If Dan Marino's 1984, 1985, 1986 stats were pro-rated to today's averages, it works out to 6,800 yards and 64 touchdowns per season. THAT is how far ahead of everyone he was during that time. He was throwing for 2018 type stats in an era where the averages were 3,400 yards and 22 tds for the leaders. If you took the worst 16 game QB stats of 2018 and gave to them to someone in 1985... they would have been a Hall of Famer. The game has drastically changed.

If I remember correctly, the pass rushers were allowed three steps before hitting the QB after the ball was thrown in Marino's era. This means the quarterbacks could legally get the snot knocked out of them after they threw the ball. There was definitely no football move rule. The second a receiver touched the ball, he was fair game to get murdered by a safety or linebacker. They weren't walked off the field by a ref if they showed signs of a concussion. If the receivers were conscious, they went back to the huddle and tried to make sense of the play being called, then lined up to do it again. If people in this era are getting over 5,000 yards on a regular basis, I agree with Dan's exaggeration on his numbers. He would have thrown for 6,000 yards in a season if he played with Duper and Clayton in 2019.

Amen! That's the key: they have to playwith constant fear, to be hit, hard, hard, hard, any time you passed the ball (no thrown away allowed in those times)... the FEAR Factor, to be destroyed, is gone, it's impossible to compare today's player to the past, because you just cannot quantify the fear factor, how much you were able to susstain hit after ht and still scan the fiedl, not being scared, not having happy feet, not coing too fast throug your progressions.. That' why Marino, Montana were shadow of their former self, phisically, at 32-33 year old, while now they can play even at 40! Tha's why I think it's just useless to compare them to todays qb: for the QB is a totally different game, you could'nt thrown away any pass (if it was a pass, you know you're gonna be hit, hard, no matter what), you could hit the qb everywhere (under the kneed, his head, arm, every body part was actually fair game)

He never had a defense or a running game to protect him. A lot of his 147 wins were scores like 38-35. He lost a lot of games where the offense put up 5 touchdowns. He never had a 1,000 yard rusher the whole time he played. The defenses knew he was going to throw 35 or 40 times and still couldn't stop him. If he would have had a defense and a running game, he would have won multiple Super Bowls, not just one or two.

That play was always counted the same. What are you saying? Unitas could throw a 5 yard curl to John Mackey and he could break 4 tackles and go 70 for a td and it would be counted as such. How often did we see Montana complete 7 yard slants and 5 yard outs than Rice/Taylor turned into 60/70/80/90 yards touchdowns? Plenty..

That 1990-91 KC season was a career best for DeBerg as I recall. Very few ints. Not to mention the later half of the season he played with a broken finger on his left hand. Lowry's long FG attempt came up just short in that final playoff game.

They didn't have a radio in their helmets, the QBs got hit late constantly, the receivers were mauled running routes and destroyed after the catch, and, something people don't realize, they didn't have free agency back then. Acquiring players to build a team wasn't as easy as it is today. Yeah, it's easier being a QB now.

In 86, Marino threw for 44 td's. The Dolphins were 8-8. That's how bad the Phins were. Imagine what their record would have been without him? Shula was blinded by Dan's talent and his drafts were awful in Dan's prime. The defensive coaching was awful. You throw for 44td's today -- you at least make the playoffs!

I recall Randall winning four consecutive distance throws in the NFL Quarterback Challenges with Marino, Elway, Young, Favre, Kelly, Esiason, Bledsoe, etc. competing. Every great passer should be able to play good enough to help his team win at least 1 S.B. Best example-Kurt Warner. His defense gave up 37 pts. in that 1st po game in '99 and his backs only had 30 yds. or so. But Warner's passing won it.

Kurt Warner had 5 TD passes and led his team to a 49-37 win in that 1st po game in '99. Overall his backs had only 101 yds. rushing in those 3 po games in '99 but Warner threw for over 1,000 yds.

Elway had better teams than Marino. Marino only had recievers Clayton and Duper for a brief time. He never had a good offensive line to protect him. He never had a good running back and the defensive line wasn't good much. Despite that look at all the passing records he held. Dan Marino-the only QB in history that came into the league with the "perfect formula for success" in '83. Drafted by a S.B. team, No.1 in Defense and his backs had OVER 2,000 yds. rushing. Dan had the best coach in the league and he himself was in his prime ('83 thru '87).

The best examples are games vs. the Bills in '90, '92, and '95. Marino's playoff games each year were the worst of all 3 games played each year vs. the Bills. But the very best example is vs. the Broncos in '98. Dan led his offense to 31 pts. in the Reg. Season game and only 3 pts. in the po game.
