Reacted to NCT 2018's full group collaboration performance. Strength in numbers here, baby! 🔥🔥
Let me know what you want me to watch! Or better yet, suggest another type of content I should make that could help you learn more about dance! Whether you're an aspiring dancer, training to be a K-Pop idol, or just want to appreciate the art of dance-
I want to share my knowledge with YOU.
Hope ya'll enjoy this video!
Quick about me:
My real name is Tad, but DonKawaii/Don was simply an IGN name I created playing FF14 online, so I kinda just rolled with it. Lol. I am also a teacher, and I teach people dance. And normally, I teach my students dance through sharing my own choreography, giving people drills or exercises to build foundation and technique. and I've been dancing for 15 years mainly growing up through Hip Hop dance culture, but my foundation also includes minor areas in ballet, jazz, and tap. And how I got into K-Pop was because the main three groups, Wonder Girls, Big Bang, and SNSD. That followed with korean dramas, variety shows, and the rest is history.

So true, there's that one performance where they have backup dancers and elevated platforms. And they're climbing those instead of on top of each other during Lucas' rap and Ten's solo dance, it's crazy! The power Ten has during his solo with that background of stacked up dancers is just insane

I hate the boom arm cameras too lol, it always makes such a weird and artificial viewing experience. The growls in the back, the laying part and the formation during Lucas' rap are amazing, it feels like there's an actual tiger on stage. And when they hop down but only Taeyong stays, you can really feel his presence throughout the whole performance. Our Ten has both solos in 2018 and 2020 and I love it, a well-deserved position! I'm sure you're gonna like Resonance formation more (even though they split into mini-groups). There is no awkward "backline" anymore. It felt so weird for me in BoB too but oh well, it's hard to choreograph I'm sure. 2018 is choreographed by Testa but in 2020 you see Ryu.D's work, which I absolutely love. That man did wonders for NCT since their debut. Resonance (NCT 2020 project) is quite different compared to BoB. Since they basically did a mash-up from a few of their latest songs together with the new "Raise The Roof" track. Sadly there is no dance practice to it, only a few live performances from award shows and such + official MV, but it shows the formation pretty well! Can't wait for Resonance 😊

So cool to hear your thoughts on this. Yup, my favourite parts of this piece are some that you mentioned too, the breathing beast of a group at the beginning, the floor work during Mark's rap, the pyramid formation etc I agree that this choreo looks a bit detached in some ways. As was mentioned by someone else, this was first performed live at MAMA in 2016 as part of a dance collab stage (you can check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmOph5SEjrN3rLc MAMA is pretty strict about strikes but just for your own fun and it is interesting to compare) NCT was a smaller group who had just debuted then and it was also a shorter track, about a minute and a half. They expanded it for the 2018 project and many of the members didn't get a "stand out part" which made fans angry (kpop fandom is *deeply* personality based). I think because it was adapted from a smaller group, integrating all 18 members at the time, especially on the short time scales they are often working with made it feel little less cohesive. Yup, there wasn't a 2019 collab project/album. I think there were many reasons for this and I also think it's a good thing. Doing them too often would lessen the impact plus it would put a LOT of pressure on already packed schedules. WayV had debuted that year and it gave them time to establish themselves and work on their own albums. Taeyong, Mark, Ten and Lucas all debuted with SuperM that year as well. Then there was the political tension between China and South Korea over the last few years that meant if WayV wanted to promote in China they couldn't mention their connection to SM, NCT or any Korean culture. Thankfully this has eased enough that 2020 collabs could happen (and hopefully Lay can do a comeback with EXO soon) They changed their approach for the 2020 project and made their big group performance, called Resonance, a medley of 3 singles from the album interspersed with another track remixed. I am pretty sure this was to make sure that more members got a stand out moment which I imagine is nearly impossible to do in one track with 23 current members. And with both BoB and Resonance, I definitely prefer the live stages to the MVs. These kinds of pieces are not really songs to just listen to, they are designed for performance at big year end shows like MAMA or the TV music showcases every December. They have very little time to prep them, they have to put a lot of their energy into blocking them for intricate stage effect and cameras, they will perform them a few times and then they split back up into their own touring and performance schedules. But NCT really do have impact because there is no other group trying to do what they are doing, expanding to multiple subunits and then coming together on massive projects from time to time. It's unique, a little challenging for the general public to understand, and I imagine it's a nightmare to try and schedule sometimes. I think it's amazing that they are doing it though, and they are still expanding, working their asses off to put out amazing music and performance. So I had a few questions for you: What do you have to do differently when you are choreographing for 5 or 7 people vs 18? What are the challenges in choreographing a piece for 18 or 23 performers when you know the fandom will be angry if you don't showcase all of them? I have often wondered to what extent the passionate fandoms of kpop culture (which pay hyperattention to how much screentime/lines/focus each member gets) influence how songs and choreographies are constructed...

