OH MY GOD. That swiping the burns and cheeks across the face with the Aberlite. The pushing the mustache out with the tongue. I've been doing this for months, maybe years if you include my first go-around. HOW DO I NOT THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS? It worked SO well. The rolling of the round brush up instead of down. I'm like, "I've been studying beards and products for probably hundreds of hours now; there can't be any new thing I don't know that would change my beard life around." Then BAM. This is officially the most helpful KZbin channel of my life, and I use KZbin for A LOT of things. Maybe this channel hasn't made me the most money or been the most life-changing, but it has certainly impressed and surprised me the most. Bravo. Never delete your old videos. Watching those made me sure I could find the answers I wanted because I was like, "How did he get his sides so straight in later years."

I remember your old routine videos and have adopted a lot of it but all the small details on this blow me away, way more advanced not to say it isn't helpful to anyone. Always good to remember it varies from person to person but just watching someone who knows exactly what they need is something else! Will possibly have to try the layers with comb and dryer or heat brush but haven't figured out where or if I need that (besides basic moustache training), what i can say is the very gentle brushing with the Heat Brush after positioned the hair with comb and blow dryer changed things for me, i believe that is something from older videos i didn't pick up on but notice more now, if you go for larger beard becomes important, been doing that for about a month and I'm so much more satisfied with the fullness, the natural but clean look of it.

Hey Dan, just come across your channel. I've been a long time sufferer of a condition called Trichotillomania, a compulsive hair pulling disorder. I would target my beard on a daily basis and pick so many hairs that I would have HUGE bald spots. Now, I can honestly say that after 3 months, I've not pulled a single hair out and I'm finally getting some volume to my beard. Its at that "awkward" stage at the moment, sitting around 2 inchest long. Im hoping my trich days are over as I would absolutely love a beard like this.

I know you've mentioned this in previous videos about your imperfections... which is wild because, more often than not, your beard is terms of growth, and density is damn near perfect. But in this grooming video... you can see some of the imperfections in the side burns and cheeks and not to say it's bad... It's actually so reassuring and therapeutic for me to see it this close. It motivates me to strive for a beard like yours, bro. Now I typically say to myself that it's not a good look for me... but bro... your beard is ideal. @DanCBearded that's my issue. Some days I see my beard like it's bad ass... and then I see it like it's just pure ass. Like I see all of my imperfections. I know it's also to do with my own mental state and insecurities but I am fighting that daily. Have been for more than 2 decades.

I know all beards and routines are different in results especially where I live in TN and work in construction. I use a heated brush in my night time routine on a low heat setting before butter. It makes my beard soft and the next morning easier to style. I have to use conditioner daily as my beard feels awful without it. For me using the heated brush at night, my beard maintains it's style all day the next day, less tangles to deal with and I've seen less broken hair or split ends. That little touch has been a game changer for me the past few months.

Three cheers for purposeful beards! I also drop my chin when combing, it stretches the skin and separates the hairs a bit, making it easier to get the comb through. I like to pull the Aberlite lengthwise through each half of my stache to take advantage of all the spikes, rather than sideways which only uses a small band. It takes fewer passes. I hadn't thought of pushing out with my tongue-- will try it tomorrow!

The logic behind this product seems to make sense in that it closes the cuticle of the hair to make each hair smooth. Your video is the first I heard of a cold brush and went to check it out (also found your review from several months ago). I saw it's discounted and placed an order for it. Hey man love what you’re doing here as always. I also think heat is very helpful for my beard. I don’t do it nearly as often as I should (sometimes I want to get ready quickly in the morning) but when I do, I notice my beard is usually softer than days I don’t use it. Not sure if it’s in my head or maybe it’s because I typically use it after oiling my beard (after 5 mins of course) so maybe it’s that build up. I only use a heated brush nothing to fancy just a resistive heater element. It’s actually meant for the hair on top of your head but it actually works great. I used to have a blow dryer but when I moved into my apartment I didn’t have a good place to store it. But honestly I prefer the heated comb.

