I'm not even really a particular fan of ballet, but this is one of the best pieces of orchesta music I know of. It is huge. Enormous. Ominous, brooding, dramatic, and any number of other similar adjectives. Hearing it gives you a feeling of towering, impending, inevitable catastrophe. Really powerful stuff.

Yes. Power is transmited by those wealthy families who ruled the cities in those days. Very rich merchants. Powerful, arrogants, protective, magnanimous. Prokoviev is inspired by these characters and adapts this marvellous music to describe them and to predict the oncoming tragedy. Yes really powerful stuff. Great Prokoviev.

Nureyev was a phenomenal choreographer, and he wasn’t at all afraid to take on the blockbuster ballets, such as the Nutcracker (Royal Ballet, still their favorite version), Sleeping Beauty (French Opera), Swan Lake (French Opera), La Bayadere (choreographed, performed weeks before his death), and, of course, Romeo and Juliet, for the French Opera. Nureyev also choreographed and filmed Don Quixote and produced the ballet in Australia. He cast the dancers, designed the costumes and the sets, and he also directed it, setting the cameras, and dancing the lead. Parts of it are on KZbin, but not the whole ballet, but it’s still available for purchase on Amazon.

its probably because the dancers couldnt deal with the fast pace.
@rickklaastad83718 жыл бұрын
The Paris Opera Ballet can "deal" with it, I'm sure. But classical tempos are noticeably quicker these days, reflecting a more frenetic, anxious, distracted, overloaded pace of life. I suspect the conductor chose to go slow because it sounds more menacing. Besides, mediaeval nobility (or today's nobility, for that matter) may not have been as nimble as their Dancing Masters, so the tempo here may actually reflect better the reality of the period.
@etcetera19958 жыл бұрын
You must hear things sped up, then. This is the only tempo I've ever heard this piece performed in.
@Stat1onary8 жыл бұрын
You're right its been a trend to speed up pieces, and I find it disgusting I can't stand when I hear a piece played too fast, rather too slow than too fast! Wouldn't want a piece of art be rushed and stressed through as if you're eager to get it over with. Either way this ballet was met with a lot of criticism back in its day, it was poorly received by the Russian establishment who wanted something simple, conventional, and one of the main criticisms was, "how could our dancers dance to this"? Which is why I don't think its uncommon to slow it down for the dancers either.

I can’t hear the music now without thinking of Sing 2. Other than that, it’s suitably sinister since the Capulets are violent and obsessed with showing off their wealth and authority. And the swords symbolize the hypocrisy that they want to have fun but their actions outside the household says something else.

Stalin was a good man, he protected classical art, he was a patron to Prokofiev and many other artists. I think Prokofiev was inspired by the good dictator to compose this excellent work... @paxmanchris8 жыл бұрын
There is actually an interesting tail about this choreography. It was asked that this song be the set for the Capulet ball. The choreographer thought the tempo was much too slow and found this to be the most difficult. But, it turned out to be the most popular piece among balet enthusiast. At first it may seem melodramatic; but it overall foreshadows and sets the tone for the rest of the balet.
@arcanamanana39518 жыл бұрын
I think that's some of why it's good though. It's sort of a critique on the Soviet art scene (controlled, entirely built around service to the state) by Prokofiev in that the music and choreography are so clearly at odds with one another and do not seem fit the whole "Renaissance party" vibe in the slightest.
@rickklaastad83718 жыл бұрын
Insightful! I think you've bolstered the argument I offered above to 'Lortagreb', who opined that "the dancers couldn't deal with the fast pace." Prokoviev "dealt" with much more than that in his career, as you know.
