Wow...more than 4 million hits - this makes me smile since I have been following these guys for a long time (I wrote about them when they were just getting on the circuit for an online zine). I remember seeing them play at Cafe de Nord in San Francisco, the show wasn't sold out (amazingly) and I totally geeked out when I met them :)

how does the "thou shalt not idolize musicians" bit work out with the "thou shalt not take [bunch of legendary musician's names] in vain" bit? am i confused or is he?
@steviehair019 жыл бұрын
+nouseforafknname I think that he's deliberately putting in contradictory arguments. The whole point of the song (to me at least) is "think for yourself, don't just follow other people." And other people includes himself. Hence he puts in contradictory advice, just so you can't just follow him. You have to think for yourself a little bit, and maybe, just maybe, that will get the process going.
@KingKook9 жыл бұрын
+nouseforafknname Belittling those that are more creative or more praised or more successful is how unimaginative, mediocre minds attempt to elevate themselves. Trashing those BIG NAME musicians is kind of a lazy sport for half wits who denigrate the things which intimidate them. Not taking their name in vain is not the same as making idols of them, and while no one should be exempt from criticism it's stupid and worthless to piss on those sorts of people and things which are attempting to bring genuine beauty and meaning and even joy into people's lives, as opposed to the crass commercialized shit which inundates us daily. Rather than actually producing excellent art themselves some people instead choose to take the names of those great musical artists "in vain." The End.
@alexbrook80338 жыл бұрын
+nouseforafknname Just because one appreciates a legendary musician like say Jim Morrison, does not mean they are making an idol out of that person. To idolise would mean to elevate Jim to a God like status. To not take in vain simply means to appreciate the work of Jim. Ie you are not idolising Jim as a person, just appreciating what he as a musician created.

"Don't follow Lost Prophets"...... "Thou shall not think any male over the age of 30 that plays with a child that is not their own is a paedophile,some people are just nice" Errrm slightly uneasily prophetic these lyrics considering the admittance in recent days about the sexual crimes on children by Ian Watkins from Lost Prophets.

Thou shalt not listen to a middle class bearded gentrifier of Hip Hop culture about what is and isn't Hip-Hop, whether or not said beard was grown before beards became cool. Thou shalt not listen to said middle class bearded gentrifier's admonishment of working class mannerisms and slang. Thou shalt read Owen Jones' 'Chavs' to understand why. Thou shalt always question Stephen Fry, who isn't at all a 'national treasure' but instead a mediocre actor and quiz show host who everybody thinks is cleverer than he is because he quips half-truths and badly researched one-liners in a posh accent.

@RAAWRimmaPANDA I think that line comes after the "think for yourself" line for a reason. It's meant to get you thinking and not just agreeing with everything he says. Also notice he is a politician on tv when he says it, and then the him on the couch decides to turn off the tv and walk away (thinking for himself).
