The reason the original script doesn't have voices for Rean is that his voice actor actually is famous on Japan, the guy did the voices of a lot of anime characters so he is pretty well known. To cut the costs they made only the main cutscenes to have his voice. Anyways, this continues on all of the four games in Japanese anyways.

Its so very odd to look back on game 1 like this. Yet, this foreshadowed many things. Reans obliviousness, his fondness for doling out headpats, and being at odds with Elise and her choice of dance partners. (Poor Patrick, that roast by his butler was brutal). I also wasn't aware that Sara briefly touched on North Ambria. And of course, the begrudging respect that Machias and Jusis bear toward each other.

I swear Falcom doesn’t even attempt to hide who the main girl is lol. With Elie in Azure as Alisa in this game, their scenes are so much more mutually romantic and get actual build-up through the main story. Sometimes I think the games would be a lot better if they stopped trying to be Persona-lite and just had a defined romance like in the Sky trilogy.

I agree with most of that, but if you want the "canon" relationship, making it an in-game choice doesn't inherently take anything away from it. What's the point in trying to hide the main/default love interest if there's going to be one? I'd much rather they water down the scenes with Alisa (especially the trap door incident) and go all in on allowing the player to choose than throw that out and make it so that Rean is inevitably paired with the first girl he runs into on campus. Taking the choice away makes it less fun for the people who like other characters a lot (or dislike Alisa). I personally went for Laura because she's my favorite of the possible pairings, and taking the choice away means I miss out on her asking Rean to dance first. That was the most memorable part of the entire school festival for me because of how much I hate the "guy asks girl" tradition (and the fact that it's so within her character to do so and neither Alisa nor Emma would ever have the guts to do it). And, of course, Rean comes in clutch with the buzzkill: "You and I have something even closer than the rest of our classmates: *swordsmanship* ." What's even funnier to me is that Laura's farewell ironically might be the most romantic out of all of them. But then again, I'm not a romance guy, so I don't think about it too hard. That actually helped me relate to Rean throughout most of the game even though it seems like he's mostly just oblivious as opposed to disinterested. I kind of wish he wouldn't have broken character with Alisa in the dance scene, though. If I had the chance to pick no one in my first playthrough, I would have been seriously temped to. I actually _did_ pick no one for the bike ride, but of course they make you ride with Crow in that case, so I reset and picked someone else. 😂

Its not just that it makes you choose but also that most choices just aren't interesting. Stuff like "machias likes coffee" isn't really worth an optional bonding event and couldve easily just fit in the story as an actual conversation piece between multiple characters. A lot of them could also just be straight up side quests instead of the actual side quests the game has. Cs1 bonding is still relatively inoffensive but it really drags down future games once characters become more and more irrelevant to the plot.

Here’s my theory, I’ve got Emma, alisa, Laura, fie all to lv 5 max link and spend 1 ticket on each. I’ve won the game (including just going to the tea house and choosing relationship) on Emma and fie and I can bond with them. I’ve lost the mini game with Laura, and alisa so no bonding. For the flower garden walk, I choose towa, I’m almost positive I didn’t miss any other bonding events with her so I’m going to assume that that event is automatically a failure (I’ll different events in NG+)
