I kept waiting for mixing tips, but all I heard was stories about his life and which plugins he likes #WasteOfTime
@albinoaudio6 жыл бұрын
People who didn't see the "tips" or the gold on this video just don't understand what mixing is, at all! This was a masterclass! Forget the plugins, pay attention to whats behind his words!

Thanks for this. I appreciated the Chris Martin tip about using different types of compression to thicken a vocal. I've been binge-watching mixing tutorials and this one was really impressive as far as being prepared, professional and having substance.

Part of the problem is that many of the other "Producers" don't really know wtf they're doing...lol
@keithkelly56922 жыл бұрын
That's because he started out as a tracker (ScreamTracker 3, Fast Tracker 2, Impulse Tracker, OpenMPT, etc), which was very technical and more like programming music. (Back around 1995-1997, he went by "Cylus", and I went by "SYRiNX", and we were both members of the #trax scene in IRC. We even founded our own little record label called "Landslide" to produce demo CDs for tracker musicians.) Tracking is still a wonderful way to start learning the basics of digital audio, because it forces you to think about things like EQ, panning, mix, tonal balance, etc, timing, etc, while composing. Many effects (echo/delay, chorus, stereo imaging, etc) that today work like magic in modern plug-ins, must be painstakingly manually constructed by hand as an inherent part of writing music with an old-school tracker... which forces you to really understand how they work and to be very intentional about how you use them. For anyone who's just starting out or never experienced the basics, go grab yourself a copy of OpenMPT or SchismTracker and get familiar with their approach and limitations. Then open up the tracker module file for "Minimum Velocity" by Purple Motion and see what can be done with only two tracks in the hands of a true master. Limitation breeds creativity!

That tip on creating silence before a snare hit prior to a drop makes loads of sense. So much stuff to think about when doing electronic mixes
@FrasierLinde9 жыл бұрын
+Doni I think he meant after the snare hit before the drop, to allow the compressor to release before the kick hits.
@DoniMusic9 жыл бұрын
right but you would need to have some breathing room before the snare hit as well
@FrasierLinde9 жыл бұрын
Doni But it's not that important for the snare to hit at absolute full volume like it is for the kick.

Hey Morgan !! First off and foremost, great music !! I consider you one of the best in the business !! Ever since I first listened to The Longest Road, I was hooked. On that note. Could you please, please, please re-mix or extend your song I've Had Friends. The lyrics and music to that is off the hook !! I mean seriously, I don't just want it for me. I'm sure if you really remixed it or extended it, it would be a huge sensation. It really hits and makes so much sense. Either way. I've looked for extended versions, but there just not the same as the original. And I think a song like that which is already amazing should be extended another 2 or 3 minutes. Just a suggestion Morgan. I'm out in San Diego and go to Ruby Skye where you have played both. Your a great artist bro. Have a nice day !!

What I mean is that I'm sure Morgan Page knows what he is doing thats all. Phil Tan uses limiter with his master sometimes but its all subtle stuff. Also there are times when an engineer will intentionally make a channel clip by 2db-4db above unity gain so he/she can get some distortion for whatever reason because it fits. Dave did that in one of his videos ;)

Every live venue is going to have dynamic and spectral processing, very gOod reminder don't fo4get that! Another thing to remember is a lot if not most clubs will cut below 60 Hz so get those kicks sounding right between 60and 100 not just down at 38-56!

I seriously couldn't recommend both those forums enough to ANYone who's into making tunes. If you ever have a production question that Google can't instantly answer, those guys are the ones to call! SoundOnSound is probz another goldmine of knowledge but I haven't checked there in ages. All gonna be professional tips coming from there I think.

lol ever tried using built in plugins? What's the point of another EQ or delays if you're using Live?
@aldengroves519310 жыл бұрын
Sound quality & versatility. Live's EQ has a pretty poor spectral display, but with Oversampling it sounds fine. The compressor on the other hand will absolutely RUIN a vocal track most of the time; it's not designed for the sort of subtlety and versatility that vocals can require. Also Ableton's delay doesn't have a lot of customizability in terms of how it sits spectrally etc, which can be fixed with audio effect racks, but some delays have better and more integrated settings. The reverb is also just abysmally bad for most purposes. Point being all plugins are not created equal.

Haha sooooo true about listening to your song 500 times. I never can finish a song because I always create a really catchy melody, then have no clue how to build up to it or move on from that melody. Complete creativity block, and when I hear the mix the next day, there's always frequencies that sound too loud, even though I eqed the crap out of it
@RemmyMusic110 жыл бұрын
cuz ur grinding to hard on small things at first. you gotta take breaks when making tracks to clear your brain and your ears..loud snares and kicks are heavy on the ears and when you can take time to balance them out by going outside that could nbe your way of cleaning the mud from your mix.

Yes i understand that, but let's not compare Dave with this ''young fella'', Dave's experience is way ahead, i understand your point and i may even agree that it may be cool to turn it on and off but you would have to be pretty pretty pretty sure that non of the tracks from the Mix are not clipping in the master. I know you also know what i mean. I think it's nice to use but when you have you mix pretty much done and want to check out what the mastering studio gonna do to. Cheer's.
