The hairs on my head started to grey when I was in my late teens but my beard stayed very black in my 20's. In my 30's I was shaving off the grey facial hairs because my style was just a Soul Patch or a Goatee for many years. I tried to dye the salt and pepper in my 40's, but gave it up because I hated the grey roots showing a few days later. No way was I going to immerse my face in toxic chemicals on the regular.

I learned from experience that my afro textured beard does not like heat, from blow dryers and heated tools: (I would get split ends right away) The only time that I use heat is with a conditioner on freshly washed beard. My "curls" are tightly coiled so I always start with finger detangling before I use a wide tooth comb. And I comb only when it is just slightly damp. Also, I use a brush only on the cheeks when it is dry, never on the length of my beard, wet or dry. But then My beard is past my chest when stretched out. For everyday, I keep it in a loose "bundle" so it looks like a short contoured beard and I only wear it out on special occasions. The bundle keeps my beard safely out of the way when I am working using my hands. The bundle only works on a very long beard, more than a foot long and makes it easier to wear a mask.

Dan my Brother, this is such a great video. I have followed you for nearly a year now and your advice has been amazing. I thought that I could not learn much more but after watching this I realised that every day was a school day. The amount of times that I have just what you talked about without even thinking and powering through when I got a knot in my hair. I have now conciously made an effort to not do this. If I can add a tip to our Bearded Bretheren out there it would be twofold: Firstly, make sure you Co-Wash regularly. Secondly is a bit more long winded. I have 3 combs that I use when combing my beard, I have an ox horn comb which has 3mm tines and 3mm gaps between them. I use this one first. I then have another ox horn comb with has 2mm tines with a 2mm gap between them. I use this one next. Lastly I use a normal Kent comb where the tines are about 1mm and the gap is about 1mm. I realise some of you may be thinking that paying for 3 combs may cost a lot but in the long run would you not rather do that than rip valuable hairs out of your beard? By doing this is gradually takes big knots out easily then medium sized then by the time I get to the Kent comb it goes though my beard like a hot knife through butter. This is my experience and advice so please take it or leave it. I have only put it on here to try and help people.

My entire beard is a problem area. It is so thick, coarse, curly and gnarly. I have to use grooming tools that are long and widely spaced apart and a lot of oil for slippage and I have to comb from the bottom or tips of the hairs and work my way up to the skin every time even when it’s short. Starting from the top or the skin never works for me. Great tips Dan C couldn’t agree more mate.
@drason694 жыл бұрын
Start at the bottom, and comb up an inch or two, as you remove tangles. I have long head hair, and that is the best way. Also, while the hair is damp after shower. Wet hair, has more elasticity

Also if you got only a very few gray hairs you can carefully cut them (better that pulling them off). This way they stay healthy so when you got more greys you can dye them (if you want).

I have been watching a lot of your videos and do consider you my trusted one when it comes to beards. I am 67 and recently retired from a public safety career in the fire service and can now not shave. I have been growing now for almost two years and my beard has never seen a scissor or clipper. I have always thought my beard should of been longer than it is, but it must not be in my genetics. I use scotch porter co wash, honest Amish leave in conditioner in between washing and only use pine tar soap to wash with and every man jack beard butter at night. I use a heated beard brush a couple times a month to straighten.I use a spray bottle to wet the beard in the mornings with honest Amish beard oil or leave conditioner and use a large tine plastic comb to slowly comb it out, as Dan described in this video. Here's the issue, lots of hairs in the comb. No tangles and if it sags I don't comb it through but take the comb out and reposition it. I am totally surprised with the amount of hair in the comb that I even have a beard. Is it the comb, products or something else in my beard routine?

Question on the hair bulb color. Does a healthy gray hair not at the end of its life still have a gray bulb? If so, how would you distinguish between a premature loss or a natural life cycle hair loss? Thanks ahead of time brother!
@DanCBearded4 жыл бұрын
Many grey hairs will still have a colored bulb, but if they do not there is a way to tell where the hair is at in its life cycle. It comes down to the size of the bulb. The bigger the bulb, the less the hair was ready to come out.

Within the past year, I've had at least 12 white hairs come in on the sideburn area of my beard on either side. I am fully embracing it, I am curious to see what I look like with a salt and pepper looking beard. I also have a seriously wavy beard as well, needless to say I'm just rolling with the punches all the way around.

If I get a snag, rather than power through it (as I used to), I like to switch to a larger toothed comb. Surprisingly, I recently switched to a solid coconut oil as my every day go to and snags are nearly non existent now. Now, regarding Grays, I used tweezers like crazy once I decided to do the big beard thing. Hurt like all get out, & seemed like those guys came back even faster & brought a few friends with them. Now, when I awake in the morning I'm rather proud of those new old guys I see sprouting out in there. As a single middle aged man, when not required to wear a mask in certain places, I notice that the ladies seem to like silver shine! Stay thirsty my friend! Lol

Try to put your fingers thru the beard first, then WIDE tooth comb, then narrow tooth comb for final comb thru. Keeping your beard oiled makes it a lot easier. Just like fixing a childs hair, be careful on how you treat your beard. Be nice to your man main. You will be proud of yourself for doing so.

I haven't experienced any bad knots or tangles yet (knock on wood) but when I hit a snag I pull the comb out and go at it from another angle slowly and carefully (as you stated) & does the trick thx as always Dan

My beard exploded to 4 inches and then slowed wayyyyy down. I've had a 9-10 inch beard before so I know this isn't my terminal length. I follow ALL the Dan C tips, both external and internal. Hmm. Not sure whats going on with the beard.

Dan, Fantastic video again! For me the tangles can be just about anywhere, especially at the ends of the beard.Your suggestion on combining your beard in the shower really helps. I find holding the comb at a 90° angle while combing keeps you from pinching the hair and less likely to get tangles. Of course using a good co-wash is a must. 👊🏼👊🏼 :-{}}}}

Once your beard gets longer, there isn't as much of a need for a round brush. A comb is much more gentle

I think the under beard gets Tangled because it rubs on our t-shirts. I've got a very very thick beard which I guess is a blessing but my under beard gets so tangled it's my biggest issue. I've commented before asking you for advice and how to keep it from getting so tangled. No response by the way LOL

I have a different problem. My beard seems too dry. It’s very bushy and about 4 to 5” long. I drink plenty of water every day, do a cow ash about every other day and a good cleaning once a week. I use beard oil every day. I tried to use butter but the one I tried, every man Jack, is not pleasant in the aroma dept. I’m not really fond of most products with Shea butter, it’s the smell. I use several varieties of oils from very thin that seems to be better at hydration to some sticky oils the seem to help with hold. When I use butter at night my beard is crazy in the morning and hard to tame. Never been fond of balms, they are so heavy so I haven’t been using them much. Any help from the great swami of all things bearded?

I do admit, I wasn’t as gentle as I could’ve been in beginning, but I also try to use wide tooth comb in shower or with a morning rinse ... helps a ton... I lost sight early on “ wanting more growth” but now I pay way more attention to what I have.... Great Video DanC! Thanks
