Dana White doesn't mince words, and he definitely doesn't hold back when talking about pirating.

The PPV is way too much money. 60 dollars is ridiculous. It's funny, because if they were 20 dollars, I would buy every single ppv. Now I will NOT buy any. I'll just find them on a website, after they come out. There's 12-15 ppvs a year? You can make an easy 240-300 dollars off me. Since they're 60 dollars now, you'll make zero off me.

B9King937 Your opinion does not represent the entire population of the UFC's viewer base, so don't be surprised if their PPV are over/under your desired buy range.
@B9King937
@B9King937 8 жыл бұрын
TheGreatslyfer I think a lot of people would agree it's a bit over priced. If they were 20, soooo much more people would buy it. I know too many people who don't buy ufc PPV because it's too much money. If it were cheaper, they most certainly would. A lot of people go to diners just to see it because it's cheaper for them. But those people would just buy it on their own if it were cheaper.
@TheGreatslyfer
@TheGreatslyfer 8 жыл бұрын
B9King937 I agree with your assumption although we need numbers and research to make a good estimate on the optimal price range for PPV. I personally think 40 bucks is a good deal, it's like maybe going to the stadium or so, but 20 is way too little to make a profit even when considering the increased number of purchases. Think the marketing department at UFC has got it down so don't worry about it hehe. Just watch online streams.

Sharing is caring, not stealing. To steal means you deprive someone of something. If you "pirate" you are not depriving anyone of anything. Before you say you are taking their profits, you have to prove that the people who are sharing would have bought UFC if they couldn't download it. This is provably wrong when you consider all the poor people who wouldn't watch it otherwise.

Tirpak Magyar You, sir, are an idiot. You are basically trying to construct an argument that stealing is okay when it is done in order to provide the stolen goods to someone else (Robin Hood kind of way), yet your conclusions doesn't necessarily follow from this premise. I am arguing that sharing data over the internet with fellow citizens of the world cannot by definition be called theft since theft must necessarily deprive someone of something. So whilst you are trying to argue that stealing is justified in cases you deem justifiable (idiotic in itself), I am claiming no theft is being done. Try to keep up. Second, this whole diatribe against poor people just solidifies my opinion that you are a fool with no hope of becoming any smarter than a turnip. You don't have to be unemployed to be poor. Many people work very hard and still remain poor. Lastly, not surprisingly, you lack any comprehension of how an economy works. I don't know who you work for, but if they find out how dumb you are they are sure to fire you. Nothing is worth more than what people will pay for it. That is how prices work. X makes a product, and Z tells X how much he will pay for it. If the price is less than the cost of production it's not worth making. So if no one is willing to pay for your crappy album, movie, or what have you, then it's not worth anything in terms of money. Now the way our market works, some people are willing to pay, some people aren't. The average is the worth of the product.

I live in europe, and I would like to see the UFC events too, but those take place when I'm sleeping in the middle of the fcking night. How am I supposed to watch UFC if it weren't for sites posting the fights for free?? It's really difficult to find info on the UFC website how I can watch UFC in my counrty (Belgium) live when I'm up for it to stay awake. AND look at the bright side, a lot more people get access to mma via these websites, thus making the UFC more well known.

Actually, the internet saved the music industry (for musicians) and there is plenty of evidence. That doesn't condone piracy, but seriously the PPVs are sometimes too expensive for mediocre fights.

I think a large portion of viewers legitimately cannot afford the PPVs. Even if I could afford one PPV every 6 months what of the down time in between? How would I be able to develop a connection/relationship with any of the fighters if I only saw KZbin highlights? Moreover, I wager that a large portion of the UFC demographic are young, male fighters or athletes - most of whom can't afford UFC PPVs on top of their training expenses, etc. The point is, unless it is a superfight card the motivation to collaborate with others or to save up for the PPV is not there for most. I think Dana could cultivate future fans by stating something like this, "Well, if you're a young teenager, a college student, or simply broke, do what you have to do. The UFC wants everybody to enjoy and see how amazing this sport is, and if certain fans don't have the money hopefully one day they will." Or you know he could lower the price per view to like, I don't know 15-20 bucks. Pirating is not going anywhere; it would be wise of him to cater to millennials because we are the future as of the UFC. -My two cents.

You gotta remember this is a sport about finishing the fight. Condit stepped into the ring without any desire to do so. There's a very large difference between using footwork to move in and out compared to running away. In Pride the judges had more of an emphasis on who was controlling the fight, who did more damage, and who was closer to finishing the fight. In all those cases the answer was Diaz, with the only time the fight came close to ending being his submission attempt in the 5th.

Is computer code just a concept, despite the fact that a program is written in code, and the code has to physically exist before the computer can run the program? Why does computer code exist in the program that it makes up? Why does the concept for the house exist in the blueprint? If these things physically exist, then why are the concepts for IP rights not existing in the legal documents (ie, IP laws) they are written in?

Ufc is dope. The music industry did not care about the consumers. I once heard a story of how best buy wanted to sale cds for a couple dollars to get people into their store to get them to look at the appliances. But the music industry said they would not allow that and set their price, that was much more than best buys idea of what make a good business decision.

But they should make a way for people to get this streaming, like a year contract or something. When I am abroad, forget about it. I tried to log on and purchase some kind of thing and it wouldn't load "in my region." So, there are bars around that show the fights (and you can be sure that most of them don't pay), but they should really do a season ticket...more than what he is talking about here.

