Really interesting take on the polarity of his characters. not operating in any gray space. All pure or all evil. I hadn't noticed that. but that's a great insight

Re: Björk’s acting and Lars von Trier and Björk’s relationship. I remember reading that Björk, having not acted in any major film role prior to filming Dancer in the Dark, and being the consummate artist that she is, wanting to give the entirety of herself / her soul to her performance; stumbled upon method acting without any formal training, or for that matter, any idea what method acting was. Being the director that Lars von Trier is, with his vision getting the perfect scene out of his actress and since Björk was naively willing to keep pushing and pushing, he just let her run with it and never stopped her or told her to hold back. Apparently Björk, not having the proper training, remained in Selma’s character and emotional state so long between scheduled shoots that her own mental state began to break and Lars was too wrapped up in his directing and filming to notice. The reason why the audience is so affected by Björk’s performance is because they are not seeing an actor acting out emotions; they are seeing a person experiencing their emotions in their entirety. It’s raw, it’s ugly and it’s extremely heartbreaking; and Björk eventually snapped under the pressure. I also remember the realization afterward of what happened really affected Lars as he did not want to hurt Björk while filming Dancer in the Dark; but really was just caught up in the excitement and awe of the performance she was giving and was doing what he could to get the most out of it. If you consider the Dogville Confessions documentary, I think his approach to directing his actresses changed after Dancer in the Dark. After filming extremely tough scenes he asked Nicole Kidman, for instance, if she needed a hug; and he even took Nicole’s advise about certain scenes (such as not allowing Tom to have his way with her like the rest of the town). I think this demonstrates that Lars, as much of a sadist as he sometimes comes off as, still cares deeply about his actresses, and that he did not take what happened on the set of Dancer in the Dark lightly.

Great video guys! This was great because this went into things I didn't know about the film. To be honest it's going to be a while before I can muster another viewing.. That movie is really shocking in it's contrasts and hanging bjork was too much 😔

I think I meant they are naive to the dark material Von Trier is about to put them through. Not naive to the real world, but rather the nihilistic one in his films.

How much do you think Von Trier hates Bjork? Or vice versa?

As much as she hates him for sure. She-spat at his feet-he-smashed tv monitors near her-level of spite peak I read somewhere. Still they managed to deliver great art.

Yes, she is not innocent in all of this. Your comment fuels my theory that it’s ok sometimes for our artist to be little crazy.
