I don’t think he was trying to overcomplicate it. It’s showing that even Solas, someone who is deeply understanding of the plight and needs of spirits recognizes the *danger* in letting a LITERAL SPIRIT OF BATTLE take hold of you. Solas likely did the same with a spirit of Wisdom in his youth, becoming a Wisdom Abomination for Mythal and becoming connected to Fen’Harel. So he’s hardly one to judge, but battle *always* comes with risks and costs.

The short-sightedness of spirits being demons and vice versa is annoying. That is why I hate the Chantry and the Circle. The Avvar are the only sensible folk that look at the bigger picture. They don't discriminate spirits. Ever since I played the first game, I always thought that the whole Circle and Chantry was flawed. Sorry for the rant. It just annoys me how only Solas is open minded to spirits. Cole at least, was accepted for what he is but he is still thought of as something that should not be allowed to exist. Vivienne and Sera make that perfectly clear.
@afgusti42693 жыл бұрын
Yes sadly, Inquisition companion and the game in general was more pro Chantry than other games. It makes sense because the Inquisition, but it really took back variety. Even in DAO A circle mage like Wynne had an open mind about spirits
@nathanielrodriguez18732 жыл бұрын
It’s not without reason, though. Like Solas said, a person can taint the spirit with their character, like what happens with his friend. Anders was open minded to Justice, turned him into Vengeance, and murdered numerous people. I think what needed to be emphasized was that demons are only such when they turn dark. The avvar likely built their tradition through lots of trial and error. The spirits were nurtured and kept around for ages.

@@nathanielrodriguez1873But that's kinda the point - the reason is *definitely* not what they say it is or even what they think it is. Every character who is vocal about "spirits bad" also happens to be a reflection of the hypocrisy of their societies and most of their beliefs are built around justifying their place in it: Vivienne - A mage who rose from being an outsider with nothing to the most politically powerful of her kind and part of the top elite in the strongest Andrastrian nation. Iron Bull - A former Qunari cop turned Qunari spy who is a Tal-Vashoth in all but name, getting to live outside the Qun's demands without any of the dangers any normal Qunari would face. Sera - An elf "rescued" from a life of squalor in the alienage by a patron that she admits probably saw her more like a pet than a person, and whose whole life is spent rebelling against the social class she was raised in (though not a part of). *Cassandra's* the only real exception, but even she starts to lose her open-mindedness any time her faith is challenged. The rest are open hypocrites, so much that it's a defining personality traits in many of the DAI companions. Anders was the same - he was ultimately right that the Circle system was prone to injustice, but all his actions proved that he was as much of an asshole as every templar who oppressed mages thinking it would keep everyone else safe. This illustrates the point - their societies are fucked and make it more likely spirits will turn into demons, and they have no method to prevent it other than cutting off contact with them and quarantining the people more likely to be possessed. Compare that to the Avvar who respect the power of spirits in all senses of the word, and live with them according to their nature. You can also compare that to Tevinter, which despite doing all the things that are supposed to make a demonic possession buffet instead seem to have always dominated demons rather than being controlled by them. Then there's the ancient elves, which with Solas' comments and the Trespasser lore show that they lived alongside spirits with no worries, despite how fucked up the Evanuris are implied to be. The point is it's not that the spirits are the danger by themselves, it's that people are the bigger danger because they don't want to understand they're the bigger danger.
@chriskoloski323 жыл бұрын
I love when people like the Avvar just casually use magic or allow spirits around just to spit in the face of magic being evil cause of demons and abominations. It does get annoying when more than half of your party keeps talking trash as if they're 100% correct while the avvar have done this for hundreds of years and they're fine
@kongming66 Жыл бұрын
Just commented somewhere else that hypocrisy is a defining character trait of many Dragon Age companions 😂 It makes it feel more realistic tho, these are ppl with beliefs who have built their personalities around them and aren't going to just give them up even when their dogma is being proven unequivocally false in front of their very eyes, or even when their very existence goes against their beliefs (like Iron Bull)

