Some of us grew up with SNL. It started when I was in 8th grade. My neighbor Todd discovered it and told us all at school. I was 13. Gilda was like that sweet friend who used humor to defend herself from criticism from the mean girls. She was so lovable that everybody at school became fans. Mondays were spent talking about the show. We all loved Judy Miller and Jane Curtain’s voice yelling at Judy to quiet down. Baba Wawa was biting satire but Gilda could get away with it because of her kindness. All her characters were sweet and funny. My favorite was Rhonda Weiss, the Jewish American princess who to me, growing up in San Diego, thought Rhonda was nothing I’d ever seen. Like from another planet. I’m 62 now and I miss Gilda every time I see one of her skits. Those of us who grew up with the show lost part of our hearts when Gilda passed away. Rest in peace, angel on earth.

She was a ballerina to me on this. Beauty, humor and grace. Hard to find.

They must have rehearsed that a couple dozen times. That was great.
