Dan. I'm new to backpacking in general and I'm already swayed towards being an ultralighter but with comfort. I'm not sacrificing everything just to save a couple grams. Sleeping under a tarp with ants all over me is not ideal. I appreciate all the budget options and made many of my considerations of gear based on your inputs.

What a hoot to watch your videos. Love to have fun while learning. I’m an old backpacker 77 now and my husband is 88. We have done many short and long backpacking trips and I have found that one probably learns more camping skills on short trips. More weather conditions and so forth. Now days we are camping in a Airstream Basecamp and have used your opinion on equipment many times. So far the most useful has been hearing about Outdoor Vitals. My husband is always cold so I purchased a hoodie and down jacket from them and they work as great as you said they would. We also purchased down blankets for use in the trailer and that’s been a game changer too. Thanks for all the wonderful help. Sincerely, Barb Wilkinson

Dear Danny boy and cohorts; thank you for your positive attitudes! I stumbled across your channel when I wanted to make the transition from day hiking to backpacking. As a fellow Wisconsinite, Thru-hiking is a dream of mine but I wanted to work up towards those longer trips. Your page proved to be the perfect motivation to get me going! Why? It's because of the laid-back nature from which you approach everything. When you give an opinion you flesh it out with your reasoning. You come at it from an angle that is informative for newbies, but also answers questions the more knowledgeable users may have. It makes your reviews fun and also informative! You make those who are "weekend warriors" feel motivated to keep going. Not everyone is able to go on long trips! Enjoying the time you spend outdoors is what you're focused on, and it's really contagious. For those of us just diving into the community you are like a welcome beacon. Especially when it comes to convincing others we aren't crazy. Why? Because the backpacking you introduce people isn't an "endurance sport," which is what layman picture when they think of backpacking. I've gone solo camping since as long as I can remember. When I was ready to make the step into solo backpacking my friends and family were concerned. They pictured the movie "wild" and had no shortage of worries. It was hard for them to grasp the concept of backpacking for only a weekend. "Why not just get dropped off at a campsite?" was the sentiment. Being able to show them your videos did wonders. Seeing your casual attitude opened them up to the fact backpacking could be a leisure sport. I'm happy to see that you don't let naysayers get to you. I mean, comments are good for the algorithm anyways. ;) And if you make them feel passionate enough to type something out, you must be doing something right!

GREAT INFO, GREAT ATTITUDE. People that hate are very unhappy with themselves. My hiking partner and I have a saying-THE THREE MILE AND 8am RULE. In short, people that hike seriously and have a decent pack are almost always a friendly, willing to share info and just a really good person. We hike a lot at Mt. Rainier and we have yet to be proven wrong. Keep up the good work. Your humor is an added benefit.

You handle this perfectly, with a grin, a good laugh, make fun of yourself a bit, and move on. If you engage the trolls they just want more food. Though I did not find any of these comments that trolling. Yeah, I also get the idea of hiking not really possible where you live. I have traveled through and around Wisconsin as a teenager, it is much like Denmark. Flat, flat and flat with relatively small forested areas. Your videos have given me the confidence, that I can actually afford to get out on the trail and enjoy myself. Not to be afraid that I cannot afford the lightest and most expensive gear out there, that I can do it on my budget. So let the haters hate, and the jokers giving it back to you make you laugh.

It actually doesn't stop at Dan resembling a lead poisoned John Krasinski aka Jim in the Office, there's literally a scene in the Office season 7 episode 5 (episode name The Sting") where the following is mentioned: "Andy reads a Cornell magazine to Phyllis, stating that student Dan Becker had a climbing accident and fell off Mount Kilimanjaro. He then reacts, exclaiming, “Oh my god!” Phyllis asks if Dan is okay, to which Andy quickly replies that Dan had died, but Broccoli Rob had performed in a new Vermont state milk lobby “milk awareness” song titled “Calci-YUM!” Broccoli Rob recorded the song with Phish's Trey Anastasio and Andy is jealous of his success, while failing to acknowledge Dan Becker's unexpected death. " Even though you look like a lead poisoned Jim Krasinski, gotta admit kinda looking good for a guy that fell off the Kilimanjaro. Where's that review video at by the way, are you holding back on us for a rainy day? 🤔

There are all kinds of hikers. I have only been able to day hike in off time and vacation, but am gearing up for when my bf and I retire to section hike the AT, a dream I’ve had for over a decade. Whether you day hike, car camp, weekend backpacking or section or through hike, it’s all good fun and only people with low esteem trying to make themselves feel better feel the need to belittle others. I enjoy your reviews of equipment, some of which I’ve bought. I also watch Miranda in the wild and Homemade Wanderlust for a woman’s perspective and gear made for women. Some people take a little time to understand off humor that isn’t racist or sexist, etc., but that is just good clean fun. I raised 2 boys so I understand the male humor. Also, I have enjoyed your videos more with Emmet, and when you ask for his perspective on equipment that he’s using for the first time. Hoping to continue enjoying your videos for a long time.
