I've often said commercially it was a mistake to let Kelli go (musically a masterstroke) but perhaps it was a mistake to have ever involved her in the first place? I really mean no ill will but this band were so talented, I want to say ARE talented. They got pigeon holed because of the medias reaction to Becoming X. A great album but I just wonder how it would have been without Kelli on vocals. Chris Corner has so much talent and that shows in their next two albums. A real shame they disbanded so early.

Basically it’s a song about an affair, where the woman has another guy that she floods with all this warmth and a guy on the side that she washes the streets off his skin from. She wants more from the side guy and perceives his coldness as hurtful meanwhile side guy feels like he’s drowning when he’s with her and wants more but can’t get over the fact that he will forever have to steal nights with her and she won’t be offering him a relationship like she does with her main man. So before I can break down this version of the song you have to listen to the published version of waterbaby from Becoming X which is sung by Kelli. Waterbaby Kelli’s lyrics; Your heart is surf cold Your sights are set in perfect stone, And when you go you go alone, And when you stand you're on your own, I wash the streets from your skin when you come home I wash the streets from your skin when you come home We're nothing like friends, You have no time to lend, And if you're guilt then I'm the shame, And if I'm hurt then you're the blame You wash my trace from your skin and you leave again You wash my trace from your skin and you leave again Random laid plans, 40 days of one night stands, And when you go you go alone You walk the cross you made your own I wash the streets from your skin when you come home I wash the streets from your skin when you come home Streets from your skin Streets from your skin Streets from your skin Streets from your skin So you can see from Kelli’s version she’s dealing with a guy who’s emotionally unavailable. He comes to her frequently and she’s happy to take him in and wash the streets off his skin but for whatever reason he walks alone. She perceives him as cold and feels hurt as a result, hence that ‘and if I’m hurt then you’re to blame’ line. Now for Chris’ version these are the lyrics I can make out: Her water’s been cold A drowned man needs to feel in-flow Why am I so below? Why do I feel so below? You flood his space, while I steal my own You flood his space, while I steal my own So here the guy is saying that the woman in Kelli’s version is cold. He wants to be more in-flow with her but instead feels like he’s drowning within her. It also sounds like she’s cheating because he accuses her of flooding someone else’s space while he has to steal his own. This to me implies that while she’s happy to spend the majority of her time with her actual significant other, Chris is signing from the perspective of the guy she’s cheating with because he only gets the stolen moments snd not the whole thing.

the reason kelli helped them rise to greater popularity was 1) because of her look and 2) because of her voice- both of which were & are VERY unique to her. i’ve probably heard hundreds of male singers who sound/look like chris🤷🤷just being honest. i agree that she shouldn’t have ever been the face of the band, but you can’t deny that she brought a certain je ne sais quoi to the band that they themselves never possessed, and when she was booted out she took it with her too.
