As I watch back the '98 WWF season, I really enjoy Dan Severn's appearances and it's actually refreshing that he is a straight forward, no frills guy. +Jumbo Gincredible You're right, about what could have been, but Severn wasn't stupid. There are far too many people, who take pro wrestling far too seriously. I'm not sure it would have harmed his business interests, but his family may have suffered to some degree. He has his own ethical code & that was just overstepping the mark. In the long run, he definitely made the right decision.

Of course the hazards are real, but that doesn't mean it should be taken seriously. If it was a true sport (an unknown final result), then I would. Even under contract, to the WWE, or any other organisation, performers need to know where to draw the line (storylines etc). If it's outside your comfort zone, then don't do it. Some performers, Mick Foley for example, don't seem to have in-ring limits, but even he would probably have refused to get involved with some of the angles.

I can't believe how much the WWE overthought Dan Severn. They stumbled on his perfect use the first time they used him: A quiet muscle-for-hire guy who would look mildly offended if you made him rustle his tie because he had to dispose of you (he only "rustled" it because it was so little effort to dispose of you). He didn't need to talk and he didn't need to wrestle that often. His legitimacy was evident.

Wow that’s extremely shitty that WWF would actually threaten him like that. “ do the stupid Satan can’t make or else.” But that’s the mentality of all the Vince McMahon flunkies who aren’t brave enough to be men on their own feet like Bruce Prichard and Kevin done. They are so lost in delusion that they think Vince McMahon is some sort of God and he can do whatever he wants. I love how he had to remind the road agent he was probably one of the flunkies that it doesn’t matter how you want to book Dan Severn, the fact of the matter is if Dan Severn wanted to he could go in that ring and beat the ever living hell out of the undertaker or Steve Austin and it just doesn’t matter what you booked.

I always felt the argument that he was too no frills with his gimmick and not flashy enough was crap from guys like Vince Russo, because Goldberg didn't have a gimmick either. Nor did Brock Lesnar. And neither of those guys were great orators. Still, I always felt that Dan Severn was hard to book because you needed a 10 minute match, and Severn's style was 5 minutes interesting at most to your average fan. His real fighting style of straight wrestling was amazing in the real fighting ring, but didn't translate well to any kind of a WWE main event, where you would have needed him to go 15 or 20 minutes. He needed to to take a few of his moves and flash them up a little. He should have also been kept a heel and consistently put in with smaller faces. Basically it could have been like Mountain vs Viper or something, where the faces dance around and stay away from Dan, getting shots in with the buildup being to Dan finally catching them. You could have doubled his entertainment value on that alone.

Oh shit, I always wondered why WWF dropped him, he could've been a real life Goldberg or a guy like Kurt Angle, he came in during the wrong part of the Attitude era. He should've been around during the 2000 - 2001 period.

I totally understand why Dan had issues with that storyline pitch, but that mark of the beast idea sounds badass especially for that time period.

Imagine if this actually happened though. It's Royal Rumble and Dan just clears out everybody on his own, waiting 90 seconds for the "fresh meat". Then the producers go ballistic and break the rules, sending out everybody at once just to stop Dan. lol

Who here thinks that Dan wouldn't clear out that ring with ease? Nobody! Regardless, I think I could take Serven... Hold my beer..
