@Rumozamonien They were kids back in 1994. 12-13 y.o. Vaganova's ballet school students. It is a custom in Mariinskiy to dance this part with vaganova's pupils.

This is a million times better danced slow than not in my opinion. I want to be one of those girls in pointe shoes someday... :)

@bismarckballerina but you're right, it IS slow! I've never heard it played anywhere near as slowly as that! The Royal Ballet Orchestra usually plays relatively slowly compared to Russian Conductors who often race through the Nutrcracker, but this is extraordinarily slow.

"Mirlitons" means reed pipes, in reference to the woodwinds playing in the upper register.

Your comment was the Mirliton dance was too slow. I agree completely. While I'm no ballet expert, my former band teacher I'm sure would use the term "dragging".

I guess this is something the Russians tried in this particular version. It definitely seems slow to me also, and I think it changes the Mirliton dance to the point of being detrimental.

@BacauseYourBeautiful As I said, I'm certainly no ballet expert, I've never been to one, and I know almost nothing about it. I know a bit about music I've played a few instruments. This slower version just seems slow to me, and I don't think it was written that way byTchaikovsky. Anyway, if u like that version great and I hope u do well. The version I like best is performed by the Duchy Ballet posted on KZbin. Cheers!!

they are kids. probably 12 or 13 years old. It's kirov's tradition to bring the vaganova's student dance in this performance.
