I have always said, that's why they call them accidents. Nobody ever plans an accident but human error is just that. I think everyone needs to hear your story. God love you and your beautiful family. I’m a disabled vet. I’m not paralyzed but I had a spinal cord injury in 1980. Doing sit-ups of all things. There are no wheelchairs or pain in heaven. Soon. I have been doing residential construction for over 30 years . I went into business for myself in 2007 and since that I have the ability to walk away from costumer’s that want to rush and cause unsafe conditions and have walked away a few times . Much respect to you brother for punching that day in the face.

My father was a carpenter and he fell from a house beam wheelborring concrete ...back then they didn't use scaffolding laws...he broke his back and spent a year in hospital and then had to wear a full body brace and used crutches....his case took 10years right through to the High Court and won his case bought in new regulations for all building sites to use scaffolding! A big change for construction in Australia 🇦🇺

Good job brother I know it wasn’t easy talking about it. You did 👍 man. Thank you for the words of encouragement and everything you said about safety I’m an Iron Worker from Minnesota and just started working with a friend of mine who started his own decking company laying the metal Sheets before they roof it. I’m 42 and is he and we’ve been doing this for years. I feel like there is a reason I heard this today. My boss\ friend and me as well have been cutting corners not tying off cause obviously you know slows you down and can be a hassle. Our job requires to be tied off over 25 ft we’re at around 40 so we use the retractables and maybe put two three screws in which we know will not hold if needed but putting production ahead of safety. I really appreciate you. Moving forward I am going to make sure I do what is needed to keep me safe weather he likes it or not thanks again.

He should be held accountable for all your hospital bills, rehabilitation, pay you for the work you did and much more. This accident you had was his fault for not listening to you telling him he did not have the right equipment and man power to do the job correctly and safely. You have a beautiful loving family. As for that homeowner who totally disregarded what tragedy he had caused you and your girls, he'll get his just deserts. You continue to inspire me with your strength of character and courage. Watched this vid uninterrupted tonight. Your audience was very respectful and gave you their attention. Was hard for me to hear you at the moment you went into your experience in the hospital w/being taken care of for the first time since being a grown man. I heard from you how hard it was to tell the story. The pictures you inserted into the vid just seemed to work! Especially those of your "post" injury body. Had to "slide left" a few times to admire those! FORGIVE me Andrea! Love your delivery and how your voice is always so calming. I mean, when video panned the crowd, nobody was seen on their phones, having side conversations, etc., they gave you respect and undivided attention. Wish I could've been there to hear it and meet y'all. Someone there was blessed hearing your story! Love you Dan Kotter and family!

Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me--put it into practice. Philippians 4:8 God bless and daily strengthen you Dan, in your daily walk with Him. This verse always has given me strength when I would start to think negatively or get down. I would think about this verse and think of something good instead, and all the negative thoughts would leave me. God’s Holy Word truly has power. 💕

WELL DONE! its hard to get up in front of a crowd. I was and ironworker for 33 years a young appentice desided to swing the high reach that i was standing on bolting up the building and down i went 2 storys it the secound time in my carrior i fell 2 storys, im can walk but had to learn how to again, im still having sugerys from 2012 it happened, getting ready for hip surgery, but im strong and riding motor cycle 3 wheeler and boating still remolding my home i was punche d in the face now i live on dissably ssi which sucks, thank god for my wife having a ok job we get by, my union did nothing for me there not the same as they used to be, thank you for ur story eep on punching brother.

I think it all really sank in to the crowd when you asked them to stand up...and they stood there silent...all the while looking at Dan...that made them really realize where you were at...you can't just stand up, and like you said...in a split second your life can change forever with NO warning. Amazing totally amazing. Dan you overcame your anxiety of public speaking to deliver a very vital message. The audience you held completely with your calm voice& sheer ability to show your human just like them. With all the parts of how you were before your accident, your different jobs, your gym regime & generally being somebody who thought he could handle himself& take life on the chin. Those people were listening intently to all you had to say & I'm sure they will remember your valuable lesson because it was delivered by somebody whose life changed in a split second& has lived to tell the story. You have not been an annoying boss shouting orders at them or trying to get more done by shortcutting safety measures. You have been a regular dude telling them, no reminding them that safety is a choice to be able to live& that gut instinct should never be ignored. It took a lot of guts to do that talk&to discuss your accident even with the support of Andrea&the children being there with you. I am bursting with so many emotions after watching this video but OMG it was worth it. I truly hope that there are contractors, big companies & safety groups who will benefit from having you on board to not only talk about safety issues but also to talk to employees. There's also all of those who find your social media outlets whose lives you have helped by giving as much info as you do, along with all the times you all lift peoples spirits with the normality of family life&beautiful image's of the smiling children. I hope you all realise that your social media family appreciate all that you do. Very many blessings to you all Kotter crew.