I totally understand and agree with you. Just as a fun fact, this choreo has been through some changes, the first time they performed BOB was at the MAMAs in 2016 and Jisung was leading everyone in that V shape formation at the age of 14!!! So chewing gum Jisung leading everyone haha. With the 2018 version I had mixed feelings, I felt like there was a lot going on but at the same time, I felt like something was missing and I think is because the boys were still learning and young plus, let's be honest the synchronization was bad. And yes in 2019 we didn't have a group project, SM said 2019 never happened lol. Just so you know for the NCT 2020 era Jisung was (and still is) injured so he couldn't participate in any of his unit's choreos (Work It, Déjà Vu, and Resonance). And unfortunately, they don't have a dance practice video like the once we are used to, they only have like a little one with just them having fun and practicing so I recommend you watch one of the live performances maybe the one from MAMA or the KBS gayo also in the KBS K-Choreo you can see all the members, the formations, etc. Last fun fact, the performance for Resonance also changed a little bit, the one from MAMA has the "original" choreo but you will get a strike if you put it here and the one at KBS has the "different" choreo but I don't know if you'll get a strike or not so be careful. Sorry for the long af comment I just feel like with NCT there's a lot of explanation to do😅.

I am glad that someone mentioned that the original Black on Black choreo was done in 2016 at the MAMAs as part of a dance stage. NCT didn't have as many members then and when they expanded it to fit the larger cast it felt a little awkward and it didn't showcase all the new members so fans were angry about some of their favs being relegated to "back up dancers". But I don't there was the time or space to do that so they took a medley approach to the group dance in Resonance...

I also had this thought with NCT2018 and NCT 2020! To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of their huge cast performances. The boys are definitely talented dancers, but they aren't the best, per say, with synchronicity. The bulk of them, 127, prioritize individuality. And that works for the nine of them. But when you double that number it. doesn't look at impressive anymore. There are too many people to appreciate that individuality, and it comes off sloppy at times. Even more so, each unit has grown accustomed to the particular styles and way of presentation of their respective units, that I don't really see the cohesion I have come to expect of them as units when they are all together. I think it gets a bit worse with Resonance in 2020, because the choreography better serves smaller groups. When you get around to Resonance, I would recommend you watch their fancam of the KBS gayo and I think you will understand what I mean. While I love their dynamic choreography, I think something with more harsh lines, visible levels, and a more staccato rhythm would have suited them way better.
@DonKawaii1
@DonKawaii1 3 жыл бұрын
You're probably right about the cohesion. And it was most likely their first time together to collaborate as a full cast, but meshing different vibes coming from each subunit would definitely be a challenge.
@lilyrose0116
@lilyrose0116 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with many of the things you said. You can see the parts that they've performed before (i.e. 2016 performance with Jisung in the center) were well synchronized compared to the newer parts. But NCT in general does like to highlight individual styles which can disrupt the flow of the performance. Now, this is where we do not know if the choreographer meant it to be so. For example, Kick It emphasized individual style for each member. So there is a possibility that parts in NCT2018 & Resonance that might look less cohesive was where the choreographer ask for less synchronization and more individualized movements.
@H_armiger
@H_armiger 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's the problem of different styles or inability to synchronise (which is not true: rookies's dance practices, Dream's choreos, t7s). It's the time limit. Each new dance gets just a few days for practice, and then the boys are off to shoot an MV. During Resonance the members almost collided here and there due to lack of time to smooth out the smaller details.