I love it. I also think you should show us your nighttime routine. I have recently (as of today) started a routine without any product- no oil, no butter, just showering with beard wash (Beard Octane, of course) and some unscented conditioner (from The Bearded Mack.) I do use a little bit of heat protectant spray that my wife has. The reasoning behind it is that using oil and then having my beard hairs make contact with my wife's face results in painful breakouts on her face. I solved the issue of the scents and found a great hypoallergenic oil and butter, but now I'm trying to figure out how to protect her from the oil itself. I managed to style my beard by blowdrying it dry and then using my heated brush to tame it up some- it has more of a rustic look but it still looks great, I just need a trim. Perhaps I'll be taking this to the Beard Advice Live email for help. Thanks for all you do for us Dan!

I add one more to the hair drying, I go side all the way across and then the opposite way. Then I go down with a hair dryer and then underneath. That seems to help train the waves on either side of my mustache. I seem to change up some steps as the length is getting longer. I finally ordered a Chicago comb today and will be adding that to my routine

My beard is about 1/3 to 1/2 yours, no sides, just the front curtain. I watched THIS one like a HAWK. Realized from watching that MUCH of this intuitive once you get to these lengths. Or it's from subliminal osmosis. Whatever, right? Long as ya got it! I do NOT do your blow drying routine. I do comb my oil phase probably more than most but my beard feels strong, full & healthy... but, much like you, this is a seven day commitment. I also train it with a round boar's bristle brush for my coarse 'stache and a flat travel boar's bristle to do the actual beard. Gentle to start but as I "feel" the brush gaining control of the hairs. I draw the brush along its long axis first, then, quick flip of the wrist and short axis. Just look at it and feel the difference when you do. You be able to tell. I have previously detangled it after having oiled it. Very unruly beard. Need to save what I can. Then, I use an ox horn comb that, if applied carefully, I can draw through on "first pass" due to the earlier work. Work that bad-boy through until "smooth". YOU know...😉. It takes time and patience but a beard on this scale is an exercise in that, if nothing else, right? Dan! Thanks for your inspiration to see this through to at least today. This far in, I'm committed. Keep it up. Other "budding" beardsmen NEED this stuff. ✌️👀👍

This might be too analytical for some, but I’ve been into photography for a long time now, and I remember my photography teacher in college (when I first getting the bug) say that to be a great photographer today(this was in 2005 btw lol) , the learning curve has drastically decreased, you can take a photo and nearly instantly review it and see what areas you want to fix or what worked and what didn’t. So you take another photo, and another and another. When he learned, he had to go through a whole role of film, develop it, and look at it then to see how he did. And you wouldn’t just blow through a roll of film usually to see one photo. So by the time you got to put a new roll in and start again you might not even remember exactly what it was that you needed to change, so the whole process of taking a photo and learning was a very slow process, and it would happen over the course of time, unlike the way photography is today. The beard to me is similar in the respect that at least for most of us and I mean if we care about the health of the beard, is a once a day (maybe twice on a rare occasion) session of styling and seeing what worked and what didn’t. You have to wait until tomorrow to try again. You don’t really, wash, dry, oil, blow dry, ect and then go “ok I’m gonna shower and try again right now. “ and do that over and over and over in the same hour. It doesn’t work that way. It’s something you get once a day. If that usually. So training your beard or your muscle memory is something that will slowly develop (pun). It just takes time and patience. It’s a long game. The beard is like the old school way of learning photography, you do it once, see what happens and come back the next time. Thank you Dan for all the content!

Awesome tutorial on the beard grooming Dan, I’m a round brush and hairdryer guy, my beard being red tends to wave and curl way more than yours even though I groom mine every day right after a shower. Also the tip about waiting 3-5 minutes after applying the oil is a real game changer, when you first shared the tip I was skeptical but you were right!