I would hope more companies have you speak. Although female, I was a flooring installer for 30 years but being female I followed instinct more and took flack for it. Attended many of safety courses but none impacted the group like what I saw in this video. Picture like a thousand words mentality! To here you so open, honest and humble has more of an impact on all that testosterone in that audience and I know you will have saved a few from a terrible injury! It is always said things happen for a reason and you just may have found yours ( of course have to include Andrea and kids)!

The look of admiration and respect from each and every person at your talk says it all. You said it all so openly from going against that vile little jump start, how he couldn’t visit shows he knew it was his fault but gutless and to not even pay you!!!!! Shocking. I’m not religious but karma will find him one day, to how you believed you’d walk out of hospital and how despite the devastation you became a better man.

@@BJ2020_ sadly I doubt he did. To be so disgusting as to not even apologise or visit or even pay for work done, I’d put money on the fact that he’d of said that Dan was up there by choice and knew there’s always a risk and not that he literally bullied him into it and he had also brought in what I imagine was young unqualified workers so from that moment it just became one big s***show! He obviously wanted everything done on the cheap and sadly meant a good man, a top worker who prided himself on his work and was known for his outstanding work, that day lost a life that was to the life that is now. That said through it all Dan says that he’s become a better person. I don’t know about in the states but here in UK you can’t walk into any site now to do work without a CSCS card for whatever job you do within the trade. I sure hope that karma finds that horrible little man. To have insurance involved? I imagine, would of bankrupted him which he fully deserves and when compared to a life changing incident he’d of got of likely with just bankruptcy. A lot of good came out of it with Dan and family just a shame it took that for his life to become what it is today but I love that there is no self pitying or woo is me. He did all that and made the decision to put his children first and then things just started to fall into place. One thing that made me laugh was when he was talking about coming round and mum, dad etc then soon to be ex wife and his girlfriend. Just made me laugh you have to find the humour where ever you can in those dark times xx

When I was at the ICU with my baby brother (16 yrs younger than me) a man came in who had fallen from less than 20 feet. No tie offs nothing. He had working on a roof. He is a total vegetable. Can't speak, only screams in his dreams every night. He landed on his head. Please, everyone wear your safety harnesses and tie off no matter how short the distance is. Your life and the ones who love you will all suffer if you don't.

I know what Lagoon is. I lived in Salt Lake for a short while. About a year and a half. We were pretty adventurous. We went everywhere from Moab to Tooele to Bear Lake to Strawberry and everywhere in between. Loved it.

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm learning from your videos that "perfect" gets in the way of just getting out there and doing something! I love that you both keep things raw and real... Kids wandering around, hearing the baby babble in the background, etc... I'm learning to just get going, set a goal, don't be afraid to look a little awkward, and to try, try, try again. Thank you for modeling determination and grit, as well as humility and gratitude. You all inspire me! (I have a chronic pain condition that is very challenging.) Your life is a sermon and teaches me to never give up, and don't accept perceived limitations. If I can't go "through" something... Go around, above, or under. Just don't accept "can't" for an answer. God Bless.💕

It’s so interesting how Dan describes how he was before the accident as his facial expressions are so very different in the photos of him showing off his muscles compared to his expression and demeanour in recent videos. There’s a cockiness and hardness in his face in the photos, which I see no trace of now. I just see kindness, joy and love (and sadly, gut wrenching pain) in his beautiful face. He’s FAR more attractive now 😉 It’s shameful the guy didn’t visit you or even pay you for the work you had already done. I hope his insurance covered Dan’s medical & rehab costs.
