This was another satisfying piece to watch. I think what I loved about this was how different the tone was compared to their previous releases. And this was the first time we got to see the first subunit of SEVENTEEN!
Let me know what you want me to watch! Or better yet, suggest another type of content I should make that could help you learn more about dance! Whether you're an aspiring dancer, training to be a K-Pop idol, or just want to appreciate the art of dance-
I want to share my knowledge with YOU.
Hope ya'll enjoy this video!
Quick about me:
My real name is Tad, but DonKawaii/Don was simply an IGN name I created playing FF14 online, so I kinda just rolled with it. Lol. I am also a teacher, and I teach people dance. And normally, I teach my students dance through sharing my own choreography, giving people drills or exercises to build foundation and technique. and I've been dancing for 15 years mainly growing up through Hip Hop dance culture, but my foundation also includes minor areas in ballet, jazz, and tap. And how I got into K-Pop was because the main three groups, Wonder Girls, Big Bang, and SNSD. That followed with korean dramas, variety shows, and the rest is history.

According to Bumzu-nim, HIGHLIGHT came to life when Hoshi came to him and asked for it. Hoshi was like "Hyung, I want a song with these beats 'dun-dun-dun, dan-dan' and you can dance thru it like this..." Like he literally showed Bumzu what dance while humming beats he wanted and they created this song.

@RoseQuartz Serenity Nope, Woozi didn't participate in Highlight. He was not in the song's credits. And this behind story was told by Bumzu and Hoshi on Bumzu's concert.

Sharing this link that has the clips and translations if anyone's interested. :) "Highlight" was Hoshi explaining to Bumzu his song idea. "Hit" was the one where all three of them were together (in the gym) when it was created. twitter.com/forhoshee/status/1223942645233274880?s=20

Pre debut Seventeen experienced how strict Hoshi (Performance Unit Leader) since he is their main Choreographer, he is also the one monitoring svt's dances. He always makes it sure that they are synchronized, one mistake, go back to the top until you make it perfect. He can even see angle differences, how high your arm should be and more. And fun fact, one of their Lead Dancer JUN didn't auditioned for Dance position but for vocalist position but as they training, he got the lead position for the performance unit. Tbh, Hoshi, Dino and THE8 are the only ones auditioned that have deep knowledge about dance.

That's awesome for Jun. And I appreciate that about Hoshi. It's important to keep people on their toes, especially during a cleaning process.

Basically, it's not the long training period but how they were disciplined and passionate on that period. Hoshi and Woozi in particular led the team and were VERY strict during their training. They didn't move on with a single routine until every one get it right. They were honestly scary back then. Whenever I watch 17tv clips of their rehearsals for evaluation exams, it gives me goosebumps... Hoshi and Woozi are much nicer now lol. Maybe because it was obviously easier for them to learn the performances now.

i remember s.coups once said that their practices are more of "short but very focused" hours. they dont have much issue with being on the same page and synchronizing with each other because theyve trained in this group for how many years together. also i already saw someone comment it, but yes hoshi (the performance team leader, seventeen's main dancer and choreographer in charge of monitoring their performance) is really strict about details. there was this clip where they recreated themselves learning highlight with hoshi teaching and the others were complaining about how hoshi was so precise about "turn your head to this angle" or "put your feet about this angle" then have specific measurements for them 😂 but i do understand the reason he also explained that since they were a large group, they needed to look clean while performing or else it'll be hard on the eyes of the viewer. really adds to your understanding of how passionate seventeen are in their craft as artists and their work ethic 💕

More than their long debut process, Seventeen's musicality should be attributed to the fact that they're so heavily involved in their production. Highlight literally came about by Hoshi going to Bumzu and explaining the song he wanted through dance moves. That's not even talking about the songs fully composed by Woozi (who's a great dancer himself) with input from the other members. They have musicality because they all have the same understanding of their music, because they all have input into it. Of course their long predebut helped with their teamwork nd synchronization and made the whole choreography and dance practice process more efficient. But for musicality itself, I don't think that's the main element.
@DonKawaii1
@DonKawaii1 3 жыл бұрын
Ahh, that's big information! I love it when groups take part in their own production. And you're definitely right, musicality isn't the only factor. I didn't mention in this video, but I would also say that approaching a cleaning process more holistically can largely be beneficial to their workflow, rather than just understanding details of the choreography such as angles, textures, or even the sounds that they're hitting. Finding intention, the mindset, physical well-being, what feelings or emotions are involved, etc.. A lot of things can contribute to their cleanliness. So you make a great point! =)
@jadev164
@jadev164 3 жыл бұрын
@@DonKawaii1 Oh I though other commenters would have told you that Seventeen is largely self-produced ! And those aren't just empty words, Woozi produces (composes or writes, or both) around 90% of their tracks, and if he isn't involved then it's the other members who are (all of the members have songwriting credits). And the performance team makes their own choreographies : Hoshi collabs with more experienced choreographers for their title tracks but their b-sides (like Highlight here) are fully choreographed by themselves. On top of that, they have a hand in deciding their own concepts and direction, they've designed their own merch, directed and shot their own MVs and their own magazine etc... They always try to take ownership of everything they do so they can communicate better with their fans.