The Cry-o brush really helps lock in my mustache, but I have to use sparingly on my beard (or used to 😉 hopefully soon again) if I go too slowly it'll reintroduce the waves I just removed. I'm finding that different heated brushes definitely work better, I've struggled to get a more natural look with my mustache, I can wax it, but i want a fuller relaxed look... Some heated brushes over straighten and make it look thin, the better ones ( I'm testing the Aberlite Pro) are more controlled and definitely worth the extra cost... I'll be sharing my results soon 😎

Another great excellent video by the one and only Dan Command! I love how thorough and transparent you are with the explanation of things! You speak my language! I have somewhat of a reputation of being “mouthy” or “long winded” about things I love and understand! But I believe in communication is key and while there is something to say about talking too much in certain situations I see more common people don’t communicate the way they should and it is problematic on different levels! I grew up hearing “men” say women talk a lot and men don’t as much but I don’t agree with those stereotypes! I watch you and Sam on Wednesdays and I love how you break things down the way you do. Another helpful video. While my beard isn’t as long as yours I’ve been following your routine for the most part. Something new I learned was that you can go back and forth between heat and cold. I always try to do everything hot then lock in with the cold shot last. But sometime I see something I missed and want to fix after cold.

Excellent routine Dan. My beard is at about 8 inches now and I use both a #8 and #1 and I have contemplated just using the #8 and leave the #1 alone. I’m really working on my sole patch now with the round brush because it splits in the middle and I really like the way you used it. So I’m definitely stealing that. I always try to pay extra attention to your routine videos and see where I can improve my own. I do my sideburns the way you do with the heated brush, but I have never separated the sideburns from the beard and brushed the bottom down like you did here. I like the “heat in layers” concept and I’m excited to try it out asap! Lastly, I need to invest in a cold brush. Everything else, I already do, thanks to you! Nice work, Dan!

This is one of those videos you need to watch multiple times to get all the info Q: Why Chicago Comb #8 versus a brush (round or flat) when blow-drying your beard? Q: Why the opposite direction with heated brush and sideburns? Does that method help it lay flatter? Style better? Q: If you were to use butter or balm would you still cold-shot hair dryer and cold-shot brush?

Thanks again Dan, I noticed that you didn’t “cold shot” underneath your beard. Not necessarily ? When you oil the skin underneath, why not the skin on top, or front of your beard ? Thanks again.

I mainly use the cold shot to lock in styling and I do not want to mess the style up by going underneath again. Just personal preference! For the oil to the skin, I am working it to the skin all throughout the beard from underneath with my fingertips. I then go back in and coat the outside of the hairs. Finished with the comb working all of that down to the pores.

Yeah, people tend to say that wearing hats every day kills your beard, but that's wrong :) it doesn't do any bad. Though you have pretty good hair... you would really rock one of those inflated hairstyles that go up (with volume) and to the side (I don't really know what it's called lol)

Evening is simple, two possible options: 1) evening shower = oil, wait 3-5 minutes, butter 2) no evening shower = rinse beard in sink butter (not to the skin)

Just to clarify, you use the heated brush every day? Aberlite recommends only 2-3 times a week, so i was curious. Because I'd lovetor use the one i just bought every day without worry.

Ok, I feel somewhat validated now as this is almost exactly what I do. It's good to know I'm doing it correctly. Quick question though...I noticed you pulled a few strands out of your comb/brush every once in a while. On average, how many hairs do you pull out of your comb/brush, etc. and how many would be too many?

When grooming probably 5-10 hairs are noticeable. In average throughout the day most people are going to lose 30-50 from shedding. If it has a white bulb at the end (regardless of beard hair color) it’s healthy shedding

It does, as it should. You produce more sebum and we use beard oil. Remaining clean is much more important, even in terms of beard health and growth

Okay Dan, I know you normally don't use beard butter in the morning but, IF you were going to for some special reason, at what point during your morning beard routine would you add the butter and how would you do so?

I would say after heat/cold shot. When I use butter or balm, it's always the last thing I do, followed by a comb to evenly spread the product and finalize style. Maybe it's different if you use a cold shot(I don't so I'm not sure).
