and if Okarun's assumption that she must've been waiting for someone else at the school gate was any indication, he's still a bit skittish. Momo actually likes him a lot, so this "joke" hits her a lot more awkwardly. plus she's trying to avoid the high school drama factor, but protesting this hard actually makes her priorities more obvious. Momo's friend even points it out... if Momo didn't have a crush on Okarun, she might've just leaned into the teasing and turned it into an in joke or something. she could brush it off if it didn't mean anything, but she doesn't _want_ it to not mean anything. she's taking it all seriously. meanwhile, Okarun is showing a bit of how socially unaware he is. all of this flies right over his head... he doesn't even seem to realize that befriending Momo makes him at least acquaintances with Momo's other friends by default, nor does he realize how much their opinions matter to Momo. but in truth, it's not that knowing Okarun is embarrassing... it's that Momo might actually kind of want to date Okarun, but having it happen like this would be way too soon. Momo doesn't want to make a joke out of this... but Okarun is also used to getting bullied, and he might even have a blind spot toward the idea that Momo might actually seriously like him. I love this dynamic when it's portrayed right, because it's clear that both of them earnestly care about each other... they're just in high school, and aren't good at showing how they feel.