In terms of detail, seventeen is one of the most articulate groups in dancing- if not the most detail. Every movement of the fingers, arms and feet always conveys a message that is integral to the music they perform. You’ll see their growth even more as you go thru the more latest tracks.. especially the Japanese songs.

ooh so next should be don’t wanna cry? very excited for it, dwc is probably one of the most iconic choreos in kpop. i hope you also check out crazy in love (promoted b-side, so it has a dance practice)! both are very different from the “freshteen” concepts you’ve seen so far (minus this one)
@spacetardigrade
@spacetardigrade 3 жыл бұрын
Actually thanks to your reaction to this b-side I realized how genius this song is when checking out the lyrics again. If you only take the lyrics it can be interpreted as a sultry/passionate love story BUT coupled with the performance you will realize this is actually about loyalty between artists and fans as well as being performers (there are lots of "performance" elements in the choreo at one point woozi's group was even doing the clapping). "Wherever we are in the world, if we believe in each other, this moment when we face each other - highlight" that's so big brain of them

Seventeen just practices like crazy, I mean their dance director/advisor would give them 10 push ups when they make a slight mistake or when their emotions aren't right. To think, more than half of these boys don't have a dancing or singing background or they didn't even dream of becoming performing artists, they were just dragged in to it, so they just have to really practice hard. But now they just fell in love with performing.

that's a super fascinating perspective about their long debut process and how it might have aided in their impeccable musicality and synchronization! as someone that's never been part of a dance crew, i wouldn't understand that inside perspective of being together for a long time resulting in essentially a streamlined choreographing and learning process, making it like way easier to really hammer down the moves and pick up on the smaller details that really lead to a cleaner final product, i guess. what you said about your own company, with the vocabulary they used, made a lot of sense and is something i'd never really have known. anyway, seventeen have always said that it was really hard, thinking for like 3 total years that "we'll debut next month", some of them even trained for much longer than that, but to hear that that difficult process worked well for them in maybe unexpected ways was, again, jsut a really interesting perspective to hear. god, i think everything i said just made sense. anyway, thanks for the reaction!!! i'd forgotten how much i love this choreo so i was happy to watch it again along with you.
@iDrummerGirl

also, one reason this song sounds so different, more serious than their usual stuff, is i guess because it's a b-side! their title tracks are more or less the same vibe (save for a few), very poppy and positive and fun, meanwhile they explore like every genre they can get their hands on in their b-sides. if you really get to listening to their whole discography, you'll find that their range in styles is insane.

Thank you so much for reacting to Seventeen again I'm so happy to see someone really talk about their dancing in depth especially with the knowledge of where certain dance moves come from and whatnot!! I'm wondering if you'll be reacting to other b-side choreos? Maybe after you finish all the official choreography videos haha... I know we're all excited for Don't Wanna Cry and I believe starting from that comeback they released choreo videos for the songs their promoted alongside the title track (in the case of DWC it was Crazy in Love), but even other than that Seventeen has performed almost all their songs in their discography. I think Fast Pace from this same album would be interesting to watch, but I'm not sure if there's any videos that won't get copyrighted T_T. A lot of their earlier bsides like OMG and Rock were performed. Also the iconic kingsman-themed NO F.U.N haha... Also if you ever get tired of analyzing and want some breaks you can watch special MVs like Healing or Smile Flower. Oh I was also wondering if you were going to react to Shining Diamond? It's their predebut song that was slated to be their title track but got changed in the end. They recently performed it again and it was kinda emotional to see hahah... Also!! Sorry for typing so much ahah but there's a performance unit version of Adore U that is very cool. There's a vocal unit version as well (and a video of an acoustic version that was arranged by Joshua). There's actually so many versions it's a little insane hah, no wonder DK couldn't remember the original chorus melody at one point because there were so many different arrangements.

Woah I love this comment. I'm not a dancer myself so when I got into Seventeen, all I knew was that they danced really well with great choreography and great songs, but one thing that made me keep being interested in them was how they always bring something new even with the same song. I remember when I was getting into them, I already loved their songs and talent, and I was watching all the performances at MAMA, and after that all the year-end shows. I've already seen the song in a music show, the MV, and also the special video. I thought, "nice, different versions." I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that they performed it again and it was ANOTHER different version (which they really nailed). And then I watched another year-end performance and it's ANOTHER different version of the song (which is also great in its own way), and also with another song I haven't seen them perform. (TBH, I was into another group then and I was in denial about loving SVT performances more than that group's performances. But just seeing how they kept doing new things and never got boring made me fully stan SVT in the end.) I love that they have many versions of the same song. (Acoustic versions, mellow versions, rock version of a solemn song, orchestra version, part switches, unit switches, love love love!) I love that they keep bringing something new to the table in every performance. They are truly on fire in terms of creativity.

Well on a summarize they are family ❤️ so they have come to the point that they don't to discuss so much about certain movements or to be synchronized or clean . In fact they always joke about that kind of things ... Scoups the leader of the group the other day saw on weverse a screenshot from a fan with the choreo of DWC on a presentation they did yesterday and He said yeah is pretty but Dino is out his line 😂😂🤣. So Pretty much everyone of them are so deeply involve that is almost a game to find somebody who is messing up 😂. If the follow mv is Don't wanna cry can I suggest to watch Before or after this song the choreo of Without you and Crazy in love? This is because they were designe with Hoshi's ideas of being a continuous so first is crazy in Love than DWC, then without you and Clap . You will notice that they start each coreo on the last position of the past one. I'm only suggesting this because idk if you are watching the others sub unit MV
