Dan C I work outside yard round and every year around October I start to let my beard grow and about April I shave it off and iv done this for 8 years now and iv know about oils and butters and washes but normally I just let it grow wash it with my hair and same soap this is the first year I have actually taken care of my beard and really cared about it and what it has looked like and that is all thanks to you and your channel!! This spring there is a 99.99% chance I will keep the beard this time and keep it going since it is as nice as it is this time. Thanks for the great information you provide here and it amazes me that you don’t charge for it everyone seems to want to charge for everything anymore I just really appreciate what you do on here!!

Great overview on heat Dan! Heat was a game changer for me. One thing that I found worked well (when I use to wear balm) is after heat, I would add balm and then hit my beard with an additional cold shot that really locked in the style. 👍🏼

I'm about to use the Aberlite Pro for the first time and straighten my beard for the 2nd time ever today. I use my beard comb at 160 celcius (320 fahrenheit), and it works perfectly. Actually, that comb is one of the best things i bought for my beard. I would almost always have a messed up beard in the morning, since im a side/stomach sleeper

Super clear informations. My beard is way better since I use heat. Doesn't take me a long time. I usually put my clothes after shower. Put my oil. Wait 5 min and comb my hair for 5 min. Heat with a boar bristle brush for less than 3 min. I need to get a better blow dryer, but not now. 💕

Fantastic video Dan! I too use heat 7 days a week for almost 3 years now. If I’m leaving my house, I am using a blowdryer on medium heat with the Chicago Pet comb and the #6. I always love having a purposeful styled beard when I’m presenting myself to the public I only use my heated brush about once a month or every 3 weeks as a “chin dip reset” only on my chin and sole patch area Agreed the most important thing people need to know is: practice makes perfect!! I’m one of those guy that no matter what I do with heat my beard ends up looking horrible….until a couple weeks ago I figured something out. I put my oil in after the shower wait then use a round brush and blow dryer to get it all straight and then as counter intuitive as it sounds I get get my hands wet with cold water and splash some cold water on my beard. Not saturate it but just enough to get it damp then I towel dry and come back in with just a little dab of beard butter and boom perfection. Not super overly straight and odd looking to me but that splash of cold water curls it back up just enough but not as curly as it was before and the little bit of beard butter holds it all in place. Hope this helps those guys like me that don’t like the way heat makes your beard look.

@@DanCBearded I usually do just sideburns with blow dryer. I did full beard with the heated brush for the heck of it. It worked OK on the sides, still prefer blow dryer. As far as the rest of my beard I think my beard looks better with more curl to it.

Whoops! Been using my heated brush at 400-430° for the past 5-6 months, my beard is really stubborn and that's the only way I managed to get rid of those dips (especially the one on the chin area). I only apply the brush for a very short time though(quicker strokes). No sign of breakage so far.

I think I've finally gotten my routine dialed in... I do a quick blow out (Dan has a video on it) then do a little touch-up with the brush at 310 degrees F I like to leave a little texture as well, even if I end up walking the line a little too closely and have a few fly-aways...

I used to do the - wet beard then hairdryer plus comb- thing everyday and I shed like crazy 30-35 hairs lost per day. And yes I did it slowly and with care. I don't do it anymore and only style it while DRY with a bristle brush. I got sick of trying to look perfect all the time at the cost of my precious hairs!! When done correctly there is no correlation between heat and shedding. That would be related to how you are doing it. Now the concept of not liking the look… absolutely! That’s totally personal preference. I respect all styles

There are always steps to take to help comb through easily so you don’t get premature shedding. 1) use a Chicago comb 2) comb in the shower, especially with conditioner 3) trial and error with different heat variables such as temp, time on beard, direction you comb. Just watching a video isn’t enough to perfect it for you.

I'm someone who shuns heat, but I did not use some of the tips here like waiting 5 minutes for the oil to soak in, and I had used a flat iron before getting the comb. I've also heard that hair dye can do the same, so maybe that was the problem. 2 years ago my beard was a dry brittle mess. It's basically been regrown without heat or dye. This one I won't even rest a hot bowl of food on my beard when I rest one on my chest! I also think a problem with beard combs is that we can't trust the temp gauge on these largely chinese-made devices. I used mine on a modest setting, but if I left it plugged in for a few minutes it seemed to get super hot, and I didn't even think I bought a junky model. You've got me curious enough that I'm going to use a blow dryer on mine in a few minutes

