Surrounded by bright happy shows, Dan Vs was not only dark, but managed to pull it off. Underappreciated in its time, Dan Vs was something special. Let's take a look.

I personally think that the fights between Dan and Elise are SO intense, because they both are the same side of the coin! They both are High Voltage, but opposite polarities. Like a "short circuit", when they are together. And in some episodes, they act in common ways, or work towards the same goal - for their own reasons, but TOGETHER. One of those episodes is New Mexico. AND I think that Dan cares a lot about his friends, in a strange (his own) way. A good example for this is the Shakespeare's Theatre restaurant, if I remember the name right...

Not to mention that the Hub was a network owned by Hasbro. Dan Vs. was basically the only series that wasn't promoting a toyline. They had nothing to lose or gain with the show in that sense. Transformers, MLP, G.I. Joe Renegades, even though they screwed that one too, the toy sales propped those series up.

I think another reason why dan works as a jerk character is because he never goes after anyone unwarranted he is in some way wronged first. Also another example of great jerk characters is Carl and master shake from Aqua Teen Hunger Force because of how ridiculous the scenarios/characters in question are there antics never come off as mean spirited or annoying to the audience

I remember actively boycotting The Hub in its time, admittedly for a very trivial reason. The channel used to be called Discovery Kids, and while it didn't get the same attention as the bigger kids' channels like Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network, there were a lot of shows on it that I really loved. Often times they were educational, but didn't shove it in your face like something you'd see on Nick Jr. So naturally I was disappointed when the network changed direction and basically became "The Hasbro Channel". I know not all of their shows were product placements, but considering I was *very* annoyed seeing MLP everywhere and the only other Hub show I'd seen was SheZow (which I do actively despise), I wanted nothing to do with this network. It's a shame my teenage angst at the time unknowingly led me away from a good show.

I love the way conversations in the show don't just stop at a punchline, they pester out natural and the humor comes from the absurd premise of the conversation being executed so naturally. It's honestly kind of like novel dialogue. I also think two of the reasons Dan works so well as a character is that A. He's a very confusing and complicated person we want to know more about, for example, why does he have extensive knowledge on very specific topics while being ignorant of broad information? What is it he likes about Chris? Why is he so angry? and B. He is shown to be legitimately miserable, and pitiable, which makes him come off as more pathetic than malicious.

I'd love to see it back, at least for a movie or something. While I love the show, I keep seeing fans who say "it should be on adult swim". I personally disagree. I think the show works best with it's rated E For Everyone approach that hides in a bit of darker/adult humor, as I honestly don't think it being as rude or out there as let's say South Park, Family Guy, or Rick and Morty would do it any favors (reminder of how awkward Ren and Stimpy's adult version was, imo). If anything a more adult oriented version would be funnier if only it was using the rating as an excuse to be more violent or something. Great video btw, can't wait to see the "vs the network", considering that seems to clearly be the case judging by what the creator, aka the real dan, has said about it on social media.

I agree. I love the level of creative insults and obscure references that were way more memorable than just "damn" or "the 'F'-word" over and over. The entirety of 'Dan Vs Ye Old Shakespeare Dinner Theatre' highlights this. "The Fancy Restaurant" as well, on the reference side of it. It's really fun and more personal than generic swearing.

Growing up with Dan Vs. was great, my heart totally shattered when they canned it. I seriously always forgot what the Network was called because I only watched The Hub for Dan, then the ads with Pinkie and Dan next to each other would pop up as a reminder. I will never get why people don't like Elise either, I see her as this perfect other side to the insane character spectrum that is this show. Chris is the perfect middle man he exist in the world of normal and wants it to stay as such, he is kind and nice but shows exactly why being TOO nice is not a good thing from how he lets Dan treats him. Dan also exist in the world of normal, but through his own boredom, anger, and outrage wants it to be more than sometimes what it actually is, mainly to justify his own rage. And Elise exist in the world of abnormal, from her extremely pressured child hood, overbearing parents who one of which works for the mob, her perfect ex who her parents always brings, and the fact that she is a spy for a Shadow government organization. All she wants is normality, and serves as the perfect back bone foil to Dan that Chris can't really be and tell him no when he goes too far, because she knows what exactly is too far. Honestly without Elise and her character the show wouldn't be the same.
@UnkownUnkown0111 ай бұрын
even though, as much as Dan might treat Chris like shit, deep down he cares a lot about him, even if it doesn't seem so, but if it doesn't seem so it's because he doesn't know how to make it seem so. Take the magician episode for example, Chris and Dan stumbled upon a magician's show, and Magnifico (the magician that was performing) needed a volunteer for his next trick so he chooses Chris, whom was among the audience and was holding a necklace that was supposed to be a gift for Elise, Magnifico made the necklace "disappear" and he was supposedly unable to get it back, Dan of course knew it was all pure balooney so he stands up for Chris and Magnifico takes his underwear and Dan went on the entire episode to prove that magic was a scam and to get back Chris' necklace. Dan might not give a crap about Chris' wife but nobody better steal from Chris if it takes away his happiness. There are a lot of more moments I can mention where it is clear that Dan cares about Chris but I'll leave it here. PS: I know you probably didn't need a detailed explanation of what happened in that episode since you have most likely watched it, but I just put it out there for other people that didn't watch the entire show

A thing to note about Dan is 9 times out of 10 his Revenge is justified. Look at all the stuff that happens to his Car. Wolfman scratches it unprovoked, George Washington's ghost chops a tree down onto it, A dude named Art uses it as Art, Beach goers crash into it for no reason, a dinosaur breaks it again for no reason, A baseball breaks his mirror and a superhero destroys it... He's justified in all these cases for wanting revenge. But there's always an outlier like when he accidentally left his car in a donation spot and it gets taken, that was on him but even so its on them as well because I'm sure there has to be some paperwork involved to legally donate a car and without a title change the Car is still Dan's property so at max he's half at fault for it. Dan is relatable because he just wants to live life and be his own person the way we all do and Life unfortunately can't leave him alone and I can relate to that because that's what I want. I would literally be Dan if I wasn't afraid of Prison 😂
@UnkownUnkown0111 ай бұрын
Same, I (and probably everybody) relate to Dan on a spiritual level lol, there are so many things that bother me in my daily life that I have never asked for to show up and ruin my day and that I wish I could just shout their name into the sky and then get revenge on them without going to prison. If prison wasn't a problem for me I'd probably be also getting revenge on everything that wronged/bothered me everyday
