Premiered in 1912 by the Ballets Russes, The Afternoon of a Faun was the first piece of choreography by the great dancer Vaslav Nijinsky.

"A great artist who has influenced me and the imagery in my work is Auguste Rodin. Rodin's sculpture of Nijinsky has always piqued my curiosity and thus, I felt it would be my base for the faun in this production." --Dominic Walsh
"Un gran artista que me a influido a mi y las imágenes en mi trabajo es Auguste Rodin. La escolptura de Nijinsky siempre a picado mi curiosidad y por eso, yo e sentido que sera mi base por el fauno en esta producción," --Dominic Walsh

This entire piece is a master class in muscle control...at times awkward, at times beautiful...always demonstrating strength. Hours of practice...wonderfully performed.

Debussy’s music, the stage lighting, and the various pas de deux of this piece all serve to create a painfully beautiful and poignant experience that leaves one wondering whether or not they’ve actually seen fawns or deer on stage, as their movements and behaviors were brilliantly performed here…

@@Vejur9000…humbly received, and with many thanks. This, and the video I’m attaching here to share with you, seem to me to be two of the most brilliant interpretations seen, except that the other was a solo performance… kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4HWhGefrtV4eassi=yDktPxxu44F4QkdH

Re-watching and re-considering this after viewing several works by Matthew Bourne . . . . Bourne's use of male dancers gave me a new appreciation for combinations of two or more men in dance, so I like this better on second viewing. Well done.

I love this! But what strikes me as odd is that all dancers are naked to emphasize their physique and body line, only the male dancers hide their junk away. As if they didn't have them. I mean, without being rude, why not stand by your masculinity?

This is dance not cabaret/porn. Junk flops around too much and would distract the audience.

The female dancer’s breasts and genitals are also very simply and discreetly covered. I agree with the previous response. To leave them uncovered would be a distraction.

@@josephhapp9 Distract? Male junk is part of the male body just like any other. If you present men basically naked, eveyone will automatically consider their junk anyway. Why not stand by it?

Nah! The storyline is deluded, and incoherent. These were all fauns. The connection for the main faun to the fantasy of his life was not truly established, but as a quicky, and not as a passionate fixation of a unique and powerful encounter. The dancers were excellent, but the choreography was lacking. Perhaps I’m bias, because the original staging was subtle, sensual, and superb in it’s entirety and connection to the music, and that over a century ago.
