Dance of the Butterflies: Slow Motion Gulf Fritillaries 720p HD Upscaled Casio EX-F1

Enjoy some very close-up slow motion footage of these amazing orange, black and silver butterflies, as they visit the flowers of Lantana bushes. This footage was filmed inside the Los Angeles Zoo, on ornamental plants along one of the pathways. The adult butterflies love to feed on the nectar-rich flowers of Lantana, while the caterpillars eat the leaves of Passion Vine.
These scenes were filmed with a hand-held Casio EX-F1 high speed camera, at 300fps. The footage was rendered at 15fps, resulting in a 20x slow-down from realtime speed, and upscaled to 720p HD to help preserve the resolution after multiple trips through video compression.
The music is a custom mix of "Bio" from the "Silicon Landscape" CD by Technician (yours truly). MP3 downloads and CDs available at the Technician website: HTTP://technician.jcmd...

So fantastic! I've often thought about how butterflies manage to navigate with any kind of precision, but they obviously do it well. Now I see how, I think. At least for straight-ahead flight, the leading edge of the wing actually flips back over the wing surface in a sort of skulling or finning motion in order to allow the wing to rise without pushing the insect down! See the 0:41s mark for a good example. As for hovering, I'll just leave it at - wow! Thanks!