also love the "wow the Elves should've just helped during the second blight and MAYBE there wouldn't have been a genocide I mean Orlais only got their champion killed" for all the good Dragon Age can do, the narrative always blames the oppressed for their own oppression. MAges are at fault for the hatred toward them, Elves deserve to be enslaved and murdered or worse, Swarves deserve to be plagued by Darkspawn even outside of blights. Terrible narrative themes they love to remind the player of.
@stephlrideout4 жыл бұрын
They like to have characters in the world hold those opinions, sure, to make you think about it, but not because they think that's a good opinion to have. Blaming the oppressed for their oppression is the easiest way to piss off Solas and Sera, for example. The devs just like to include themes that mirror the real world, difficult though they are.
@christopherandersson50823 жыл бұрын
I mean considering trespasser everything you said but the dwarves are kinda at fault for what they’re perceived as. The old elven mages were sociopaths who killed humans for fun and enslaved their own people bringing down their empire after infighting, the first massive human empire was Tevinter ruled by enslaving and blood magic using mages. Todays oppressed are just yesterdays oppressors fallen from grace. Both the fact some would hold those views in game and that it has a hint of truth is realistic
@christopherandersson50823 жыл бұрын
Also the elves didn’t just “not help” their army just watched a city of humans get completely destroyed by darkspawn and did nothing like they were simply watching a campfire instead of a city getting tortured and massacred
@bengunn9670 Жыл бұрын
It's just real politics. If you isolate yourself and reject allies, you become an easy prey for any power. If elves kept their policy smart and cunning, they could preserve their kingdom. It's not about moral justification of aggression, it's about consequences. For the same reason it would be wise for them to give at least formal nod to Andraste.
@ЛеснойБолван-я4щ10 ай бұрын
The comment does not imply that elves deserved what befallen them, that is what you read into it for some reason. It is quite a matter-of-fact statement actually, from political perspective, not moral one - yes, if elves helped Orlais during the blight their homeland might not have been destroyed again.

Cassandra can be annoying, but as the Inquisitor I like having two different points of view affecting my decisions (cough cough Solas and Cassandra) And as for Cole... He's like a son to me. His weird and caring nature and neutral point of view is also a good middle-ground between Solas and Cassandra. And honestly if I was able to take a fifth party member, it would probably be Dorian. He's awesome.

@@joanedwards6477 In other words both you and Claire frankly hate them all save those three. The more I learn about Vivienne the more I am convinced that she IS NOT a mage of no small talent like she claims. She is narrow-minded and dull when it comes to magic but that just might be the hard core Solas fan in me speaking.

@mishaz48209 жыл бұрын
+Емил Владимиров She's historically one of the youngest people to ever successfully undergo a Harrowing and become a full-fledged mage, she was hired by the Empress of Orlais to be the Court's enchanter because she was "the most knowledgeable mage in the empire", and cannonically she can do everything Solas can do outside of their specializations (Rift Mage vs Knight Enchanter, Knight Enchanter was also the most powerful specialization until a recent patch because you could solo a dragon fight easily). Also spoilers for Trespasser: Solas is literally a god who created the Veil, and Vivienne probably couldn't do that but more importantly she wouldn't want to. She limits her power because she was raised in an environment that told her that she is one step away from becoming an abomination and causing mass destruction before (hopefully) being killed by a Templar. She's not 'dull' because she fears possession, she's trying to survive. And even when she limits her view on magic and how far she'll let herself go, she's still much more powerful then the average mage.
@orthodox-mp6hv9 жыл бұрын
Misha Z You have a point about her being more powerful than the average mage, that much is true. Soloing a dragon is a gameplay mechanic don't confuse her lore-wise abilities with gameplay. Also don't forget that she became a knight-enchanter just for status, Not to mention that the warden, if picked is also one of the youngest mages in history to take his harrowing.That said you only confirm that she is narrow-minded when it comes to magic, she is a brilliant politician but her circle upbringing limits her magical abilities severely. Solas is right about the fact that there are no true limitations as to what magic can accomplish. Even with the veil, even with Mythal being just a wisp, she can perform magic Vivienne cannot even fathom only solidifying the claim that limitations only exist if they are placed there. The evanuris weren't gods but exceptionally powerful mages with a superiority complex.