I've only been doing beard oil and a beard wash, and my beard has never been better. About once every 2 weeks I do a "stripping wash" on my beard, which means that I just suds it up with a reasonably pure/organic *_BAR SOAP_* , and after THAT (and only after that) I will use a beard CONDITIONER. So... OIL, WASH, SOAP, CONDITIONER. That's all I really need for my beard. No balm, butter, jelly, heat, or other expenses. And definitely no eating burgers and pizza with a fork (sorry Dan, that's just too far for me.) I did take Dan up on the silk pillow cases tho, which seems to be beneficial for ALL your head hair - face or scalp. I have also been loving Captain Fawcett's "Beer'd Wash" , and Craft Beard Co. oils (super affordable and quality oils). Dan's recommendation of the _Onedor Buffalo Horn widetooth comb_ has been a must. The Kent combs are the next best, but I use Kent more for on-the-go combs, easy to keep one in my car for whenever I need it. I use a pick in the shower sometimes. It's good to keep a comb in the shower to detangle the beard so you can lather it up better. Trying to detangle your beard before it's wet is a painful mess. And wetting the beard before the shower is just a waste of time. So a SHOWER COMB is a good idea. But it doesn't need to be a separate comb from your other comb, altho that is convenient. Really, just a tooth comb and a boar's bristle is all I recommend. 2 combs for your beard. One for detangling and spreading oil after an oil application, and another for that final touch. But be GENTLE with that boar's bristle final touch. Some of the best advice Dan ever gave me is that the boar's bristle brush is something to be very gentle with. I'm currently using Captain Fawcett's boar's bristle. It's a stiffer one, so be extra gentle. Otherwise you'll be livin in WAVE CITY. Dan's the man, he is great. But just remember, his job is to talk about ALL things beard-related. Balms, butter, heat, silk, etc. You may need heat, you may want balm, but just because he covers it doesn't mean it's essential. Give it a shot tho, ya never know til you try. With great beard comes great responsibility, yes. But ya gotta pick a practical routine that you will actually stick to, that will keep your beard healthy and thriving. Oil, Wash, Conditioner, Balm, Heat, doing all of that every day is likely not practical for most men. I suggest exercising moderation in the use of products. You'll know when you go to moderate, and then you can moderate the moderation accordingly.

Dan, how long is TOO LONG to wait for the oil to soak in? I’ve heard you say before 5-10 min and honestly I think my beard does better closer to 10. But is there a point in which the protective qualities are no longer good? Say I put my oil in but I got distracted (helping the kids, breakfast, ect) and I only now have time to do heat. It’s been 45 min. Is that too late? Do I re dampen, re apply and wait 5-10 min again?

Absolutely, once the oil is completely absorbed and dried from the outside, you no longer have the protection. I have found more than 10 minutes is danger zone. If it is too long, dampen, apply a small amount of oil, and wait a couple minutes, and then heat

Hey Dan, Today my beard straightner arrived and i went to look for some videos with tips on how to use it safely on my beard. Went trough couple of videos with tips for using a heat shield spray and i think i will try to do it. One thing that concerned me in your video was that i have the exact same straightner that you say not to use - the one with the one sided flat iron. Question - if it works on lower degree than lets say 300 will it be okay ? This way i think the heat will still be too direct, but i hope will cause less damage (maybe with the heat shield will be fine). Sorry for the long comment but i am interested what would be your suggestion 😊

As my beard gets longer I have less use for heat on my beard. I've never used heat on my beard regularly. My beard hair is straighter than most people's. My beard routine is to wash my beard in the sink in the morning if I'm not showering. Pat dry it. Then comb then oil and comb again.

In that case, try using more beard oil or a different beard oil (finding the right blend for you is important!). If that doesn't do it, try shortening the time to 2-3 minutes

I've been doing my beard the same for probably 7 years now. Every morning it is a complete nightmare and I have to wet it down and use conditioner, then hair dryer on medium heat and brush it upward with the dryer underneath just to get it to where I can then blow it downward to get it straight. It sucks but is the only way I've found to get it to sit correctly. I have neglected to use oil and maybe that's why, but I have noticed my beard smells like burnt hair. I don't keep heat on it too long, and I use it at medium and then cold afterwards but it still has a burnt hair smell. I apply my balm or butter after it's dry and it will stay nice for the entire day. Do you think that not using oil is causing my beard to burn even though I keep it medium and then cold? It's frustrating because it's soft and looks good but just has a burnt smell sometimes. It is a longer heard, I'm guessing 6 inches or so.

I know you mentioned applying butter afterwords but should you reapply oil? I feel like the heat would evaporate the oil but I could be wrong. Beard hasn't been long enough to need to worry about heat but since I'm working on a yeard I'm sure I'm going to need it before to long.

im kind of confused.. my showers i exit looking like a lobster.. i heard not to use water that hot on my beard but yet we can take a blow dryer to it.. optimum heat is around 325 but my hotwater heater is set to 130.. can you clarify why no lobster shower water on a beard? side note my beard is *business* beard short like mayor

So I've been having a hard time using a comb I'm sure it sound weird but I've used multiple ones my beard is super curly and really don't like to get straight a blow dryer and straighting brush definitely help but the comb just don't do it so I use a regular square brush but people tell me it's bad for my beard is that true I would use a comb or beard brush it it actually helped wood beard combs definitely don't allow me to style?

If you are taking about a bag brush, those are fine. As long as it is a quality one. Make sure you try combing conditioner in the shower. Can be a game changer for your issues

Absolutely! It is about getting the hairs straight themselves, and then putting them in the style you want. Try different angles and directions. All about trial and error!
