This paint job was a bit of a rollercoaster of "oh I really like that, eh I'm not sure why you're covering that up, oh that does look a lot better"

I'm sold on the idea that the setting isn't just more Grimdark. Everyone trying to Out-Grim and Out-Dark Warhammer Fantasy, when they could be Out-Fantasy-ing it and taking that market share with people like me in it.

the benefits of having a "vanilla" fantasy setting for something like a wargame is you aren't as boxed in/limited by whatever lore or weird quirks your setting has. if you do a fantasy setting that's also like, post-apocalyptic or in a desert, it's really easy to find yourself running out of things to do in that world. whereas a setting without a "catch" can evolve or you can do micro-settings to release more games in. like you sort of pointed out anyway, the interesting sculpts are really what matter here. great job! i already liked the paintjob but the gold filigree is really what nails it!

As half of the lore writers for Warcrow and somebody who has been admiring your work since the beginning, I’m incredibly proud to hear your words about the lore that I have poured my soul into. I’d love to see how your journey through Lindwurm develops. I already told you in another video, but I wanted to tell you again. I know that it’s a promoted video, but thanks anyway, it clearly shows that you really like Warcrow!

Hi Rodrigo! Sorry I must have missed your message on the previous video! Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoy the videos and the painting, I'm really enjoying the lore aspects of Lindwurm so far and I'm excited to paint, play and read more about the game once I get the starter set in the mail! Thanks!

I've seen a few videos about Warcrow, and even though I'm a big Infinity fan, this is the first video that actually got me interested in the game. I think Dana's perspective of the void that it fills is very well-observed, and not anything I've heard anyone else say. I also find it refreshing to see a mini painting video that doesn't go perfectly from start to finish!

So good to see Corvus Belli getting the love they deserve, I'm not really a fan of 'traditional' fantasy but Warcrow is something I will be picking up as soon as my bank balance and time allow. Also great to see a video that doesn't show a perfect finish first time and also one with an airbrush as dirty as mine! Keep up the non-GW stuff, it's why I started watching you although I understand - algorithms and stuff.

You know i hadnt considered that in an attempt to be different, all the fantasy games on the market are fairly unique reactions to Warhammer. Probably part of why Ive been happy with The Old World. I guess Kings of War is a more basic fantasy game. But for all the unique and creative ideas with other games, they're all more for the really indoctinated or familiar. There probably needs to be a really traditional straight forward game on the shelf for people with generic fantasy familiarity to go "oh i recongize this"

This was an amazing video! I have been trying to play with speedpaint in my airbrush and seeing the way you do it is inspiring I have had luck with gravelord gray and grim black, but I found magic blue to be gloopy. That is probably on me; I should have thinned it more and tested it first. Also, I had not thought to mix speedpaint with the medium to make a wash. I am going to add that into my toolkit as well.
@DanaHowl4 ай бұрын
Personally I have found that the speedpaint medium is pretty much the cure to any problems I have with speedpaints in terms of consistency! It slows down the drying time, helps it flow better, pretty much just makes it better and easier to control IMO

Agreed about the value of "Vanilla Fantasy" in wargames. One of the advantages the original Warhammer Fantasy setting has was that, barring some eccentricities, it was rooted in a mostly bog-standard Tolkien tropes (mixed with some historical flourishes). The Elves mostly worked like Tolkien elves and the Dwarfs mostly worked like Tolkien's dwarves. If you were a laymen looking to get into fantasy wargames, the presence of these fantasy staples made for good entry points. Age of Sigmar, by contrast, has marginalized these "Vanilla" tropes and armies heavily. Choosing instead to laser-focus on GW's own original (copywritable) tropes. On the upside, this makes AoS very unique (and difficult to replicate with third party mini manufacturers). But on the downside, it makes it significantly harder for someone whose only understanding of the Fantasy genre is Tolkien (or, latterly, Game of Thrones) to get into the setting. Even the Elves, Dwarfs, Orks, etc. are weird and hyperspecific, with any "standard" versions either nonexistent or hidden deep inside something like Cities of Sigmar (the last bastion of "normal" dwarfs). Having "Vanilla" Fantasy staples is its own advantage, because it has a built-in "hook" for those kinds of new players looking for comforting familiarity. When you look at Elves in Warcrow, you know exactly what you're getting into. An underestimated value in the Fantasy Wargames genre.
@DanaHowl4 ай бұрын
I agree completely! I originally had a part in the script where I compare the game directly to AoS like this, but it slowed down the pace of the video too much so I had to cut it! Glad to have this discussion going down in the comments because I totally agree. It feels to me very much like this game's approach is the counterbalance to the issues I feel with AoS!