They technically get paid by advertisers to put the shows on. That's why some fighters complain about advertising; certain companies having exclusive rights to advertise means that other rivals can't sponsor fighters or teams (technically, they can sponsor them, but don't get to put their ads on the fighter's hat or team's banner). A similar situation happened with the Football World Cup, where Dutch fans couldn't go in wearing clothes with the Bavaria beer logo on them.

It depends exactly which business. For the majority of the entertainment industry, they are doing rather well; some say in spite of piracy, some say because of piracy. If you look into copyright laws, when you buy a CD you are paying for a license for your personal use; if you lend it to a friend you are in breach of this license (ie, breaking the same law pirates are breaking, illegal distribution). If your friend likes the CD, they might buy their next album. Torrents are practically the same.

If someone managed to erase the data from the department of justice that doesn't annul the constitution. If someone has 2 copies of the constitution does the holder of that document entitle him to challenge the other persons document as a fraud? How can that happen if 2 now exist in physical form when 1 item can't exist in 2 different locations at once? How do you explain any of this without abandoning your position that a concept becomes reality merely by jotting the idea on scrap paper? Trolo

Yes, that's the Record Rental Amendment of 1984. Which, as I said, actually does not prohibit casually renting out your CDs to a friend. It only prohibits such lending done for a profit. E.g.: "Hey man, you borrow it for $5." That makes sense, as chances are someone's only going to pay to "borrow" a CD if they plan to burn it. As to your question, lending a CD displaces a tangible object, such that only one person can use it at a time. Pirating subverts the whole need for the CD or legal d/l.

The reason why the fights have market of pirates is due to the cost of watching the events. The UFC is not yet main stream and the PPV model has held the sport behind because of this. In the short term money will appear to be good but the lost long term exposure to the sport is damaging. There is a reason why the super bowl is so popular and this applies to the Olympics and the soccer world cup. The UFC do not seem to understand this.

Look up the first-sale doctrine of American law: "[This] doctrine enables the distribution chain of copyrighted products, library lending, gifting, video rentals and secondary markets for copyrighted works (for example, enabling individuals to sell their legally purchased books or CDs to others)." There is an exception that prohibits an owner of a musical record from renting it out, but it applies ONLY when done for direct or indirect commercial advantage. So don't charge your friends.

it boils down to this.. if people can't afford it(for whatever reason, i.e health, unemployment etc) they can't pay for it, so are therefore not stealing anything as their money was never there to begin with. saying people cant watch something because they haven't got the money is ridiculous. its money that was never going to get spent anyway so how can you be losing something that never was? simply put, you can't. money really is the route of all the worlds problems and dana just proved it here

What was like before the Ipod was, that you had to buy a whole damn CD for the one good song that particular artist had; The costumer got ripped of like that. I would have never payed $15+ for a Walk Off The Eart CD, but i did pay $1 for the Someone I Used To Know single. If you are a good artis, act or whatever you make your money from live performances anyways. Maybe they should have the option to buy the UFC events as single fights.

In your situation, I think it's understandable. On the other hand, Dana has a point; fighters need to get paid as do trainers, organisers, venue owners, Dana himself, the Fertitta brothers etc. I think their should be something worked out where the UFC (or ANY organisation/business) can earn money without excluding poorer people. Sadly, I have no idea how it would work and therefore, I doubt it will happen anytime soon.

im not saying that Diaz shouldnt have adjusted his game much earlier, i.e., knowing that Condit was gonna run when he got against the cage so double up his shots like he did but finish with a takedown. Or, knowing that Condit is trying nothing but to exit, punish him with kicks everytime he does cause hes not trying to hit you back so its a safe and free head or body kick. Condit's strategy is one that would never work again. He would have to come and fight next time.

I agree, but the business argument/rebuttal to that would be something along the lines of; "the preliminary fighters are not as much of a draw or public interest as the main card, so until they gain the prestige/notoriety of the main card, they will be paid less. There are stars and there are superstars, and the superstars will always be valued higher than the stars". Not my sentiments, just playing devil's advocate.

If they worked harder to get international PPV their revenue would go off the charts, it could easily triple in no time, thus, making them able to lower their prices. High prices have never been the way to raise income. The best way to go around it is: sell more. Plain and simple. Make PPV available all over the world; If television companies won't make a deal with you, create a site for online PPV, it's much easier. He doesn't seem to realize we're not in 1993 anymore.

You can not calculate in your example exactly as you do, because it's all based on speculation. We can, though, be hundred percent sure that if there was no piracy then everyone producing material (whichever kind) would be more well off, the prices of the material could be lowered, and the quality of the products could be increased and the distribution more available globally and inferior products with DRM would not be needed.

He's right, the UFC is just great with the fans, where I live (France) they have a deal with a website where you can watch the event live and in streaming for a few days later, and I'm thankfull for that, because if I had to pay 16€ to buy every event ( don't get me wrong,I would love to have them all in DVD for sure ), well I just wouldn't be able to follow up.

Its really expensive. Hooters pays almost $1000 per fight to show it for the night

What ppl need to realise is that piracy/filesharing wont go away, no matter how much u want to control the internet. So its about time for the music and movie industries to adapt with new services and copyright laws. CD/DVDs are a dying breed.

More people would watch UFC events if you could stream it for $5, its $25 here in NZ, it puts fans off, I go halves with my brother every event but i know a lot of guys that would stream online if it cost a lot less
