Beautiful! I've always wanted a wire strung to add to my collection. The bass string that resonates is the most haunting sound. I'm glad I found your web site for sheet music .

I play the wire strung cláirseach and this is absolutely lovely. It's such a stunning instrument, I'm utterly besotted with it ❤

Thank you so much for your appreciation Jenny, especially coming from a genuine clairseach player! So glad you didn’t feel I was massacring this fantastic instrument too much with my Celtic harp technique. I think the magic of wire strung harps is how beautifully they can fill the acoustic space without the need for complex patterns. I truly enjoy it regardless of my technical limitations! Glad you liked it too ❤️

Bisous, Phil

That is a very interestingly constructed harp. It looks the strings go up the middle between the outer two pieces of wood, like a paraguayan harp. But what are the things projecting upwards from the harp? Tuning pins/machines? Sharping levers? Can wirestrung harps have sharping levers, and if so, how do they work?

So I had to go down that rabbit hole on harp strings.. now I am curious, I am quite familiar with nylon, but I saw a lot of harpist still use gut strings? Is this true? ..
@mariannebouvettemusic Жыл бұрын
So many rabbit holes to fall into when it comes to the magical world of harps! 😝 Traditional gut strings are still popular as they tend to sound better, but they are more expensive and less durable than nylon. It all comes down to personal taste and budget as in many areas in life… the sound difference between nylon and gut will also be more or less noticeable across harp types and harp players! I think a similar conversation is happening in the guitar world. The jury’s out!

Might try putting a lavalier mic right in the soundbox. Although then it won't pick up the lovely ambient bird songs.

Hey Vehrkalia- I feel the same as you do (I am totally fascinated by how wire strings sound) but I’m definitely not a specialist in traditional clarsach technique! All I can say is (1) I did some research and it looks like the jury’s out on whether playing the clarsach with fingertips is historically acceptable at all (I also read this very liberating article indicating that both fingertips and fingernails playing techniques have coexisted: www.wirestrungharp.com/support/clarsach_faq/); (2) personally I find it perfectly comfortable to play with fingertips, I never had any problem using Celtic harp technique on a clarsach. So having a relatively clear conscience and a painless playing experience, I am happy to stick to fingerpad playing for now! :) the only kind of “adjustment” I would do when playing the clarsach is muffling strings throughout a piece, or limiting polyphony (ie playing less notes) to avoid creating a muddy “harmonic soup” given the reverb and resonance is so high on those harps (which is what makes them fascinating)!
@mikesoule13525 ай бұрын
Are you using your finger tips, or did you grow out your nails just for this video? Beautiful harp!!! 🥰🎶🎵🎶
@mariannebouvettemusic5 ай бұрын
Thanks! Just using finger tips. Apparently both playing techniques (finger tips / finger nails) co-existed throughout history.
@hollyharps11 ай бұрын
I believe most clarsach players use sparse arrangements to let the beauty of the notes shine through. Also, traditional Celtic harpers don't use glissandos! I love glissandos! Apparently, they make up for it with swift, intricate ornamentation. Basically, you're doing everything right.
@mariannebouvettemusic11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the nice reassurance, this is so kind of you! I did try to add a more intricate left hand to this tune and it sounded like an awful big soup for lack of a better word! So trial and error helped bring me into the right path! 😄
@LMc-l7h8 ай бұрын
So lovely! May I ask your technique? (It looks like you're using your pads, rather than nails).
@mariannebouvettemusic8 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks a lot! I’m using fingerpads, like I do on nylon string Celtic harp as it’s the most intuitive technique for me. Historically playing with wire strung harp with nails was more prevalent but both techniques have existed.
@LMc-l7h8 ай бұрын
@@mariannebouvettemusic I prefer it! It's bright, but softer to my ear. Thank you for the response.

This is a personal composition I ended up naming Dance of the Forest Spirit, after a long brainstorming session with my daughters. Dragons and squeaky creatures were part of the naming options 😄
