When I was in high school junior year I went to Dan Hicks his house he knew me from around Mill valley from playing music. He served as both milk glass full of whiskey. Then he played as a tape of him and Mary Ann price having fun in bed. My friend fell over the railing of the front porch and woke up in the bushes the next day. I live down the street so I made it home. Dan was the Don rickles of music around Marin county. Rest in peace

RIP, Dan. I remember this episode of Sunday Night and still have it recorded on a VHS tape someplace. So smooth and laid back and groovy.

I saw Dan at the Paramount Theater in Austin when he let Mary Ann Price talk him into a reunion of all the original band members for one night only and around twenty years ago. I was in row 8 center in a packed house for the best concert experience of my entire life and I've had many hundreds before and since.

A perfect performance of a great song. I've seen him live twice, each was a brilliant show. Dan is the consummate live performer.

If Django, Bob Wills and John Prine had started a band, it might have come close to sounding like this. Brilliant.

Maybe because Dan's obviously high on dope, and that's the secondary meaning of the lyric?

I saw Dan Hicks at the Gardens in Vancouver (?) a long time ago when he and his hot licks opened for the small faces. Dan et al were not too well received but I was totally taken. To this day and beyond what a great act..

they played more than two songs on this show, as is the case for virtually all bands that play on ACL. i know "Willie" was one, "The Magician" another, also "Barstool Boogie." in fact, i recall most of the songs from the "Shootin' Straight" CD being performed.

@FlippyFloppinator Ten months and no comment, so it's about time, huh? No background singers? What? Dan Hicks without his Lickettes? That's part of his persona. But, hey, at least you're watching.
@KNW000113 жыл бұрын
I didn't miss the singers. I forgot about 'em. That's sayin' a lot because I like the Licks. Hicks is no hick.That smooth croonin' irony. Steely Dan, meet Cheeky Dan.

This isn't from ACL. By the way, I have some ACL footage of various folks (not including Dan, however) and I asked ACL if I could upload it some of it. They said no. If they won't release the material themselves I don't know what their problem is with me putting up some low-resolution videos, but they have better lawyers than I do so who am I to argue?
@GitarCarl12 жыл бұрын
@Nthrwrld Thanks for the info on the group name. I don't know about the Hot Licks, but I recall the AW played two songs on this show. This song I thought was fantastic, and I didn't like the other one at all...
@ElChupacabra77B8 жыл бұрын
He looks and sounds like Kevin Costner! Kevin should play him in a movie :)
@Nthrwrld12 жыл бұрын
This apparently is Dan's Acoustic Warriors group, not the Hot Licks. I hadn't seen them before, and I won't mind if I don't see them again. Dan's very first Hot Licks group was the best of all. He needs the whole act around him to make his show, not just a rhythm section behind his vocals.
@RonWylie-gk5lc5 жыл бұрын
They were brilliant?, all the different people who played with him were great
@FlippyFloppinator15 жыл бұрын
it would be better if it was faster; and if there was no background singers. i'm going to get alot of hate from this comment.... assuming people watch the video. :)