So is the plastic that Corvus Belli using now, the bendy plastic like the new Heroquest?
@DanaHowl4 ай бұрын
No, not at all! The new heroquest minis I believe are made from cheaper board game plastic. These are much higher quality, look up Siocast for examples of the type of plastic these are made of, it's bendy like PVC minis, but the level of detail is much, much higher like you would get from most other wargaming minis!
@brotquel15924 ай бұрын
So, basically this is kinda like AoS with what AoS discarded... I'm not saying this as a negative, let me explain: with the passage to AoS, GW they basically abandoned any visual that could be shared with other fantasy settings (I assume to dissuade players from using cheaper alternatives as proxys) while warcrow is putting all their efforts into said discarded stereotypes. That is honestly a great idea! I get it, ok? Wanting people to only buy your products to play your games is legitimate, but I think that GW missed the other side of the coin AKA people buying your models to play other systems. While I absolutely LOVE the way the Sylvaneth went (monster dryads are 100% my vibe), how many games need berserking tree monsters compared to the games needing Legolas-like elves? How many games need your average dwarf in heavy full plate compared to the games needing punk half-naked berserkers or steampunk enineers? Not even to mention having models able to fit on a 25mm base! Corvus Belli basically created a game that fits in the growing in popularity tabletop wargame genre while also making models that could easily be sold to anyone interested in any fantasy setting. Seriously, how many people have you heard say "I need an elf for my next D&D campaign, this guy on a base large enough to fit an ogre with fishes floating around is exactly what I need!"? GW was so obsessed with their brand that they shot themselves in the foot, leaving the generic fantasy to the hegemony of the honestly not so great Wizkids, glad that CB stepped up to the challenge. Looking forward to warcrow and especially to those blue skinned barbarians you've shown while showing a gallery of their minis (the trio at 7:15, with the women seemingly having beast legs). I know it sounds strange, after talking so much about what fits generic fantasy, but you can't help what you like.

Is Para Bellum's Conquest not a fantasy wargame?
@josepholiveira28734 ай бұрын
I have mixed feelings about CB going so generic with Warcrow (apparently, they did market testing and found that people just weren't interested in a more 'out there' fantasy setting). I particularly grimace at having "primitive", violent orcs, though at least they're not also coded as PoC. I do need to shout out something in particular: They managed to make a shirtless female model that *doesn't* feel like its sexist and exploitative. The Northern Tribes' Evoker feels like a cool, powerful old sorcerer-witch, and she just chose not to put on a shirt because she's from a culture where that's not necessary. Given CB's history of weird cheesecake models, it shows a lot of growth.
@DanaHowl4 ай бұрын
I'm pretty much in agreement with everything you're saying here, but also you will be glad to know the Orcs in this setting are specifically not "primitive" or unintelligent, from interviews I am seeing them say things like "strong does not equal stupid" they are just a different culture, no less or more "primitive" than the other factions!
@RodrigoGarciaCarmona4 ай бұрын
I think you’ll find that orcs are far from stupid. In fact, they might be the wisest of them all. Or I hope that the text will convey that. 😅
@benjaminwalker57503 ай бұрын
Great painting video, I enjoyed it so much, particularly your explanation of your thought process as you tack and change directions. Very inspiring because it's easy to forget that painting can be playful and experimental like this. As an avid player of CB's other games, I can't wait to get my hands on Warcrow because they write stellar rulesets. The team behind Warcrow also wrote Aristeia! which is brilliantly written. Fingers crossed.
@breandan32804 ай бұрын
I might be in the minority but this being "generic fantasy" makes it more appealing to me. I don't think I am that interested in the game, but I find myself very interested in the models. I've always thought Infinity had really good looking minis but I'm not a sci fi person. But as a fantasy fan, these are right up my alley.
